Thank you for looking at our Kickstarter page! Bananarchy is Austin's only frozen banana stand, founded in 2009 by us (Laura and Anna). Throughout the years, we've received many inquiries asking us to expand to a second location north of the river, but we can't do this without you.
But First: Our Story
Originally inspired by an "Arrested Development" marathon, Bananarchy also pays tribute to the longstanding bananarchist movement, taking a banana stand against the evils of cakeism, the pastryarchy, and the Ice Cream Echelon. We serve revolutionary desserts: a healthier alternative to the mainstream, rich in potassium, vitamin C, and vitamin B-6, and which can be made vegan. We strive to source our bananas ethically and compost our banana peels.
When we started, we were both 21 years old and had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. Now, six years later, we have served thousands and thousands of frozen bananas to the people of Austin, have catered for some really fantastic businesses and people, and have been honored to participate in some of our favorite Austin events, including Fun Fun Fun Fest and KGSR's Blues on the Green. We have a following of many incredible and kind people that make our job worth doing, and have also enjoyed some great press along the way.
You might have seen us:
We dreamt of creating a new and delicious dessert. We tested and developed for months: freezing, slicing, melting, concocting, crushing, topping, tasting, etc. We didn't just want to make a frozen banana; we wanted to make the best dessert that we had ever tasted.
Why open another banana stand?
Our current banana stand has served us well, but the people have demanded more Bananarchy, and more Bananarchy is what we want to give to them! A new stand will allow us to:
Expand the movement. We love our south of the river location, but it is time that we expand our peels to cover more of the Austin area. A second location would allow us to be closer to some of our customers, who travel long distances to see us, as well as enable us to reach new people.
Provide a more mobile venue for city events. We love to cater events throughout the city, but it is currently very difficult to move our weathered stand. Having another location that is easier to move will enable us to participate in Austin events. Can you imagine eating a frozen banana while listening to your favorite band perform live? So can we.
More space = more bananas. We need more prep space to continue expanding our catering events. We also want to experiment with new menu options (including new vegan options), but we simply do not have enough space.
Where will the money go?
Our first choice is to purchase an empty truck ourselves and then use the Kickstarter funds to outfit it for our specific needs. Here is the breakdown:
MATERIALS - Approx. $7179
Electrical components - approx. $599
Plumbing - approx. $820
Exterior modifications - approx. $3200
Interior construction - approx. $600
Equipment - approx. $1610
Dishes, containers, small supplies - approx. $350
PERMITS - approx. $510
LABOR - approx. $6000
ASSOC. COSTS - approx. $2160
TAXES - approx. $1201
All rewards include sales tax in the reward pledge if applicable.
GRAND TOTAL: $17,050
In the unlikely event that we find an already-outfitted truck or trailer that meets our specific needs, we are open to purchasing it. (In this scenario, we would still need to alter the outside, as well as purchase specific equipment for the inside.) The end budget would be close to the same (after we contribute about $5000 ourselves that we would otherwise spend on buying the truck). If you would like more budget information for this scenario, please contact us!
As always, we love you all. Thank you for anything you can give, and for sharing.
Risks and challenges
The good news is that Bananarchy already has a 6 year-old, veteran frozen banana stand to offer a great business role model for the new, little sister stand.
Any new business venture, though, is inherently a risk. To make sure that there is enough awareness and forward motion to sustain a second location, we are budgeting some additional funds (outside of the Kickstarter funds) for advertising. We are highly motivated to do everything we can to ensure the success of the second location, since our livelihoods depend on it!
Thank you and welcome to the cause.
