About this project
BALENTES - The Feature Documentary A passionate Sardinian anthropologist returns to the island paradise of her childhood uncovering a sinister conspiracy of exploitation, toxic waste and human suffering.
BALENTES is a provocative documentary - part exposé, part mystery and part showdown - seeking accountability for the ruthless exploitation of Sardinia’s rich resources, natural beauty and social traditions.
Using a host narrator format, BALENTES is an intimate film, creating a meaningful bond that engages the audience in the issues of corporate greed and exploitation, environmental contamination and the turmoil of social restructuring in response to economic pressures. This film visually speaks to the beauty of Sardinia against the ugliness of corporate greed.
The story is captured from the perspective of the director and host-narrator: Lisa Camillo. Born of a Sardinian mother and Australian father, Lisa Camillo moved to Australia where she spent 14 years working in Aboriginal communities as an anthropologist and as a filmmaker.
Sardinia, a large Italian island off the Mediterranean Sea, has become a tale of two realities. Outside the high-end luxury resorts accessible only to the world’s elite, Sardinia is being driven to poverty and ill health of its resident population.
Plagued by unemployment and illnesses attributed solely to environmental contamination, large areas of Sardinia have been reduced to wasteland.
Sardinia is in crisis - environmental, economic and social crises and its population are diminishing at an alarming rate.
BALENTES: the film takes its name from the Sardinian word meaning ‘man of worth’ – one who strives for social justice, defending the weak against oppression.

Risks and challenges
The risks are low for BALENTES because we’ve shot two thirds of the film, we have incredible editors in both Italy and Australia working to complete the film and a host of internationally recognised and awarded people ready to work once we reach our goal.
The biggest challenge will be ensuring that the money raised is effectively managed so that we can deliver the best possible film. The money we are asking for is modest considering the costs we have already incurred and met without backer support.
We need to exceed our set target, this is the bare minimum! Our goal is the make all the money we raise go as far as possible.
Once we complete the shoot we will immediately move into post production: editing the finished film and delivering something worthy of international festival recognition.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
