Pithy modernity in romantic agony. Melville and Kafka parked outside a 7/11; H. Miller busts in to start ranting about the internet.

              (from, "A TIA for Gia")

Gia had been working the night shift for about six weeks. She was always a little early, but one day she came in right at the time of her shift to find the register was alone in the back counted out for her, with a post-it note reading: “Gotta run, hope all is OK text me,” with Andre’s number scratched at the bottom. The last shift manager had left the money alone! What was going on?

Seven Eleven Ceremony and other short stories

is simply a collection of my latest short stories. The stories named after 7/11 were based on the number of philosophical conversations I kept having with a certain friend of mine while walking or driving to and from one franchise or another.

As part of my reward system, I am offering to write stories of varying lengths based on your own experience involving a convenience store.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The bottom line is that I will stop at nothing to see a product I personally want on my shelf, and if that means sending two or three rejected one-offs back to production then so be it. I am considering digging deeper than my first quotes and finding companies that deal in unusual, authentic material, recycled materials, etc. Having done the research I have, I am confident my project goal of $6,000 will produce an edition of this book I am utterly happy to supply to my patrons and market to the world. A delay is the worst case scenario, extra funds will go to marketing and distribution.

Some may be concerned about my use of a major convenience store for the cover. I have written to the party in question, however from my research I believe I am in good shape with regard to fair use, in that no-one will confuse me with the brand itself. If I have reason for concern about this at the time of production, I will add a disclaimer to the book's cover somewhere. It would be a pleasure.

"Use in Fiction
Portraying a logo in a fictional work, be it movie or illustrated novel, would generally not be considered an infringement as long as the use doesn’t confuse the viewer on who owns the logo’s trademark. The use of trademarks in fiction is recognized as a means for enhancing realism in a story, though the movie industry has turned that around by not only seeking permission to use logos, but selling their use to the trademark owners as product placement. Use of a logo in a fictional work that disparages the logo owner can be ruled a trademark infringement, yet use of the logo in connection with a non-fictional work of criticism is fair use."

FAQ

  • Probably not, the collection is pretty well in place, but you never know. For the 150, or the 1500 dollar pledge promising a story, I will tuck a copy of that story into your book, or send it to you separately. I will also send a digital copy to you if you'd like.

The first 150 dollar contributor reverted the rights of the idea back to me, and I was happy enough with the story to put it in but mostly what I'm promising here is a story in my own style from your concept. A very personal thank you note to do with as you please.

  • No. This is my book, a jumping off point for an ongoing publication of various authors to follow. If you pledge and identify yourself as an author in the survey, I will keep your name on a priority list for all future submissions to the ongoing publication out of appreciation.

  • We don't know. The diptych (7500) and the stand alone (5000) are both such fantastic pieces that I'm going back and forth on how to use them. Currently favoriting the stand alone because the proportions are shaped for the cover, but the diptych could be a wrap around for a hardcover version as well.

In short, they will both be used in some capacity for the design of this book. Please message any other questions about the art and I will personally ask the artist if I don't know.

  • The 1000 dollar pledge is actual notes I took while composing the story, "Seven Eleven Forgotten," and therefor an artifact of the project. The others are kind of a joke item to go along with the book and point up how gritty the process of writing for this author tends to be--I'll take notes anywhere, on pretty much anything at hand. If you would rather have the book signed the next reward up is the way to go.
