Hello fellow rebels, upstarts, artists, writers, readers, film freaks, and disillusioned patriots ...
If you too are nervous about looming policies that seek to marginalize and silence us for daring to think, create and live on our own terms, then please read on.
Two years ago, we launched a successful Kickstarter (CLICK HERE TO SEE THE ORIGINAL CAMPAIGN) for our film, BARNEY'S WALL, a feature documentary about the lasting cultural impact of BARNEY ROSSET, the legendary radical publisher, free-speech warrior and political activist whose fierce mid-century battles against literary censorship, government surveillance, racial bigotry and the Vietnam war blasted open America's culture and birthed the 60's counter-culture rebellion, paving the way to today's unfettered artistic expression.
188 of you loyal backers stepped up to enable us to complete filming and post-production of our 78 minute feature documentary. Your names have rolled in our film credits at every private screening.
Now we're back to ask for more funding help from previous and new supporters to cover permissions/licensing fees, attorney fees, and insurance costs in order to release the film commercially.
We have created truly unique thank you rewards to show our gratitude. Just scroll way down to REWARDS to see them.
But we hope that first you ....
We've spent the last year testing our film at private screenings, with panel discussions, in New York, San Francisco and, this spring, in Paris (with subtitles). We're ready now with your help to release it to the public.
WHY OUR FILM MATTERS
Not since the 1950's have our First Amendment rights and individual liberties been so threatened. That's why it's important to get our timely documentary BARNEY'S WALL released.
We believe the story of Barney Rosset's fierce life-time crusades for an open culture and freedom of self-expression are an inspiration for all of us who seek to push back – a reminder that it takes just one committed, defiant visionary to rally an army of resistance against repressive and intrusive government powers.
In the Sixties, Barney's battle-cry, Join the Underground, rang out on every college campus, creating a mass counter-culture movement.
We are a collective of experienced indie filmmakers who produce films and videos about artists and thinkers whose provocative work alters the cultural, political or intellectual status quo. We live in New York City but film around the world.
Our brilliant co-creators:
WHAT YOUR PLEDGE WILL COVER
Our completed film weaves together commentary and 415 archival photos, images, videos, and movie clips.
Our awesome soundtrack features music by Grammy- nominated acoustic guitarist Gary Lucas (remember Captain Beefheart?), legendary award-winning vocalist Phoebe Legere, a number of genre-bending Brooklyn bands, avant-garde international musicians, and a few iconic 'golden oldies'.
Your pledge will help us to hire a professional music supervisor to track and negotiate master, publishing, performance and sync rights for all our tracks.
In addition your pledge will help cover licensing fees, attorney fees, and an Errors and Omissions insurance policy required by our licensing agreements and by all film distributors–– all of which exceed our budget. This is the little known back end of film-making and why so many worthy films never see the light of day. Please don't let this happen to us.

A Swedish director of "Waiting for Godot" in San Quentin with an all-inmate cast, a legendary jazz composer, an East Village artist/inventor, a Bangkok expat writer of sexy detective novels, a co-founder of Occupy Wall Street, a Freedom of Information Act lawyer, a major museum exhibition director, a Romanian poet, several high profile publishers and editors, a biographer of Expressionist painter Joan Mitchell (Barney's first wife), an Iraq war vet and novelist, an Israeli war vet and novelist, a Zapatista translator, a neurologist, and a shaman.
Our film employs an original way to trace the sources of Barney Rosset's rebelliousness, obsessions and legacy. When he died, Barney left behind a wall of memories, obsessively sculpted and painted on a 15' x 20' wall of his East Village loft during the last three years of his life. Each intricate vignette is a memory, which served as portals for us to enter into the experiences and obsessions that shaped him as a rebel.
All his life Barney fought for the rights of others to tell their stories. Help us now to tell his.
In gratitude for your support we have created truly unusual rewards. (Yes, you will be able later to select t-shirt size and style):
1. Subversive "rejoin the underground" Sticker
Go rogue, be inventive: slap our "Rejoin the Underground" sticker on your car bumper, your kid's bike, the pram in the hallway, your overbearing boss's new iPhone XS Max, your obnoxious neighbor's mailbox, your significant other's laptop... or better yet, your own.
2. WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS PARANOID Bookmark
Feeling paranoid? Well, you should be, and with the return of our popular backers exclusive laminated bookmark you can mark that timely reminder in your novel, your desk diary or your pile of bills (right on top of your cable provider's invoice). One side’s innocuous as a photo-booth strip; the other will keep you alert with literary reminders from William S. Burroughs and George Orwell’s "1984." Yeah, “Big Brother’s Watching You” and you’re paranoid, but everything’s still cool because “A paranoid is someone who knows a little of what’s going on.”

AND DO YOU KNOW OF EDUCATIONAL OR CULTURAL VENUES THAT WOULD BE INTERESTED IN SPONSORing A PRIVATE SCREENING AND TAILORED PANEL?
A filmmaker without funding is a musician without an instrument, an artist without a canvas, a writer with a forever blank page.
We all know how dependent artists are upon the generosity of patrons. We are very grateful for your continuing support because we truly could not have come as far as we have without all of you. Thank you from the bottom of our rebel hearts.
All our thanks from Team Barney for helping pass on Barney's fierce fight for tolerance, diversity, an open culture and freedom of thought and the imagination,

Risks and challenges
It's common for documentaries to take longer to make than you hope, and certainly this film has. Because of our test screenings and panels, we made a hard decision half-way through to retool and incorporate more images and videos and music to bring more energy. That cost us time and money. We’ve spent almost three years researching, filming, editing, and private test screening this documentary. Our film is completed, but to release it we must cover the costs of intellectual property licensing rights for voluminous archival footage, video and film clips and photographs, as well as the cost for a music supervisor to finalize master, publishing, performance, and sync rights. Without these permissions our film can not be insured or released.
We have done full due diligence in tracking copyrights using an intellectual property rights attorney. For extra legal protection we have been executing licensing agreements for all materials. The Rosset Estate and Barney's friends and family are backing us. We're all a team.
We count on you to help us take this final step in acquiring a distribution deal to get BARNEY'S WALL released in theaters, streaming outlets such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and PBS. We're aiming high.
You are all very much a part of our film. We consider this a community project and utterly timely in this era of increasing overreaching government authority.
Based on our three-year investment in the project, our loyal backers to date, our professional track records, the success of our press outreach and extensive media coverage, and our many private test screenings, we're confident that with completed licensing agreements and full insurance coverage we can get our film immediately into the hands of an experienced sales and distribution agent.
