As graduates of the College of Environmental Design at UC Berkeley, we were taught to be conscientious of our impact on the environment with each design move we made. We were also encouraged to look at nature as an inspiration and a collaborative element that could allow our designs to be instrumental in bringing humans and our natural surroundings to a more harmonious existence. The Minimal Duck strives to provide design solutions that embrace eco-friendly alternatives, which is why we chose to work with cork, a perfect, long-lasting substitute for leather. No animals harmed, and no trees cut down.
Cork is…beautifully natural.
Straight from the tree to your hand, this thinly cut cork is layered onto fabric by sewing or light gluing to create a skin that is silky smooth to the touch with unexpected grip. Non-toxic and germ-repelling, cork will age with grace, picking up the natural oils from your skin and turning a warm amber color.
Cork is…practical and smart.
Cork’s lightweight quality and high water resistance make it an ideal material for a minimal wallet to carry your essential cards, and some cash. Easily cleaned with soap and water, cork fabric is as durable as leather and can be stowed in your pocket or thrown into your bag or purse.
Cork is…environmentally consious.
Cork comes from the cork oak tree, Quercus suber, and can be harvested every 9-12 years by removing the outermost layer of bark called the cambium, making it an invaluable renewable resource. No harm is caused to the tree during the removal of bark, a process that can be sustained throughout the 200+ year lifetime of the tree. To regenerate the harvested bark, the cork oak absorbs up to five times as much CO2 as an untouched tree.
We've made working prototypes and we absolutely love them! We need your help to purchase our laser cutter and materials to bring products from our pockets to yours.

Risks and challenges
There is a chance in having a delay with receiving our Laser cutter, however this is minimal because we have already secured a supplier and the shipment is pending payment.
We have found a good reliable source for the cork fabric, though there is the possibility of the company being low stock, in which case we have a back up supplier as well.
This is Arash's second kickstarter project. The first project was delivered on time and is getting awesome feedback! Quite a few obstacles were faced but it was a learning process that taught Arash how to make future projects run smoother. Check it out:
