RAINBOW REEF: a sit-com starring Ed Asner & Danilo DiJulio.
A Riding with the Whales Production.
Our project will be successfully funded, using multiple sources of financing. But make no mistakes about it my friends...
YOU ARE THE KEY TO SUCCESS!!!
The more you pledge, the more we can shoot! AND The better we can shoot! More money means being able to afford royalties for "real songs" by real musical artists that will bring back memories for our audience! ...and the real songs are just that much more awesome!!!
Post production, editing, color correction are all areas where you want to be able to spare no expense for the best possible product. With your backing, "Rainbow Reef" will be it's butt kickingest self!
Here's a quick synopsis of the show:
RAINBOW REEF, a fish out of water comedy.
Jack McGowan lives the high life in the fast paced, white collar world of the stock market but, when his boss is arrested for insider trading, Jack goes from Wolf of Wall Street to the doghouse overnight.
Sadly, when Jack falls down and breaks his crown, no one comes tumbling after...because no one seems to care. When his beautiful girlfriend realizes the SEC has frozen Jack's accounts and he's basically penniless, she goes terminator. "H'asta la vista baby!" (we have a big name actress in mind)
After a few months of misery, Jack finds an old email from his old Uncle Chet, who has passed away and left him “Rainbow Reef”, a ramshackle scuba shop.
Jack flies out planning to sell the shop, fly back to New York and use the money to get back into the stock game. When he gets to the reef however, he soon discovers he is in for more than he bargained for in business, love and battle!
Jack meets a cute girl, Lisa when he first arrives and soon discovers she's his chief dive instructor. Mr. Krampus (played by Asner), the nice old man in those scuba store commercials on TV, turns out to be Jack's new nemesis and worst nightmare and wants to see Jack headed back to NYC ASAP!
Will Jack stay and fight for Rainbow Reef or will he head back to the Big Apple? What are Mr. Krampus's plans for the scuba shop and it's good hearted yet quirky crew of employees? And what about Lisa? Will Jack ever see her again? Will Lisa care?
You never know what might happen out on Rainbow Reef.
OKAY, LET'S MEET THE CAST!!!
We are extremely excited to say we have a LEGENDARY star, nothing short of a television ICON, on the cast of our production. Kickstarting crowd please help us welcome...
The legendary MR. ED ASNER
Ed will star as MR. RICHARD KRAMPUS, the owner of the big box scuba store, Super Scuba. To the public eye Mr. Krampus is a fun loving, pot smoking, Jimmy Buffett wanna be with a pony tail and flip flops. But behind closed doors he is a hard nosed business man who wants nothing more than to put RAINBOW REEF, out of business!
In other words we have set up Ed for nothing less than comedy gold. Not that he really needs to be set up at all, but we like to think we play a small part in this whole thing. It makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
He has been nominated for fifteen primetime emmy awards and won seven (more than any man in the history of the emmys) as well as eleven golden globe nominations with five wins. He has a star on the Hollywood walk of fame and a lifetime achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild. He has starred in TV shows that literally defined the way television is produced today. It is nothing short an honor to work with him.
IT JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER!
Not only do we have the honor of having the legendary Ed Asner on set with us but we also have one of the hottest up and coming stars in the business today. He is a comedy genius and one of the Whales himself. Give up some love for...
MR. DANILO DI JULIO
Danilo will be playing the part of our male lead JACK McGOWAN, a white collar Wolf of Wall Street at the top of the investment game in New York. Money, multi-million dollar apartment, cool car and super hot girlfriend.
Until his boss is arrested for insider trading and he loses everything except his freedom. (William Wallace would be proud. Gordon Gecko, not so much.)
Just when all hope seems lost, Jack finds out he has been left a Scuba Shop called "Rainbow Reef". But is there a pot of gold at the end of this rainbow? Or just Mr. Krampus's size 11 boot and a bulldozer?
Mr. Di Julio has been involved in major projects both dramatic and comedic, both in Film and television, showing time and time again, his acting chops can stand up next to the best of them. Also, if you turn on your TV there's a good chance you'll see him in one of his many commercials.
His role in the oscar winning film Argo is just the start of his resume of more than fifteen years in the business. His credits, to name a few, include hit shows such as "The Office", "Parks and Recreation" and "Trophy Wife" along with his most recent roles as supporting actor/director/writer/editor of the sitcom "Band Life" as well as a lead role in the thriller "Silent Retreat".
WE KEEP ADDING CAST AND THE SHOW JUST GETS FUNNIER!
Our next cast member is one of the funniest young comedians on the road today. We honestly tried to hire him one time just to follow us around and make us laugh. True story. Say hello too...
MR. BOBBY BANULEOS
As a matter of fact we are going to give you a special treat today and show you a little of why we think Bobby is so hilarious and why we have asked him to be on the show.
Bobby will be playing the part of DRAKE COLLINS, a bit of a brown noser and definitely OCD. He is the hardest working employee at the shop. Which is not really a compliment.
Drake takes great pride in his looks, is in great physical shape and oddly enough knows all there is to know about Mark Walberg and Chaning Tatum.
A huge fan of Jack’s, Drake can be the sweetest man ever but can also get a little catty from time to time.
Mr. Banuelos got his acting chops and quick wit working the stage in theaters across the United States and doing stand up at such legendary clubs as The Laugh Factory, The Comedy Store, The Ha Ha Club and the University of (fill in your local school, he has played 'em all).
Recently he has been in shows like, "It happened in a Coffee Shop", "Tyborg", "Slideshow" and we were lucky enough to have him be a part of our sitcom "Band Life". We are so happy he said yes to this project and know he will bring his infectious energy to the set every day.
WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE CAST?
We are steadily building the cast and are currently talking to a number of extremely talented actors. Some of them you have heard of and some are about to become household names. We want the right chemistry on our show and are currently working with a terrific casting director to make it happen!
When we get a new cast member we will update the page right away (or as soon as we stop shaking from excitement) and keep you in the loop. :)
But hey it doesn't mean we can't tell you about the other characters on the show. So here they are just for you.
LISA CALIVARI The girl Jack falls for at Rainbow Reef. Born in San Francisco, Lisa knows nothing else but ocean life. She loves the water and all of the wonderful creatures therein with a passion.
She has a masters in Marine Biology and a minor in art history from the University of Miami. She lives for the ocean and is a Master Scuba Diver Trainer.
She is a huge football fan and never misses a 49ers game at the bar.
Comfortable in a cocktail dress or at a bon fire in Daisy Dukes and sandals, Lisa is a well rounded woman.
She was burned by a college boyfriend who cheated on her with her best friend...who happened to be her roommate...and also her twin sister...so she has walls of stone surrounding her heart.
Much like Jack, the one thing missing from her life is love. She swears up and down she will never fall in love again but can’t help wanting someone to share her life with.
She works at Rainbow Reef because Jack's Uncle Chet was like a father to her. She desperately wants to keep his dream alive and her beloved Rainbow Reef safe from progress and destructive change.
DERRICK JAMESON Derrick is Jack's best friend and pure Boston Irish through and through.
Don’t get him started on the Red Sox, The Pats, The Celtics or the Bruins. You will lose an ear.
Derrick was raised by his Grandmother but grew up with money from a large settlement he got after his parents died in a plane crash when he was nine.
He has a heart of gold but lacks the moral filter on his mouth, that most people have, and comes off as an ass most of the time. So most people hate him to start with but, like a fungus, he grows on you over time.
His primary motivation in life is Boston's sports teams and women. Oddly, yes, in that order.
LINDSEY MARVEL Lindsey is young but she has been around the block a few times and is not to be trifled with.
Raised by a single mother who worked a lot and was rarely home. Lindsey had to fend for herself at an early age.
She is full on beautiful but all kinds of tomboy and never without a knife or two close at hand. How she hides them in a bikini is a mystery that may never be solved.
Hard on the outside but soft in the middle (don't call her Tootsie Pop, she hates that) she has a soft spot for all things cuddly.
She is great with numbers which is why they keep her on at Rainbow Reef. Sure, she has an attitude, but she keeps the books balanced.
HOW WE ARE GOING TO MAKE IT HAPPEN?
Rainbow Reef will be shot entirely on location in Puerto Rico, Hawaii or Florida which have varying substantial tax incentive from 20 – 80 percent. This tax incentives will help fund the show and keep costs down. Allowing us to produce a high quality ready to air product that can go straight to series on any network at a low cost. There will also be a blueprint in place detailing how we were able to shoot the pilot and where we are able to keep costs down. Networks love saving money! Making it more attractive to networks when it comes to sale.
We are working with potential show sponsors to provide gear, props and costumes to bring the cost of the production down even further and those partnership will be vital in the making of the show.
More important than any sponsor though, is YOU! Your donations will make the show happen! With your backing, we will not only be able to bring this show to life in your living room but, we will also have a proven pre-existing fan base in place before we even shoot a single frame! That's like an aphrodisiac to networks...is it getting hot in here?
Together, we can do it! Help us bring some quality comedy, that you want to see and are directly a part of, into your home. We will make this promise to you right here and now. This will not be the last time we give something back to our fans and supporters for believing in us. After all you are the reason we are doing this whole thing.
$400,000...WHY SO MUCH?
Good question. We are glad you asked.
The answer is Quality! We completed our first pilot last year in 5 days and spent around $12,000. It is a great show and it turned out very well...for a $12,000 effort. The problem was, it wasn't network ready and our actors, though talented and full of spirit, were all unknowns. A first time show by a new production company, with a first time TV director and unknown cast...any one of those could be a non-starter but compiled together they make for a tough sell.
All of that said, the feedback we most consistently got from executives was, "Wow...you did that for under $12,000?" They were so used to just getting pitched concept and scripts, that the idea of two first time producers bringing a show to the table that was already in the can? Well, that turned some heads.
The other two things we heard most often were, "...needs to be a little more polished" and "You've got to have a few names". Well, so far we have Ed Asner and we're in talks with a hand full of up and coming actors who have been on the big screen and in your living room quite a bit. Not to mention a crew ten times the size of our last effort to add all the polish we need.
With your backing, reaching and surpassing our goal of $400,000 will go a long way to securing the talent we are in talks with and getting "Rainbow Reef" the network looks it deserves. That money will not only help us afford some seriously talented people on camera, but some amazing professionals behind the scenes as well.
We are doing the entire show from pre-production to final edit and marketing after the show is complete, all with your help. This is a complete campaign with a goal unlike any other project currently out there. A primetime network TV slot where you can watch the show you helped create every week.
Honestly our budget is almost $800,000 but we have used our heads on this one friends. We are using tax incentives, our own funds and this fantastic kickstarter crowd funding platform to reach our goal. We aren't asking you to do it all for us but partner with us to make this happen.
We honestly expect great things from you and believe we will surpass our goal and every time we double our goal we will shoot a completely new show. If we hit $800,000, you'll see another show produced by 'the Whales'! So donate what you can and tell your friends about us so they can check us out too.
Now, we're sure you have more questions and we are going to try and answer them all. If you do have more questions just hit us up on Facebook and we will do our best to answer them as quickly as possible.
SO WHAT ABOUT THE CREW?
When we did "Band Life" we had a skeleton crew...and our skeleton was missing a few bones. Not this time!
We know that we have an amazing cast so far and that it is only going to get better.
But what about the crew? The people on the ground who help make the show a winner (and the director's life easier) with their everyday efforts.
The truth is you can have the best cast in the world but if your crew doesn't know what they are doing the show is going to suffer.
This time around we are fully crewed up! Our people from top to bottom are some of the industries best in their fields. Before we roll, we will release a crew list along with some of their choice credits. You will be impressed...that is if you're a fan of major network and cable TV.
Like us, they are dedicated to making a fantastic show and committed to our company philosophy of working in a family oriented environment and giving back to the community.
So who are they you ask? Great question. You are really on top of things. Maybe we should hire you to work on the show too.
Why don't we just introduce a few of them to you so you can see for yourself how awesome they are.
First up is the man who runs all the day to day crew operations and makes us look really, really good!
RAMI RANK - Unit Production Manager
RAMI is a top notch UPM and has a resume that would impress even the most seasoned professionals.
With shows like Dexter, Across the Hall, April Fools Day, Insatiable and Hack on his resume it is easy to see why we have him on our crew.
We think the whole RR initials thing is just one of those universal road signs that let you know you've made the best choice possible.
Next we have our artistic visionary. Because lets face it if it were left up to us the sets would all look just like our house.
JAMES "JIMMY" WORKMAN - Art Director
Jimmy has been in the business since 1995 and anyone you ask will praise his work ethic, sense of vision and intense passion for what he does.
With shows like Twilight, Revenge, Neighbors, Body of Proof, Las Vegas, In the Line of Duty, The Postman, The Fugitive, Dante's Peak and our favorite Into the Wild under his belt we think we have made a pretty good choice.
We have been working with our next crew member since 2007 and she is one of the most professional people in the biz. Not to mention one of the nicest.
TERILEE "TL" HUFF - Locations Manager
TL is always gonna make you smile which is why she is so good at what she does and now she's doing it for the Whales. Man can she work a deal for the right location at the right price and still leave em with a smile.
With shows like Dexter, America's Most Wanted, Heartland, Bones, House, State of Play, Race to Witch Mountain, Hero's, Zeke & Luther, Sons of Anarchy, Jack and Jill, The Finder, Parenthood, Legit and Powder Blue (the movie we met her on) topping her list of jobs well done. It's not surprising we snapped her up the moment she became available.
Next on deck is the Bulldog of the set. The man that makes it happen when the day runs long and we have to get that last shot. As well as the right hand man to our Director and a heck of a nice guy.
CHARLES EDWARD BENNETT - 1st Assistant Director
Charles is built like an NFL tight end and with a booming voice that commands compliance so, we predict our director's vocal chords will be just fine when he is on camera. Charles has a very extensive resume but we are just going to put it to you like this...
HE WORKED ON ALL 8 SEASONS OF DEXTER! ENOUGH SAID!!!
Okay there you go. Some of the highlights of our production and the skilled people behind it all.
Thanks so much for your backing and your belief in "Rainbow Reef". Please tell your friends, your family and the guy you sit next to at lunch everyday that smells like smoke and Cheerios (even though he says he doesn't smoke and you never see him eat Cheerios) all about the project and how they can be a part of it too.
Remember the more we raise the more shows we can shoot and the better each one will be!
We can not begin to express our graditude to you for all that you have done. But we are sure going to try by making you laugh every week on primetime. See you on the small screen soon.
Love & Peace,
J.T. Ouinn - Producer/Writer - Co-founder RWTW Productions
Danilo Di Julio - Actor/Director/Producer/Writer - Co-founder RWTW Productions

Risks and challenges
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter The biggest challenge is distribution – our show does not yet have a home and that is arguably the hardest part of the business next to funding.
So how do we give ourselves the best chance?
1) We start with a great story for a funny and uplifting show. Check.
2) We add and amazing cast and crew that is completely professional and ready to go into full series production. Check.
3) We shoot a great quality show. This is where you come in with your donations and partner up with us the first time making it all possible.
4) Then we walk through the door of the networks with a proven fan base. That is where you come in and boost us up on your shoulders a second time without spending a dime.
5) When we show the network what a large number of contributors backed our show, we prove to the bean counters that our show has interest before it is even marketed let alone airs and we separate ourselves from the crowd.
Be part of the team that helps us check boxes 1 through 5! Tell everyone you know and tell them to tell everyone they know. Then start telling people you don't know at all. Remember we have a $1 donation with a very cool reward and that is just the start. With a $5 donation and up you get at least two rewards. But we need more than just money, we need you on our side in numbers.
Our goal is to get Rainbow Reef on the schedule of a major network. When you fund the project, we intend to finish pre-production right away, shoot in late May/early June, and finish the shows post production by the first part of July. That way we can get all of those cool rewards in your hands by the end of July or early August.
There's a very accomplished team behind the scenes and we have no doubts we can achieve our goals. But your help is essential.
Your rewards like t-shirts and posters for helping us make this possible will be sent out by a professional fulfillment company. Many elements of the rewards will be fulfilled well before July of 2014, which is when we hope the show is picked up and to have our premieres and screenings. For you big backers who are attending an event or joining us on set, we will do our best to give you as much notice as possible about our schedule so you can plan your travel and accommodations accordingly.
LEGAL STUFF BECAUSE OUR LAWYERS MAKE US.
- For those of you visiting our set, we anticipate shooting in MAY/JUNE in Puerto Rico or Hawaii or Florida. However, this has the potential to change. We will keep you updated so you can plan ahead to visit us.
- If you become an extra or receive a cast or associate producer credit, you must be a US citizen or have a US work visa, and not be a member of SAG/AFTRA.
- You must be over 18 or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian (who will count as your plus one) to attend the premiere or visit the set. Extras must also be over 18.
- All cast Skype calls are at the cast members discretion. If they feel you are being offensive or abusive in any way we reserve the right to end the call. (so be nice)
- Some rewards may require additional paperwork. If you are appearing in the film or scuba diving, you will have to sign a release.
- The final cut of the show may have to be further edited in certain cases to adhere to the laws in the country which it is being viewed, or for different types of media.
- All shooting locations are subject to change for a variety of reasons, including the amount of money we are able to raise and the particular locations giving us the right to shoot.
- This fundraising campaign is all subject to applicable Kickstarter rules/regulations, movie guild rules and applicable law. if any of this conflicts, we will work with you in good faith to give you a substitute reward.
So to put it simply the TV and motion picture business is crazy from start to finish. But it is our kind of crazy and we are good at what we do. There are a lot of unknown factors. We have all the elements in place to make a first class production but it is impossible to plan for every contingency. At the end of this road we can guarantee only one thing. We will have a show that we all (yep that includes you too because you're part of the team now) can be proud to be a part of and it will make you laugh until it hurts.
We can not thank you enough for helping us out in our quest. We will try to show our thanks by making a show that runs for many seasons and gives you laughs for years to come.
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE!!!
