It’s another beautiful Saturday morning, 8:07 AM January 2018, and a ballistic missile is inbound to Hawaii. Ryan Watanabe, a Japanese American born and raised in the islands, receives the warning while working at a hotel in downtown Waikiki. He rushes to locate his family, stubborn mother Michi Watanabe and his younger quiet sister Jazmine, to lead them to a bunker at the base of Diamond Head in the 20 minutes before touchdown.
BALLISTIC captures the emotions of the missile crisis as it were on the ground, pitting a local boy’s need for survival and love for his family against an island erupting into despair.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT - ZACK HARRIS
The core of this story comes from my relationship with my Mother. During the 2018 false missile alert, we were serving students breakfast together at the local community college. When we received the text, we at first were in disbelief. Given the international context at the time however we soon came to accept a plausible truth and quickly took precautionary measures.
BALLISTIC explores the inseparable relationship between a Mother and Son, pitting a small local family against the chaos of an island community fighting to survive. I chose to make this realistic fiction in order to explore the extremes of human nature. The film is shot in experimental first person Point-of-View (POV) to connect audiences to emotions on the ground first hand, experiencing through the eyes of our protagonist. Film is an amazingly entertaining medium that can encourage discussion of very serious topics. In this way I found this story so compelling, as I wanted to go beyond the phenomenon to better understand the sentimental significance of individuals and families following the alert.
As a mixed-race Japanese Caucasian American (or commonly referred as "hapa" in the islands), it was absolutely essential to include Asian and Multiracial talent on screen. I am truly blessed to have grown up in the melting pot that is Hawai'i. I wanted BALLISTIC to reflect not only authentic communities in the aloha state but also shine a spotlight on the stories often forgotten on a national scale; those of minority families.
I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to share this story so heavily focused around a single, Asian mother. So much of my journey is woven in this film; I'm honestly stoked as I know this independent short is only the beginning.
WHAT WE'RE ASKING FOR
$20,000 is the bare minimum we need to break-even and finish this film.
Our initial $15K will cover the deferred costs of production including payroll for actors, compensation for crew, and what's owed for our production insurance.
The next $5K will cover our post production including color correcting, sound design, ADR (voice over recording), visual effects as well as composer or music rights, and basic festival entry.
Additional funds will help this film to be shared with a larger international audience. This includes additional entries to festivals, potential travel fees, marketing expenses, paying back our craft service team, and so much more!
