Kuzushi Seasons Strategy Game

$3,512

We're Gobico Games and Kuzushi Seasons will be our fourth published game. It's an expanded version of Kuzushi, our best-selling crowd pleaser that we self-published earlier this year.

It's pronounced "coo-zoo-she"

Based on iconic seasonal flowers found in Japan, Kuzushi Seasons pits 2, 3 or 4 players against each other in a unique game of positional control. Simple rules lead to beautiful complexities in this abstract area control tile placement card game. It's smart, fun, approachable and addictive.

  • Pocket size 2in box turns into a 2ft board
  • Build the board as you play
  • 2, 3 or 4 Players
  • 20-30 Minutes
  • 80 Cards
  • 4 Different iconic seasonal flowers of Japan
  • 3 Different unit types
  • Play free-for-all or 2v2

Design for the sturdy 2in box:

How to Play

Card placement and area control is all resolved orthogonally to other cards. So up, down, left and right only. Players try to control more of the board through influence from the base cards they play on each turn. Then they check up, down, left and right of the base they place to see what player (if any) has a majority of base cards around it. If no one has more bases than anyone else around it, that square is uncontrolled, and any flag there is returned to its owner, which they can again either as a base or a flag as required.

This makes for a dynamic board that gets built out into a square as play continues (6x6 for 2 players, 7x7 for 3 players, or 8x8 for 4 players). Once the boundaries are established, play continues until all the board is filled. The winner is the player who has the most cards of their color on the board. If there's a tie, the player with the largest "island" of their color cards touching is the winner.

More Players for More Fun

While 2 player play feels like a highly-portable abstract strategy game like Go or Othello, adding a 3rd or 4th player opens up more social and strategic elements. Adding more players makes you want to make deals, chase the leader, dabble in betrayal and other tactics that make game even more fun without having to learn new rules or change the setup.

Rules

Start the game:

The first player places a city card with their color face-up. Split the rest of the cards by color, each player should have 19 2-sided cards. Starting with the 2nd player, take turns placing cards to build and fill a board:

  • 2 players build a 6x6 grid
  • 3 players build a 7x7 grid
  • 4 players build an 8x8 grid

On your turn:

1. Place a base card orthogonally adjacent to any other card (of any color) OR flip over one of your flag cards to make it a base card.

2. Place flag cards to mark any orthogonal spaces you control adjacent to your new base. A space is controlled by whichever player has the most adjacent bases. If no player has a majority, any flag on that space is returned to its owner's deck (they may use it again later).

Once a board dimension is established (eg 6 wide), no cards may be placed outside that edge.

The game ends when the board is completely filled with cards or a player runs out of cards.

To win, fill the board with more cards of your color or be the first player to play all of your cards.

Your game may end in a tie and we think that's OK. If you want to break a tie, the player with the most connected cards of their color (orthogonally, of course) be declared the winner.

Reviews

We will have a few pre-production versions of Kuzushi Seasons available for reviewers (contact us if you're interested). Meantime, our original 2 player game of Kuzushi got a few reviews recently:

"Kuzushi is a sublimely simple abstract with the sort of minimalism that will really appeal to some players, myself definitely included. It’s a perfectly portioned helping for two, providing a few minutes of quick strategy. Considering its price point, form factor, and portability, I think Kuzushi can easily fit into anyone’s collection (and pocket), and will add plenty of game opportunities for those who appreciate its accessible design." — Andrew Fisher for Gameosity

"Kuzushi is one of the best pocket games I have played. It would make a great gateway abstract to introduce people to the genre, who may be interested in abstract games, but don’t want to get into ones that have lots of rules or piece movement variations like Chess or Hive. Though let me say, even if you are into abstracts (like I am) that Kuzushi is still worth being added to your collection, as it is quick, very portable, and a great price."Ryan Sanders for The Inquisitive Meeple

"Kuzushi is a pleasantly peculiar example of smart design decisions. A true pocket-sized abstract strategy game is hard to come by (sorry, Hive) and Kuzushi is a lovely thing to pull out for those in-between times. If you enjoy abstract strategy games (or, like me, have an ongoing fascination with the very small) Kuzushi is a fun treat to add to your library."Kurt Refling for Meeple Mountain

"Just wanted to hit you up and say how much I love your game! ... I played it with my dad (who beat me his first two games) and I truly believe that this is an instant classic among such legends as chess or checkers." — Trent F

"It's a great game -- I love it!" -- Dave's Mom

What Makes it Different?

Every aspect of the game's design is purposeful.

  • Great balance between players. The "first player advantage" found in most turn-based games has been reduced through the game's design, and was tested by human and computer players like a zillion times.
  • Kuzushi Seasons is simple to play but difficult to master. We've spent a lot of time getting a classic board game feel -- the more you put into it the more you get out of it.
  • The visual design is simple, iconic, and easy on the eyes. The colors and images are all very accessible for players with visual impairment or color blindness.
  • It's super portable -- there's definitely space for it in your collection. But this isn't just for size. The cards are easy to hold, easy to remove or flip, and have a low impact on the environment.

What to Expect

We deliver quality products that we're proud to stand behind. We're running this project on Kickstarter because we hope to get enough funding to place a big order, get a deeper discount, and get some profit to grow as a company.

Bonus!

We're including a free collectible pin with each copy of Kuzushi Seasons! So if you got the "One Please" reward, you get 1 pin. If you chose the "6 Pack" reward you'll get half a dozen of these shiny trinkets in your shipment. They're 1.25" small, cute, look great on a backpack and promote our game! It's a win-win-win-win!

Risks and challenges

We work with MPC to print and pack the individual game boxes. We have ordered from them before and everything has gone well. They've always delivered on time, but there could always be a risk of production delays in a project like this, especially with larger orders. We're a family business and we'll be shipping to our backers from our home. While we've done shipping runs in the past, there is a small risk that we may have shipping delays if we get overwhelmed.

In short, the largest risks relate to volume. To reduce this risk, we've over-estimated all ship times and also have contingency plans to ensure we come as close as possible to our delivery date estimates.
