BaRPiG's rules are simple and straight forward, so much so that they fit on a single double sided card, included in every pack;
The Character Powers typically rely on some creative input by players, and the results will start to depend on the player's strategies, making every time a power is used different from the last.
Some of the Character Powers even use your surroundings where the game is being played in, meaning BaRPiG can be played anywhere and everywhere, with any group of friends. Every game will be different from the last, making BaRPiG highly replayable.
To make this job easier, we’ve always focused on keeping the design of the game and pack small and portable. BaRPiG will fit in any jacket pocket, backpack, purse, or bag of not-so-unlimited holding.

What started as a bunch of silly puns written down one night led to the release of the beta edition of our great game, BaRPG. It's success is reflected in some of the reviews above. BaRPiG is the evolution from that beta version, and contains all the best bits of the original BaRPG, plus more. See the full story in our Background section below.

Our €6000 funding goal has been carefully calculated taking into consideration worst case scenarios for taxation and shipping requirements. We're also funding a large sum of our own savings into this project to make it happen; That's how much we believe in BaRPiG!

Our development of this game has already been a long process, and by the time of launch we wanted to have a fully developed and tested version of our game ready. This is where we stand, we have the files ready to send to our printer, along with all our illustrations. All our reward levels have been calculated and prearranged with manufacturers, as have the shipping and handling costs.
Our army of friends are ready to dispatch the boxes of games when they arrive into individual packages with all the bonus goodies when we reach those stretch goals to be sent out to you, our backers. We have a quote standing by from a very reputable European manufacturer, who is awaiting our confirmation of funding. We’re pretty much ready to rumble.
BaRPiG is the brain child of Jonathan Franklin and Phillip Melchers, who in an unrelated incident are also in a relationship. Our story began on a night out in Tilburg, the Netherlands. Whilst waiting for our drinks, we began thinking about how awesome it would be to make an RPG for bars, or, a “BaRPG!” we announced simultaneously. We rapidly came up with a long list of silly character puns that we wrote down on a bar napkin, such as the Barbeerian, Glassassin, Drmunk, Pintcess and Brewid.
The next morning on our way back home we talked about BaRPG in the car. Phil’s birthday was due in two weeks, and we had plans to celebrate in Dublin, perfect testing ground for BaRPG v1.0. The game that happened there showed potential and we decided to continue development as a hobby.
With each version and improvement BaRPG quickly gained item cards, a damage system, and our level sliding card system. At the same time our friends saw the potential and kept suggesting we try our game commercially. It wasn’t until one evening that a passer-by inquired about the game while we were playing with friends. We invited him to join, and after 40 minutes he excitedly asked ‘Where can I get a copy of this?’
This was the cue we needed as we finally developed a Beta edition of BaRPG which we brought to market in May of 2016 in a limited quantity of 200 units. You can find out more and even print'n'play the original BaRPG at the old site, www.barpig.eu/barpg/
After countless hours of play testing, the feedback we received from players has provided us with the key elements necessary to evolve BaRPG into an even greater game. For starters, buying items with ‘sips’ from your drink was still too suggestive for many people, so we replaced it with an alternative: The Bar Tab card. Instantly the game had an extra dimension of game-play added to it. We also adjusted some of the character powers, and slightly rebalanced and modified the items.
We introduced the changes at a gaming exhibition in Eindhoven in November as "BaRPiG", an homage to the way some of our friends first mispronounced BaRPG.
We were successful in selling our last 20 copies within that weekend, and knew our next step was to bring this First Edition of BaRPiG to the world through Kickstarter. Since then we’ve been busy working with our illustrator, manufacturers, shipping agencies, retailers and venues, and our array of friends with various disciplines and backgrounds including many fellow indie game developers we’ve met along the way. They’ve all helped create what has now become our proud little creation. Our hobby, all grown up: an image of pig-fection.
We’ve done all this alongside our fulltime jobs as customer service agent / freelance writer and airline pilot (aka glorified bus driver). We could never make it this far without the support of our friends (both new and old), families, and growing number of playtesters who often in turn become friends as well. To them, to have reached this far, we are eternally grateful.
Our initial offering of the Beta version of BaRPG has done exceedingly well with retailers in our home town of Amsterdam, and they are again eager to support our campaign. Average turnover we’ve noticed among retailers here has been 2-3 units per month. BaRPiG is a much improved game, with much more noticeable and attractive packaging, and the additional benefit of having Kickstarter acclamation.
For these reasons we’re also offering retailers worldwide a special 10 pack stack at €7 per pack in our Kickstarter campaign. Proof of business will be requested once this pledge has been received.
One of the most eye catching things about BaRPiG is it’s wonderful illustrations. We have our dear friend and artist-par-none Marie-Jeanne to thank for that. We've done our research on Shipping, and have contracted with both the Dutch Postal Services as well as Ascendia Post to dispatch your games using worldwide postal services.
We've managed to arrange competitive rates with them for all of our reward types. Here's a table of the shipping rates for each pledge type. These rates are also already integrated in the Kickstarter pledge manager for this campaign.
BaRPiG was made for shipping! The size of It's packaging means it fits very neatly in any standard sized letterbox. So if you're not home to accept the delivery, it'll be waiting on your doormat when you get back!
Customs and Import Taxes
We've also done our research on customs excise, duties, and GST requirements. The low price of BaRPiG means it's exempt of these charges in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States. For delivery to the EU and UK, we're shipping from within the EU, so that bypasses those requirements automatically.

With regards to the additional rewards, only Canada imposed Harmonized Sales Taxes (HST) on imported goods for personal use valued CA$20 and higher. BaRPiG and it's rewards are not subject to any further duties in Canada.

We've managed to arrange shipments in such a way that this tax will only apply to the BaRPiG & Character Sketch Signed by MJ and above.
We've included examples per pledge type that's susceptible below using the highest HST of 15% per shipment as applicable in in Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia & Newfoundland, and PEI. Canada Post also incurs a CA$9.95 handling fee per item of mail audited. We've used an exchange rate of €1 = CA$1.39.

Alternative Shipping Options / Pick Ups
Naturally, should you wish to have your game sent by registered mail, courier, or rather pick it up at a convention we will be visiting, or even drop by in Amsterdam and have a game with the creators themselves, you can send us an email after your pledge, and we’ll arrange that for you alongside your pledge.
Retailers in the EU and the UK won't have to worry about this issue, trade within the union is duty free, and taxes are submitted in your business's country of registation. For other nations please check local tax and duty regulations on imports for commercial purposes. Once again, BaRPiG's Harmonised TARIC code is 9504 40 00 00. Risks and challenges
Though BaRPiG will mark our first Kickstarter release, we've had plenty of experience learning the tricks of our trade with BaRPG. Fortunately, game creation is on the whole relatively risk free. We've also applied Threat and Error management strategies used in aviation to identify, understand, and alleviate or manage risks and challenges in every step of this process (benefit of one of the two being an airline pilot).
There is no risk involved with game development in our case. The game is already created, tested, illustrated, and ready to go. Back ups of all our files are across multiple platforms, including a printout on paper should that even be necessary. This includes illustrations made by our artist MJ.
To alleviate the threat of higher than expected production costs, we've established strong relationships with our shortlist of manufacturers here in Europe, and have locked in their quoted production costs until after the end date of the Kickstarter campaign. This also includes shipping costs from the factory to fulfillment.
Our game is relatively easy to produce. It's just cards, a dice, and a box. We don't anticipate delays in production once it's underway, and at most delays will be in the realm of a month or two. We're also guarding ourselves against bankruptcy of producer by reserving full payment until deliver.
Fulfillment itself will be carried out by ourselves (with our army of friends fed by Phil's amazing cooking) up until 2,000 pledges. Beyond that, we will enlist the help of a fulfillment company, and will have enough buffer in our revenues to adjust for that increased cost.
To ensure against possible losses between production until sending from fulfillment we've taken up an insurance policy that will guard against that eventuality. You'll still get your pledge in that case, it will just take a little longer.
We're using international postal services to send out the pledges, and have a transport cost quote fixed with our partner in this Ascendia Postal Services. Naturally if you feel you'd rather use registered mail or a courier service, there is room to customize that with us, and we'll be sure to organise you a competitive rate.
Following the success of our funding we hope to have our product ready for Summer 2017. Of course, wait times will depend on how much we are funded and what needs to be printed.
We've also got personal cash reserves which we will use should any additional financing be required to get you your pledges. We believe in doing this fairly, and we'll make sure we finish this project in that manner.
We'll be keeping you up to date with the entire process on a weekly basis. We're used to blogging weekly, we've been doing it with BaRPG and BaRPiG since day one. It's also a little side fun for us, we get to reflect upon what we've acheived thus far.
