A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
We have been creating original designs for independent watch brands for over 7 years, and now we debut our own. We believe original ideas make the best watches, especially in a market today with one too many recycled designs. That is why we created BADGER. Our approach to design is to tinker with ideas that have never been considered. With creativity at the core of what we do, we combine watchmaking with precision engineering to create exceptional timepieces for your wrist.
Our first watch is a hallmark of our vision - we created a mechanical sports watch unlike any other in both form and function. Innovative materials are used to damp vibrations that affect timekeeping accuracy, and the styling of the watch seamlessly integrates these components into the aesthetic.
The Rugged SP (short for sport) is designed in a unique shape called a tonneau. This is essentially an elongated case that is extremely challenging to design, but when executed perfectly, offers a wrist presence unlike any other. After 18 months and more than 20 prototypes, we came out with a watch that looks and feels extraordinary.
Under the custom cut octagonal sapphire crystal, the faceted hour indexes are applied concentrically to offer a more symmetrical time reading experience than traditional rectangular dials. On the remaining dial space, a three-strut polycarbonate buffer damp out vibrations while offering outstanding depth and an intriguing dial asymmetry.
Automatic watches require no batteries, relying on your wrist movement to wind up. Refined over a century, the technicality of these movements are an art as much as science. Nonetheless, knocks and vibrations from daily wear affect the accuracy of even the best mechanical watches. So, we did something about it.
The RUGGED SP is engineered to damp out environmental vibrations dealt to its movement. A corrugated structure made of polycarbonate is used to protect the movement; the same material is used to create a 3-strut buffer to keep out micro-shocks from the dial. Both elements are boldly displayed under the watch crystals, and the styling continues to the outside of the case in the form of dampers on each side.
The retro-futuristically styled case comes in three parts, all made from Marine Grade 316L Stainless Steel. The curated positioning of hand-applied brushed and polished textures bring out the beauty of the case from every angle, and the contrasted finishing is boldly elevated by matte polycarbonate case flanks.
The crown is custom made with detailing that is in harmony with the corrugated aesthetic on the front and back of the watch. The watchcase is held in place from top to bottom using evenly spaced nut and bolt hardware to ensure a robust construction and water resistance of 5ATM. Despite the numerous components, the entire watch is only 12.15mm thick, and is 40mm wide without the crown.
The RUGGED SP comes in 6 specially designed variants. The black or midnight navy dial colour, is seamlessly aligned with the shock resistant polycarbonate components at the sides and back. All variants come in silver, gunmetal and black case colours, the latter 2 applied by PVD.
Our vision to make a revolutionary watch, will not be complete without substance. That is why we work with the best manufacturing partners around the world to assemble the RUGGED SP.
A custom cut octagonal sapphire crystal is used on the top, and a hardened mineral crystal is used on the case-back exhibition. Sapphire glass is known for its extreme hardness, with a scratch resistance so high that only diamonds can scratch it. To achieve such extraordinary mechanical properties, the tough fabrication process comprises crystallization at extremely high temperatures and a sophisticated molding process. Finally, a high precision laser is used to cut the octagonal shape that fits the same shaped watch bezel.
Polyurethane is known for its resistance to chemical and physical degradation, compared to the more commonly used silicone and natural rubber straps. The polyurethane strap used on the RUGGED SP was tested in a tropical marine environment for 60 days, and proved to be seaworthy. The corrugated underside of our Polyurethane strap is designed to allow skin breathability.
The Miyota 6T28 automatic movement drives the RUGGED SP. At only 8 3/4''', the robust movement delivers 40 hours of timekeeping and is powered by the movement of your hand.
While our Polyurethane straps are highly functional and sleek, we have gotten preliminary feedback that straight-cut Italian leather straps could go really nicely with our design, topped with double deployment buckles.
Samples are on the way to us, and we will post updates asap, but here are the stretch goals in a nutshell:
Stretch Goal S$100K - 1 x additional Italian leather straps (choose from tan, black or midnight blue)
Stretch Goal S$150K - 1 x double deployment clasp

A note from your watchmaker -
Right from the beginning, I knew as a watch industry professional, that this was an ambitious project. Arriving at this point - just completing the manufacturable design and creating this campaign, would not have been possible without the warm support from old friends, new friends and of course my family. Your encouragement matters.

Risks and challenges
With any project that involves manufacturing, there is the risk of production delays. However, Leroy Xavier Zhong, the creator of BADGER Watches, has over 7 years of experience managing watch production with commercial watch brands.
We have selected some of the best manufacturing partners we have ever worked with, for this project - our partnership has churned out more than 100 SKUs and 40,000 watches in just the last 5 years. The delivery timeline is inclusive of lead-time buffers, nonetheless, we will be completely transparent with any unforeseen delays.
