I am excited to announce that I am making a full-length studio album! After several years of unintended hiatus, I am ready to jump back in the saddle. Life is a surprising, messy and beautiful adventure, and I come to the plate with a renewed vigor and a strong belief that there is hope and life to be fought for in our numbered days on this earth. This is what I want to encapsulate in this record, and I am excited to partner with amazing group of people to help make it a reality.
This Summer I will be working with an epic production team in New York called Mason Jar Music. They have been a part of creating music with some of my friends and artistic heroes (Liz Vice, Josh Garrels, Laura Gibson, Feist, Fleet Foxes, Chris Thile, Andrew Bird). This is seriously a dream for me, as I have shaped much of my own music and musical journey off these artists and the work Mason Jar has poured into their sound.
What started out as a run of the mill circumstantial hiatus with band members getting married, children being born, moving, and careers kicking off; turned into a much longer lapse after an unexpected turn of events. By the end of 2016 I had just gotten the swing of a better work-life balance in my Arts and Worship Director role, I started grad school, and I finally had everything lined up to relaunch my music by the new year. All that changed with a sudden onset of headaches that got increasingly worse very rapidly. Within a matter of days, I went from a routine Dr’s appointment, to being sent to the ER to remove a large deadly mass found in the center of my brain. Everything changed, recovery was slow and the experience was traumatic - but more than anything else I had a new value for life having almost lost it. After two years of recovery and regrouping, I am ready to try this again; this time with more meaning and life behind my music. The song above is an example. What was originally written for others who needed hope, became an anthem for my own. The need for community in the midst of drowning and the communal refusal to let anyone be lost in the undertow.
THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN:
Something that is unique and beautiful about music, is that it is impossible to create in isolation. There is always a community surrounding it; whether it is a team of musicians, writers, engineers, production team, or listeners – the ebbs and flows of sound are made for mutual participation. Many of you have been with me on this journey for years and have not only helped support my music along the way, but ultimately you helped shape me into the artist that I am today. I am wildly sentimental and am overwhelmed with gratitude for the family that surrounds my creative journey.
I invite you to take this next step with me. I have a lot of life that has been freshly fought for, hope that I cannot claim as self-sourced, and a desire to not go this alone. After years of wrestling with these songs and creating new music out of pain and resilience, this is album Is not mine, its ours – and ultimately for the ears of people we may never meet. Join me as we make this album a reality together!
FAMILY REUNION SESSIONS EP
To create creative momentum and to kick off this upcoming season, I gathered members of the original Family band and captured a handful of songs that I will be releasing for over the next couple months. We put together some family band favorites (like the video above) and even crafted a few B-sides for the memories and good times. Its something we all can look forward to together in the coming months!
The total album cost will be $20,000. Here is the cost breakdown below:
$15,000 - will cover all recording costs for the full-length album (pre-production, studio time, mixing, mastering, paying musicians, etc)
$5,000 - will cover cd duplication, digital release, PR, artwork, and taxes
100% of the funding will go toward this album, its production, and release. You won’t see a lot of fancy extras like shirts, vinyls, and merch in this campaign – but you will see a whole lot of music. I want to best allocate my time and our shared resources toward the making of this album. If we exceed the goal, then I have fun possibilities on the horizon like music videos, vinyl production, and merch options – but until then, we will tackle one dream at a time.
Risks and challenges
Kickstarters are an all-or-nothing campaign. We have only till May 18th to meet our goal of $20,000 so spread the word! NONE of the funding goes through unless the full amount of $20,000 is raised. The amount can exceed the minimum, which would allow for some stretch goals, but the money NEVER leaves your bank account if it’s under.
Recording is not cheap. With studio time, producer fees, musician compensation, mixing, mastering, design, and physical CDs; it adds up fast. Making a full-length album versus my former projects, it means the cost goes up per song to account for the increased number of hours put in.
As is the case with any creative endeavor, there are sure to be unexpected hiccups along the way. I have taken some generalized guesses as to release timeline and production completion. I will send out updates on the progress as time goes on, but grace here is appreciated.
