About

My every Sunday night journey to Vauxhall, London, in the early 90’s would be taking me to The House of Roots and the now legendary Aba Shanti-I Sound System sessions. I quickly saw that this was a community, a weekly gathering, a congregation of like minded souls. This sanctuary was filled with bass driven thunder, bleeps, sirens, echoes and Aba’s words. A sophisticated futuristic sound collage, communicating stories of experience, Biblical passion followed by a dreamlike cascade of consciousness. To be in a session which lasted six hours would be a transcendental experience. The quality of Aba’s sound and the message in his words was a beautiful experience. The House of Roots wasn’t just a going out to a club for a nights entertainment, we all knew we would be in a landscape for upliftment and to hear a message.

The first time I walked into that barely lit dance hall with only Aba’s turntable lamp as a source of illumination, I noticed his crew standing around him. One face immediately grabbed my attention, I recognised him. At some point I moved closer, we looked at each other. It was Nick, my childhood friend from our town near Leicester. Our last conversation at a bus stop before I was leaving our town to travel was about Roots Reggae, I was a punk. It was John Peels weekly radio show that introduced me to the militant side of Reggae.  I left and lost contact with Nick. That was 1977. Fast forward to 1991 and now I’m standing next to him, he’s a Rastaman, travelling every Sunday from Leicester with BA (RIP) and Babs to help set up the sound system, then break it down at 4am to drive back home. This was the weekly routine.

It seemed I was meant to find The House of Roots and become part of this community, to document it.

The series of images in ' Bassland ' provides a discourse to one of the many instances of the contribution to British cultural heritage and identity brought to this land by a transatlantic migration, specifically the ‘ Windrush ‘ generation from Jamaica and Rastafarianism with a gift in the form of Sound System Culture

Since the early days of its beginnings this voice provided a valuable socio/political reference point in the history of West Indian communities in the UK. Through its teachings and declarations of pan-African politics, Rastafarianism now ultimately provides a voice and a response to socioeconomic changes for everyday peoples from all nations.

Sound System Culture in the UK is not separatist. In these days of rising nationalistic and separatist political views, a harmony of cultural exchange is as relevant today as ever and continues to play a significant role in creating a unique dynamic social landscape in the UK.

Each one teach one.

About your book.

The following images are a very small example of the layout style that I'm super happy with. All these pages are double page spreads with the book gutter running in the middle. This book will be a high end photo art book printed using the exceptional quality of offset lithography printing. I’ve chosen the highly regarded Push Print of London who have worked with galleries, art organisations, design companies and photographers for over 30 years. Their Heidelberg sheet fed offset machine is a massive beast to behold. I really want this book to be something special to hold and for the printing to be first class. The cover will be fine threaded linen with an image on the front and back. The book size unopened is 230mm x 280mm with approx 150 pages. All the images on this Kickstarter page are only a small peek of the whole project.

Aba Shanti-I and his sound system have been playing throughout the UK and Internationally for over 30 years. His sound is a highly regarded Roots Reggae Sound System and has been voted No.1 DJ in the world by DJ magazine. He is now one of the ambassadors of Sound System Culture regularly playing at festivals and Roots gatherings all around the globe, spreading his Rastafararian message of peace, love and unity to all nations.

About me.

My history as a photographer includes shooting for many of the cultural defining magazines of the past 30 years, both in the UK and internationally. These magazine include, I-D, The Face, Dazed and Confused, Spin New York, Arena and many more. Commissions range from fashion stories, portraiture of artists, musicians, writers and actors. This book is a first for me,  now with your help we can make this bird fly, thank you and Bless.

Risks and challenges

My goal of £16000 will pay for 500 copies of ' Bassland '. Of course if the goal is exceeded then more copies can be printed and the story will reach out to more people.
I’ve carefully priced out production costs for all printing, ancillary rewards and expenses for domestic shipping ( international shipping will be an added cost to the buyer). I’ve worked on budgets for high end magazine and advertising campaigns for decades. I know exactly how much is needed to fulfil this project, you are the last piece of the puzzle to finish it and let this bird fly.
My target goal will pay for, high-res scanning of the negatives, spotting and file post production, printing of the book and fulfilment of all pledge rewards including packaging and delivery.
I’m fully confident of the successful conclusion of this project with all production finishing by the end of September, copies of the book and all pledges will start to be delivered during October 2019.
