Fight or Flight is an ongoing series of books based on the lives and history of individuals within Aerikar, there are currently three books: Avian Adventurers, Myths and Magic, and Idols of Aether. Writing these books required a lot of thought about their world and lore, which formed the perfect setting for a D&D adventure; an adventure which I have personally been running for the last few months.
Fight or Flight: Kingdom of Aerikar is a campaign setting designed for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, and focuses on the avian, a race of bird-like humanoids and their busy and historical kingdom.
The campaign setting introduces multiple expansive regions full of towns and cities, along with quest prompts and variant descriptions. The setting also introduces new races, classes, backgrounds, magic items, and spells.
All of this is alongside all-new artwork in a hardcover book with over 100 pages of content!
From the swamps of Cor'vilan to the expansive fields of Burromoore, Aerikar is a giant kingdom deep in history, war, magic and lore. Aerikar is a hugely diverse kingdom with much to explore, split into several distinct regions:
- The forested capital region of Aerotis, home to the monarch, deep woodland and towering mountains.
- The militaristic and unforgiven land of Seto, the setting for numerous wars, and full of bland and depressing scenery.
- The cold icebergs of the north, where the svendanes live, ravaging nearby ships and perfecting the art of survival.
- The boggy swamps of Cor'vilan, home to the greatest magical minds, and yet absent of life. Not many venture here, unless they wish to find themselves pulled into the dark tunnels of the Underneath.
- Burromoore is the birthplace of the money-loving merchants, who provide most of the weaponry, food, luxuries and resources to the rest of the kingdom. A beautiful kingdom, if you're willing to pay the costs needed to see it.
- Flendiro is home of the most beautiful views in all of Aerikar, with tropical beaches, sandy dunes and humid hills. Military action is forbidden here, and the sneaky pickpockets take advantage of that.
- Ruled by a harsh dictator for hundreds of years, the warriors of Fargard are resilient, tactical, and unmatched. You'll need a permit to get here, unless you're unfortunate to be imprisoned on Purgo.
- The Broken Isles are the birthplace of magic and religion, and the origin of a destructive explosion that single handedly ended a war.
The avian are a diverse race of bird-like humanoids. Unlike their similar counterparts, the avian have winged hands, resulting in a decision to be made: fight or flight?
The avian are split into several "breeds", or subraces, each with their own abilities and proficiencies, and are detailed in the current race guide available here. This campaign setting adds the currently known races, as well as a few "forgotten breeds"...
The Aerikar campaign setting introduces three new playable classes:
Throughout the warring history of Aerikar, one type of hero has profited from conflict and peace alike. Charismatic and cunning, merchants are always learning new ways to make some money.
A formidable warrior trained from birth, the nameless are elite spies, assassins, masters of powerful close combat, but never afraid to use what little magic they possess to turn the tides in their favour.
Envious of those around them, the unworthy desire magic. Without the ancient energy of the Aether to help perform their practices, they steal the power from those they defeat to fuel their dark abilities.
The setting also adds two new player backgrounds suitable to the kingdom:
A willing volunteer or an abducted victim, the experiment has been mutilated in the name of science, in hopes of finding the key to the perfect avian.
Always studying, always learning, the researcher strives for knowledge wherever they can find it, even if it means leading to the decimation of thousands.
Aerikar is a deeply historical land, and this campaign setting explores that! The kingdom allows for campaigns set in a number of eras, described at the start of the book. You can follow these eras, use them as inspiration, or ignore them completely!
Starting in the opening chapter, the setting details key events and monarchs of Aerikar alongside it's history, but also provides alternative descriptions for locations within the kingdom based on whichever era you wish to run a campaign in!
An energetic kingdom with always something going on, the Aerikar campaign setting provides a variety of suggestions for adventures to be run in every location listed within the book; from suspicious strangers to mysterious monsters, there is lots to discover!
Each area within Aerikar is accompanied by short bullet-point prompts for potential encounters the group may bump into when travelling from place-to-place. These prompts are also entirely optional, but can also help with developing the world for the players!
The £3000 goal is designed to provide the funds to print 100 copies of the campaign setting. This means that the relevant rewards are priced at near enough the printing costs and shipping (+ Kickstarter fees)! If the KS is successful, then I will be selling the books at a profitable price once the campaign is over, so backing now is the best option!
The goal amount also takes into account the cost of Kickstarter's 5% fees and 3% processing fees, and works out near perfectly at £3000. Any additional costs (such as printing the maps, commission materials etc) will be paid by myself. The goal of this project is to get the book and world out there!
All backers of the campaign will be acknowledged and thanked within the final product, but also pledging enough for different tiers grants you access to a combination of the following:
Aerikar Campaign Book: The final product of the KickStarter: a complete campaign setting for Aerikar, available as a digital .pdf or a physical hardback copy.
Annotated Map Print: An annotated print of the Aerikar map, including more detail than the standard map, and markers for key locations from the Fight or Flight series of books.
Fight or Flight Collection: A set of the first 3 Fight or Flight books.
Party Commission: A personalised watercolour painting for up to 5 avian characters, such as NPCs, or your D&D party.
Personal Monarch Section: Have an Aerikaian monarch designed by yourself, with a section detailing the key events of their reign.
In the event we surpass the goal, there are a few additional elements I would like to add into the setting, which will be disclosed if the goal is reached, so as to ensure the focus is on the project reaching its main goal, and that it is completed by the estimated date.
Risks and challenges
The main risk of this project is time. This is an extremely ambitious project that I'm working on entirely independently, balanced on top of a full-time job and other commitments. Despite this, I've already put a lot of time and effort into the book, and with the backers' support, I'll be able to devote my full spare time to this project, and hopefully complete the project in time!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
