Ganymede, a moon of Jupiter is a giant ocean covered in an ice crust where scientists believe life could exist. To visit and explore this extreme environment, new advanced technology will be required. Ganymede represents the future of technology needed to explore unknown and hazardous environments while the design for the brand comes from the pioneering exploration technology created in the past. Ganymede watches pay homage to the past while looking towards the future.
As a long time watch enthusiast I wanted to share my take on what a watch could be inspired by vintage technology. Ganymede watches is an independent watch brand based in GA, USA. The Series 01 is our first wrist watch. The first 125 Kickstarter Backers will receive a special limited numbered edition (number will be etched on to the case-back).
Special thank you to those who saw the vision and put time and energy into spreading the word, contributing to our success!
I wanted to combine two core ideas in the creation of the Series 01: a tribute to technology and how it has advanced our lives throughout history, and the concept of how time is measured and experienced.
The technological inspiration for this watch comes from a variety of influences ranging from the digital watches from the 1980’s made famous by Seiko and Casio to different cutting edge technologies from different eras, specifically steam engines, vintage submarines, and spacecraft. I wanted to pay homage to the human spirit that made these sequential technological advancements in the world possible by combining these influences into a timepiece that shows a vision of the future as it was envisioned in the past.
I wanted the Series 01 to utilize existing mechanical watch movements, but show time in a way not typically found in wrist watches. The Series 01 shows time only with the hour hand with a fairly coarse resolution: only reading the time with the hour hand with the time subdivided by half hours. As society has progressed and evolved to today’s high tempo world with minute by minute deadlines and stresses the Series 01 is a reminder for the wearer to take things a little slower and enjoy the moment and time that they are experiencing with design cues taken from eras long past where information and life moved a bit slower.
The vintage technology that inspires this brand was designed to exacting specifications and made to survive the harshest of environments while functioning with precision and accuracy. I wanted our watch to embody these characteristics not only aesthetically but also functionally. So each component was chosen not only for its looks but also for its ability to survive tough environments while accurately telling the time.
For the Series 01, the specific inspiration for the case and window comes from vintage diving helmets also known as copper hats and the pod shaped style of old submarines.
Movement: For this watch I chose to use the NH35A Movement by Seiko for it’s durability and long life. The NH35A provides a 41 hour power reserve with a Côtes de Genève decorated rotor and has an accuracy of -20 ~ +40 seconds per day with hacking (second hand stop device when setting time). It automatically winds while you wear it or can also be hand wound using the crown.
Case: Like the vintage technology that inspired this watch I wanted each watch to be durable and robust to the environment. I decided to use a material that would be durable and robust, so I decided to use 316L stainless steel with a variety of finishes: Bronze PVD, Rose Gold PVD, plain Stainless Steel, and Black PVD. For this Kickstarter the Bronze PVD is available.
Deployant Buckle: I went with a deployant buckle for added ease in taking the watch on and off.
Strap: I’m using premium leather for the strap and have it accented nicely with cross stitching. Also available are a canvas and rubber option. See image in the Case section for strap color options. In the future we plan to offer rubber/silicone straps.
Water Resistance: Finding inspiration in the ruggedness and robustness of the vintage machines that inspired this watch I wanted the watch to survive the unknown as well. This watch comes with a 100m water resistance rating and a screw down crown to allow you to take it anywhere on you adventures.
Sapphire Glass: I have an anti-reflective sapphire glass face and back giving the watch high scratch resistance and durability. A feature typically found in high end watches double the price, but I wanted to have the best visibility for the dial and the case back.
Reading the time: I wanted to capture and show time in a unique way typically not found in other watches. To read the time, the special four pointed colored hand corresponds to the color of the text on the dial. The following illustrations and video show how to read the time:
For the Kickstarter one color option is available: Bronze PVD. If successful we will offer plain Stainless Steel, Rose Gold PVD, and Black PVD in the future.

I worked with a company with years of experience in the watch industry to produce the prototypes shown in Bronze PVD and Rose Gold PVD below. We have all the tooling and technical drawings made and are ready for production.
Production Plan and Timeline
The timeline for the entire project is shown below. If everything goes according to plan I hope to have the watches to the customers by November of 2019.
The production company I have partnered with has years of experience in the watch industry and have rigorous quality control measures in place to bring you the best product possible.
- Complete functional and cosmetic check including a 100% leak test
- Supplier development process to avoid excessive defects in IQC and to avoid late deliveries
- They conduct a continuous improvement program
Watches come with a limited 2 year warranty covering any manufacturing defects. This warranty is void if the watch has been damaged by accident, negligence, unauthorized service, or other factors not due to defects in material or workmanship.
Why I need funding
With help from the production company I have completed all the technical drawings and tooling required for production. I have already received two working prototypes. I need funding to help pay for the production run of the watch. If funding is successful I hope to continue making unique watches into the future.
Ganymede watches was founded by me, Bala Radharamanan, in 2018. I have been fascinated with wrist watches since I was a child. With a background in engineering, my interest for technology combined with my passion for watches has allowed me to explore unique and different ways to design timepieces. I hope that with the release of the Series 01 that I can share my passion for watches with you.

Risks and challenges
As with any new product there are always risks. I have teamed up with a watch production company with over twenty years of experience in producing watches. Design of the watches is complete and two prototypes have already been produced. Everything is ready for manufacturing. The largest risk to this project is the possibility of production and shipping delays. The schedule already has some buffer to accommodate for this and the experience of the production company gives me confidence in delivering the product on time.
I will keep all the backers informed of the schedule and if there are any delays or issues.
It is my goal to deliver the best product possible and I will be completely transparent throughout the process.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
