Hello fellow rebels, upstarts, artists, writers, readers, film freaks, and disillusioned patriots ...

If you too are nervous about looming policies that seek to marginalize and silence us for daring to think, create and live on our own terms, then please read on.

Two years ago, we launched a successful Kickstarter (CLICK HERE TO SEE THE ORIGINAL CAMPAIGN) for our film, BARNEY'S WALL, a feature documentary about the lasting cultural impact of BARNEY ROSSET, the legendary radical publisher, free-speech warrior and political activist whose fierce mid-century battles against literary censorship, government surveillance, racial bigotry and the Vietnam war blasted open America's culture and birthed the 60's counter-culture rebellion, paving the way to today's unfettered artistic expression.

Uber-rebel Barney Rosset's notorious Grove Press and Evergreen Review sought out writers and artists so radical they transformed America's culture and politics
Uber-rebel Barney Rosset's notorious Grove Press and Evergreen Review sought out writers and artists so radical they transformed America's culture and politics

188 of you loyal backers stepped up to enable us to complete filming and post-production of our 78 minute feature documentary. Your names have rolled in our film credits at every private screening.

Now we're back to ask for more funding help from previous and new supporters to cover permissions/licensing fees, attorney fees, and insurance costs in order to release the film commercially.

We have created truly unique thank you rewards to show our gratitude. Just scroll way down to REWARDS to see them.

But we hope that first you ....

We've spent the last year testing our film at private screenings, with panel discussions, in New York, San Francisco and, this spring, in Paris (with subtitles). We're ready now with your help to release it to the public.

WHY OUR FILM MATTERS

Not since the 1950's have our First Amendment rights and individual liberties been so threatened. That's why it's important to get our timely documentary BARNEY'S WALL released.

We believe the story of Barney Rosset's fierce life-time crusades for an open culture and freedom of self-expression are an inspiration for all of us who seek to push back – a reminder that it takes just one committed, defiant visionary to rally an army of resistance against repressive and intrusive government powers.

San Francisco's legendary City Lights Bookstore sponsored one of our many test-screenings. 99 year old Beat poet and HOWL defender Lawrence Ferlinghetti gave a tribute.

In the Sixties, Barney's battle-cry, Join the Underground, rang out on every college campus, creating a mass counter-culture movement.

Barney's uber-hip Evergreen Review was the analogue equivalent of today's Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and Buzzfeed in the '50s and '60s: the place you went to know what was happening, and what mattered.

 WHAT YOUR PLEDGE WILL COVER

Our completed film weaves together commentary and 415 archival photos, images, videos, and movie clips.

Our awesome soundtrack features music by Grammy- nominated acoustic guitarist Gary Lucas (remember Captain Beefheart?), legendary award-winning vocalist Phoebe Legere, a number of genre-bending Brooklyn bandsavant-garde international musicians, and a few iconic 'golden oldies'.

Your pledge will help us to hire a professional music supervisor to track and negotiate master, publishing, performance and sync rights for all our tracks.

In addition your pledge will help cover licensing fees, attorney fees, and an Errors and Omissions insurance policy required by our licensing agreements and by all film distributors–– all of which exceed our budget.  This is the little known back end of film-making and why so many worthy films never see the light of day. Please don't let this happen to us.

Our film employs an original way to trace the sources of Barney Rosset's rebelliousness, obsessions and legacy. When he died, Barney left behind a wall of memories, obsessively sculpted and painted on a 15' x 20' wall of his East Village loft during the last three years of his life.  Each intricate vignette is a memory, which served as portals for us to enter into the experiences and obsessions that shaped him as a rebel.

Barney's wall in his iconic East Village loft, now destroyed. Our film is the only record of Barney's sculptural wall and his loft, before gentrification eradicated both
Barney's wall in his iconic East Village loft, now destroyed. Our film is the only record of Barney's sculptural wall and his loft, before gentrification eradicated both

Barney would have been gratified –– though not surprised –– to see his 2012 obit appear on the front page of The New York Times.

All his life Barney fought for the rights of others to tell their stories. Help us now to tell his.

In gratitude for your support we have created truly unusual rewards. (Yes, you will be able later to select t-shirt size and style):

Don't forget to request your FOIA file

Feeling paranoid? Well, you should be, and with the return of our popular backers exclusive laminated bookmark you can mark that timely reminder in your novel, your desk diary or your pile of bills (right on top of your cable provider's invoice). One side’s innocuous as a photo-booth strip; the other will keep you alert with literary reminders from William S. Burroughs and George Orwell’s "1984." Yeah, “Big Brother’s Watching You” and you’re paranoid, but everything’s still cool because “A paranoid is someone who knows a little of what’s going on.”

Featuring the censored cover of the high school magazine "Anti-Everything" published by teenagers Barney Rosset and Haskell Wexler (director of the counterculture classic film "Medium Cool" and Barney's life-time best friend). Who knew then that they would transform America's middle-brow culture and inspire generations to come?

"Change your life today. Don't gamble on the future, act now, without delay." - Simone de Beauvoir

Feminist and writer Simone de Beauvoir was adamant about preserving her independence, her desire for freedom, her joie de vivre, her curiosity and her need to write. (De Beauvoir was one of the first writers published by Barney Rosset, in 1953, just two years after he founded Grove Press in 1951.)  Carry on and celebrate her spirit.

Jacmel, Haiti, as it was in 1954 before 2010's devastating hurricane
Jacmel, Haiti, as it was in 1954 before 2010's devastating hurricane
This stunning 4 feet by 3 feet framed painting was purchased in 1954 by Barney Rosset from the Haitian artist Decius Vital (b.1920) in his Port-au-Prince studio. It was one of Barney's favorite paintings and hung on his loft wall for over thirty years - you can see it there all through our film. Decius Vital and his brother Pauleus Vital became prominent among Haitian painters. Haitian art is a complex tradition, reflecting African roots with strong Indigenous American and European aesthetic and religious influences. Take a deep breath and help support our cause by acquiring this important representation of Haitian culture and history.

20. Barney Rosset's Own 1966 "Come Alive" Poster

Our rallying cry
Our rallying cry

Yes, that's Allen Ginsberg! Put us over the finish line and hang Barney Rosset's own framed "Come Alive" poster in your apartment or office. It hung on Barney Rosset's loft wall for forty years. This framed, mint condition original poster (donated back to us by our first Kickstarter patron) from Grove's 1966 NYC subway marketing campaign is one of the iconic countercultural posters of all time. Pledge NOW and rejoin the underground!

You can help us immensely if you click on the social media buttons below to ask your friends and family to help build traffic to our campaign page. Depending on the number of donors (however small the pledge) our page can remain featured on the Kickstarter site and generate more 'traffic' and pledges for us. So every little bit helps us. We've made it easy for you. Just click on the buttons below.

Or you could copy and paste this suggested message into your favored social media:

AND DO YOU KNOW OF EDUCATIONAL OR CULTURAL VENUES THAT WOULD BE INTERESTED IN SPONSORing A PRIVATE SCREENING AND TAILORED PANEL?

We've been private screening to raise awareness of the threats to First Amendment and civil rights. We've had a panel on Beckett at NYC's Irish Repertory Theater; a panel on censorship at NYU's Forum on Law, Culture and Society; a panel on the Beats in San Francisco sponsored by City Lights Bookstore; a panel on avant-garde publishing in Paris.

A filmmaker without funding is a musician without an instrument, an artist without a canvas, a writer with a forever blank page.

We all know how dependent artists are upon the generosity of patrons. We are very grateful for your continuing support because we truly could not have come as far as we have without all of you. Thank you from the bottom of our rebel hearts.

Risks and challenges

It's common for documentaries to take longer to make than you hope, and certainly this film has. Because of our test screenings and panels, we made a hard decision half-way through to retool and incorporate more images and videos and music to bring more energy. That cost us time and money. We’ve spent almost three years researching, filming, editing, and private test screening this documentary. Our film is completed, but to release it we must cover the costs of intellectual property licensing rights for voluminous archival footage, video and film clips and photographs, as well as the cost for a music supervisor to finalize master, publishing, performance, and sync rights. Without these permissions our film can not be insured or released.

We have done full due diligence in tracking copyrights using an intellectual property rights attorney. For extra legal protection we have been executing licensing agreements for all materials. The Rosset Estate and Barney's friends and family are backing us. We're all a team.

We count on you to help us take this final step in acquiring a distribution deal to get BARNEY'S WALL released in theaters, streaming outlets such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and PBS. We're aiming high.

You are all very much a part of our film. We consider this a community project and utterly timely in this era of increasing overreaching government authority.

Based on our three-year investment in the project, our loyal backers to date, our professional track records, the success of our press outreach and extensive media coverage, and our many private test screenings, we're confident that with completed licensing agreements and full insurance coverage we can get our film immediately into the hands of an experienced sales and distribution agent.

We all know how dependent artists are upon the generosity of patrons. We are very grateful for your continuing support because we truly could not have come as far as we have without all of you.

    VINTAGE BARNEY HAITIAN ART

NOTE: CELL PHONE VIEWERS MUST SCROLL UP AND CLICK 'Campaign' TO SEE REWARD IMAGES.

This stunning 4 feet by 3 feet framed painting was purchased in 1954 by Barney Rosset from the Haitian artist Decius Vital (b.1920) in his Port-au-Prince studio. It was one of Barney's favorite paintings. Decius Vital and his brother Pauleus Vital became prominent among Haitian painters. Haitian art is a complex tradition, reflecting African roots with strong Indigenous American and European aesthetic and religious influences. BIG CHEESE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER CREDIT

Major good karma act. Beyond any largesse, you'll be known as taking a moral stand for diversity and tolerance and against menacing talk of governmental roll back of our individual rights. We believe audiences need to understand how this easily can happen again.

With this pledge, you will earn a maximum starring role, echoing Barney Rosset's stance against censorship of the artistic imagination. You'll join our big name roster of executive producers who have been with us from the beginning. You'll earn an Executive Producer credit in the film, IMBD page, and our promotional materials, along with premium seating at the film's premiere with the filmmakers and Astrid Rosset and members of the cast (travel costs not included), as well as a special invitation for you and your guest to our rocking after-party with us.

And to help you dress for the occasion we're giving you your wardrobe: the Badass Barney Multiple T-shirt Box. And our Barney Midnight Triple DVD reward.

But wait, there's more! The filmmakers and co-producer Astrid Rosset will take you and a guest to cocktails and dinner in New York City at the legendary East Village Knickerbocker Grill (Barney Rosset's favorite hangout, where his booth is still sacrosanct).

You will see your name on the big screen when we roll your name in the film's credits, and receive an exclusive link to advance stream the film.

You'll be a principal member of Team Barney and we will love you for it.

Above all you will have scored big for helping us save what we believe is an historic film and getting it to audiences who do not know the history of the fragility of our individual rights.

If you are already one of our executive producers you and we know that you truly have helped make this film happen because you believed in us from the beginning. A big high five from all of us at Team Barney. We owe this film to you.
