A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
It is great to be back on Kickstarter with a brand new beer badge. The overwhelming support we received the first time around was instrumental in getting things off the ground. Over 400 backers supported the first project and a few thousand customers have purchased the badges since. I have designed dozens of consumer products throughout my career but I have never received as much fan mail from happy customers. People love the idea behind the badge, the way it feels in their hands, its versatility, and the craftsmanship with which it is made. The love this simple product receives definitely exceeds my wildest expectations.
The new project is a little different from its predecessor. Where the first badge celebrated the law, the new rendition celebrates the outlaws that fall beyond its boundaries. I considered several different names and themes but none seemed as fitting as the one you see here before you. The Man of Mayhem badge is one epic piece of hardware. This beautifully crafted hand tool boasts a number of very handy features other bottle openers fail to deliver.
Each Man of Mayhem badge is equipped with a metal clip, a neodymium magnet, and a loop. This handy little combo makes the badge incredibly useful and versatile. It can be adapted to serve you in just about any festive situation.
A strong rare earth neodymium magnet secured to the clip makes it easy to stick the badge to the fridge or beer bucket so it is conveniently within reach next time beer o’clock rolls around. The magnet is secured to the clip but can be taken off with a little bit of effort if you so choose.
The metal clip makes it easy and convenient to clip the Man of Mayhem badge to pants or belts which is great if you’re tail-gaiting or enjoying a beer or two in the field. In addition, the clip can be used as a money clip to keep your cash together.
The loop is intended to tether the badge to bar counters, fridges, beer coolers, or to whatever you’d like to make sure it stays put. This feature is especially handy at parties. You can also use the loop to hang this bad boy off a chain if that’s how you choose to roll.
The toughest part is done. The design, testing, and tooling phases are completed. The new badge is now ready for full scale production but it needs your help to flip the final switch so we can reach a minimum volume needed to make production economically viable.
Once the project is funded, the contributions will be used to fund the production. The die casting of the badges will take place in Asia. The vast majority of human labor (packaging, order fulfillment, shipping, and customer service) will take place in Canada and the United States.
Images below depict finished production samples. Each badge is die cast from a zinc alloy and comes in one of three distinct finishes (Steel, Brass, and Gold) as shown below. The vintage steel and brass finishes are standard and will be available in the future. Gold badges are plated with REAL GOLD so they'll always keep their shine. Gold is a limited edition finish and will only be made available to our Kickstarter backers during this campaign.
Risks and challenges
Risks and challenges are minimal; the difficult, most delay-prone part of the project is done. The tooling is ready to go. We have a reliable manufacturer that we have been working with for the past three years so we know what to expect. Once the funding goal is met, a new production run will be initiated and your very own Man of Mayhem badges will ship shortly thereafter. The delivery deadline is tight so the sooner we reach the funding goal the sooner we can get our purchase order in. We can’t wait to get these into your hands because we're confident you'll love them.
