A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
What is PocketStand™?
PocketStand™ is an accessory that lets you play your Nintendo Switch while charging on-the-go.
I love my new Nintendo Switch, but it has two moderately annoying design flaws. The flimsy kickstand is one problem. The second, more serious problem is that the charging port is on the bottom of the device, making it impossible to charge your Nintendo Switch and play at the same time.
The charging port is blocked when you use the kickstand.
How Does PocketStand™ Help?
PocketStand™ is a tiny accessory that solves both problems at once. It makes for a better stand and lifts the switch up away from the table so that the charging cord can fit into the port on the bottom of the Nintendo Switch.
Just slide PocketStand™ onto your portable battery charger and put the Nintendo Switch into place. You'll need to provide your own battery charger and cable, and PocketStand™ will slide on to that.
The PocketStand™ holds your Nintendo Switch up so a charging cable can reach the port on the bottom. It also makes for a great play stand!
PocketStand™ allows you to play and charge your Nintendo Switch at the same time. It does its job and looks awesome while doing it.
We will make sure you’re covered by making PocketStand™ models for all of the popular makes and models of candy-bar battery packs available.
Since several battery packs are similar in shape and size, we’ll do our best to make PocketStand™ models fit multiple battery packs.
How Big is PocketStand™?
PocketStand™ is so small it even fits in the mini pocket of your jeans.
PocketStand™ will tuck away anywhere so it's always handy when you need it. Truly an everyday carry item for any Nintendo Switch fan.
Prototyping and testing PocketStand™
Over the last two weeks since we’ve had our Nintendo Switch, we’ve made several prototypes and tested it out in action. We’ve tried it out at three events and two restaurants and have received overwhelmingly great response.
The board gamers at last weekend’s UnPub conference in Baltimore, kids at the NoVA Maker Faire, and members at the Baltimore Node Makerspace all loved it. It truly solves the two biggest problems with the Nintendo Switch, all for a low price and smallest form factor of any stand on the market.
We’re laser-cutting these from 1/4” acrylic on the 80 watt laser cutter at the Baltimore Node Makerspace. The material is thick enough to be durable and strong enough to hold up your precious new console while playing on-the-go.
Since we’re using a laser cutter and not injection molds, we can modify the design easily as needed.
Tell Me More...
We also noticed that since PocketStand™ allows for such a great viewing angle for the Nintendo Switch, we were using it even when the battery was full. To use PocketStand™ without a battery charger as the base, you need a connector piece to give it more rigidity. I'll be offering this Conector Bar as an add-on option.
Risks and challenges
We’ll be able to produce these in house, and are eager to get started. This isn’t my first rodeo. I’ve ran 6 Kickstarter campaigns before, and do a great job at communicating, fulfilling orders quickly, and making people happy. I sell a lot of products online, and have fulfillment and production worked out already. All I need is sizes for more battery packs, and customers ;)
The largest concern I have with this project is the different types and shapes of battery packs out there. I'll do my best to get measurements from as many of them as I can. I'll focus on the top 20 Best Sellers on Amazon. It's simple to adjust the CAD drawing for the laser cutter, and the overall shape should stay the same.
I'm confident I'll be able to produce these, and fulfill orders quickly and efficiently.
When the campaign is over, I'll send out surveys asking you which battery charger you have, so I'll be sure to ship you the right PocketStand™ version for your battery. I'll also provide a list of the ones on Amazon that it works with, so if you don't have one yet, you'll know which one to order.
