The warriors of the Tooth and Blade will fight for Ostora, to protect the people of this land from the dangers that stalk it. And somehow, if they live, they will find a place for themselves in this fresh country.
But there's a long road ahead for Captain Pelekarr of the cavalry and Damicos of the foot soldiers, if they're to establish the fledgling company's reputation and navigate the local barons' intrigues. The Kerathi military has pulled out, and the barbarian tribesmen are massing for battle. Every day brings new threats, from forest behemoths that can devour a horse, to packs of pale apes that are far more cunning than they seem.
And somewhere, deep in the vast wilderness beyond the coast, lies a lost settlement with a source of wealth and power that will change not only Ostora, but the entire world. If the Tooth and Blade can claim it, they'll become legends.
They might die trying.
Keltos - A young cavalryman with nothing to lose, from a disgraced family in the old country. He comes to Ostora to regain honor, if that's possible, by the edge of his bronze sword. He and his best friend and fellow bannerman, Makos, are always at the heart of the action next to their captain.
Pelekarr - Aristocratic captain of the cavalry arm of the Tooth and Blade, Ios Pelekarr has a tactician's mind and a poetic flair. He leads his men cautiously in the absence of the generals he once relied on, but will face brutal challenges and dilemmas that stretch his morality to the breaking point.
Damicos - Captain of the Tooth and Blade's infantry, a grim brigade of shield-and-spear hoplites that will face any danger for the promise of gold. Damicos is pragmatic and cunning, but the dangers he and his men now face force him to learn the ways of this new land more quickly than he thought possible.
Cormoran - The most experienced veteran of the fledgling company, a spearman who's lost more comrades to the monsters of Ostora than he cares to count. On the inside, though, he's generous and loyal.
Perian - A fierce and wild woman of the White River tribe of Ostora, who makes a commitment to guide the company in return for help along her path as a shaman. A commitment that will have farther-reaching consequences than anyone realizes...
Shad Callister was raised on tales of ancient mythology from the old world as well as history and folklore from the younger wilderness of America. He now writes his own stories of science fiction and epic fantasy from his home in the mountain West, exploring both the heroics of the past and the dangers of the future.
The impetus for this new entry in the up-and-coming Military Fantasy genre came from one image: a band of desperate sword and spear-era French Foreign Legionnaires facing a newly discovered land full of terrifying monsters. This quickly developed into a tale that parallels the early European settlement of the American continent, something like a French and Indian War with monsters added in to the mix. But since I'm a history buff and a stickler for realism (as far as possible in a world with monsters and mysticism), every detail of the battles in this book are based on real accounts of ancient warfare. The bronze-age weaponry, the battlefield tactics, and the characters will ring true to readers familiar with military tactics. All while being wildly entertaining, of course - after all, there are huge monsters and bloodthirsty savages infesting every corner of Ostora.
Cover Art and Maps
- For the Kickstarter 1st Edition of Tooth and Blade: Book One we have commissioned a detailed Map of Ostora by fantasy cartographer Jessica Khoury to be included both in the text and as a separate Backer reward.
- Battle Maps hand-drawn by the author will be included throughout the text.
- The specially commissioned Cover Art by artist Jeff Brown will be part of a fantasy panorama, so that each cover of the complete trilogy will line up together as a single picture. All three covers will make a great art set.
- Ebooks will be in both Kindle and ePub formats for reading on any device.
- Paperback copies will be fulfilled through Amazon POD.
- Book One is approximately 500 pages, and in the final editing and formatting stage. It will be ready for delivery beginning of December.
