New goal - 1000 backers!
The support for 'Bare Reality' on Kickstarter has been amazing! There is a clearly an appetite for un-airbushed, honest photography and our powerful, personal stories.
If you would like a copy of the 'Bare Reality' book please pre-order through Kickstarter because it is probably the only time it will ever be published. Since I am self-publishing I can only afford to print the copies which are ordered. I would love to aim for 1,000 backers.
The additional funds will pay for printing the extra copies of the book, and I will also be able to opt for higher quality paper and cover, to make the book even more beautiful.
What is BARE REALITY?
'BARE REALITY: 100 women and their breasts' is a project which explores how women feel about their breasts. 100 women bare all, bravely sharing un-airbrushed photographs of their breasts alongside personal stories about their breasts and their lives. With your help, I would like to conclude the project with a book. You can effectively pre-order your copy of Bare Reality here on Kickstarter, or pledge your support with a different reward.
There has been so much public debate about breasts recently, from Free the Nipple to No More Page 3, from breastfeeding selfies on Facebook to Rihanna on the red carpet, from Scout Willis's topless walk through New York to Grace Coddington's banned cartoon on Instagram. I think the time has never been better to hear how women really feel about their breasts, and to see how they really look.
More than simply part of our bodies, breasts represent sexuality, motherhood and femininity. When we talk about breasts we talk about intimate aspects of our lives as women, such as growing up, sexuality, motherhood, breastfeeding, relationships, body image, health, cancer and ageing.
Women aged from 19 to 101 years old took part, sized AAA to K, of different sexualities and different ethnicities. From all walks of life, their perspectives and experiences are diverse: Buddhist nun, social workers, strippers, career women, stay at home mums, burlesque dancer, full/long term breastfeeders, women who couldn't breastfeed or didn't want to, female vicar, nurses, cancer survivors, a club night promoter whose pseudonym is ‘Captain Hello Titties’, and so many more!
I'm honoured and excited that Soraya Chemaly, the respected feminist writer and activist will write a foreword for the book. She writes regularly on the topic of the relationship between cultural ideas about women's bodies and their rights.
Meeting, photographing and interviewing these wonderful women has been an incredible adventure. Bare Reality has changed how I think and feel about women as well as transformed my relationship with my breasts. I hope you will be moved and inspired by the wonderful women who have taken part in Bare Reality.
This is how we look. This is how we feel.
Each week I will share a photograph and story from 'Bare Reality: 100 women and their breasts'. Please click on the photograph below for your preview
Bare Reality is featured in the Guardian's Weekend magazine. There are five excerpts and it gives a good introduction to the project. Click here!
Bare Reality will donate £1.00 from every book sold to Breast Cancer UK, a charity that aims to prevent breast cancer before it starts by reducing public exposure to the harmful chemicals in our environment, food and every day products.
Here's what Breast Cancer UK have to say about BARE REALITY:
'Breast Cancer UK is delighted to support Bare Reality’s ‘Kickstarter’ campaign. This touching, inspirational book cuts through the sexual objectification of breasts and encapsulates how unique, yet similar, we all are. Each story provides a beautifully tender insight into the diversity of our emotions about our breasts throughout life’s stages and experiences.
We hope this work will become a powerful force for social change by encouraging more women to speak freely about their breasts and inspiring them to find out more about breast cancer and the wide range of risk factors associated with the disease.
We gratefully accept the author’s kind offer of a donation from the sale of each book, which will help us to continue our work to prevent breast cancer before it starts by reducing our routine exposure to the harmful chemicals in our every day products, food and environment.'
Please support BARE REALITY
What will you gain from reading this book? If you are a man, you might not have seen as many ‘real’ breasts, or heard women be so frank. As a woman you might be interested in seeing what other women’s breasts look like and take heart: no one is perfectly symmetrical, many women perceive themselves to be too large, too small, too saggy. If you are younger and still developing, you might be curious to see ‘real’ breasts, learn about other women’s experiences, and gain an insight into your own potential future.
Please support Bare Reality. In return I will send you a unique and beautiful book about women and their breasts. Not only do I hope you will love your own copy of Bare Reality but I also think it would make a great present for your female friends, your daughter, your mum, or your partner.
The important thing with Kickstarter is this: if I don’t raise the full amount of money I need to finish the production and printing, it will not go ahead as a printed book, and your card is not debited. If I raise the full amount of money I can print and post out the books (or send ebooks) to those who pledged. If you think you want the book, or you would like to support the project, this is THE time to do it!
Bare Reality has been fuelled on passion alone for the last two years. I'm excited to finally be ready to publish the book! If you would like to own or gift a copy of Bare Reality please support my Kickstarter campaign. This may be the only time the book is ever printed. I have carefully put together the leanest budget I can to produce a coffee table book with production values which I hope will do justice to the subject matter and the women who have taken part. If I exceed the budget I will be able to opt for better quality paper and cover, so please don't stop if you see me hit the target!
Thank you for looking at the Kickstarter page for Bare Reality! (Now please tell all your friends!)
Thank you to all the women who took part in Bare Reality You have been so incredible. I loved meeting you and learnt so much. I hope the finished book will move you like it has moved me.
Huge thanks to the talented Lindsay Katt for allowing me to use her beautiful music in the video.
Thank you to Cassandra Mayers for putting together the video for me.
Risks and challenges
All 100 women have been photographed and interviewed already. I have a brilliant team of printer, editor and designer. With your support we can finish the production process and print a beautiful, high quality book.
It's possible that the production could be delayed by various factors beyond my control. I'd rather be able to send you a book that looks wonderful on your coffee table, a book that you are proud to give to a friend, than rush it. I'll keep you informed of the timescales at each stage.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
