See the Show You Love!
We've been enjoying the tapes of this show for years. Now, to celebrate the 40th anniversary, I am producing a high-quality, hard-cover coffee table book to share the never-before-seen photos I took that day. You will now be able to see the entire show, plus the pre-show set up, documented in dazzling black and white images.
From David Lemieux, Grateful Dead Archivist:
"We've all heard the Cornell 5/8/77 show countless times over the years, but the one missing element has always been the visuals. What did the band, venue, crowd look like at what's widely considered one of the best, and most widely-heard, Grateful Dead shows of all time? Larry's photos answer that question, revealing a small-ish venue, an enthusiastic audience, and the band looking like they're having the time of their lives, in the midst of one of their greatest tours ever. These are some of the best photos we've ever seen from 1977, and that they're from Cornell makes them even more special than simply their photographic and artistic excellence. Larry came to us during production of the Get Shown the Light box set, and generously allowed us to include a few terrific photos in the box set's booklet. His new book project, however, includes dozens of previously unseen images from Barton Hall on 5/8/77, bringing the concert to life with a magnificent visual element that was unknown until now."
I'm asking for your help to pay for the costs of printing this book. Together, we can make this book a reality!
For the first time, Barton Hall comes to light!
The book will tell the story of the day. First, the setup: building the stage; setting up the lighting; erecting the sound system; and sound check.
Next you will see photos of the entire show, starting with the band getting locked in during New Minglewood Blues and ending as they take it to the next level with electrifying photos of Morning Dew and the encore.
Working with the original negatives, I've selected the best images of the day. I'm working with a professional graphic designer on the book's layout. The photos will be arranged by set and in chronological order, so you can match the photos with the songs.
The photos will be artistically arranged so that not only the images, but the entire book will delight your eye. The book will be printed to the highest quality standards, and bound in hardcover. This volume will be a wonderful record of a historic and magical show and a beautiful document of a Grateful Dead performance at a special period in the life of the band.
You probably know that a spectacular, remastered recording of this special show was just released, and Cornell just published a book telling the story of the show. I am proud to have a few photos in both of those works, but I saved most of the photos, and some of the best ones, for this project. The book will be a stunning visual record of the show, joining the sound and words in celebration of the 40th anniversary.
About This Campaign
I decided to have this book printed by a reputable art book printing house in the United States, and not more cheaply overseas. This will ensure that the final product is the highest quality, something I can be proud of, and something you will treasure. That raises my costs quite a bit, but I think the extra investment is worthwhile.
I've already paid for the high-resolution scanning of the negatives and the costs of the graphic designer. Funds raised in this campaign will be dedicated to costs for printing and shipping the book.
I'm offering the book as a basic reward at a discount from the post-Kickstarter price, and I'm also offering archival quality photographic prints as special rewards. In addition, supporters at any level may vote for the cover of the book from these two choices:
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. You can see more photos on my website. Thanks for looking and please support my project.

Risks and challenges
The risks of this project reaching fruition if funded are minimal. The photos have already been taken (obviously), scanned, sorted through and edited. The design and layout of the book is practically complete and paid for. Although this will be my first book, I researched the business and costs thoroughly and am working with an experienced graphic designer. I have a firm bid for the printing and know my shipping costs. I am confident that if my project is funded, I will be able to successfully complete it.
It is possible there will be a brief delay in production, if required by the printer or if necessary to ensure that the book is the best it can be.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
