Wait, do you know what sound badgers make? Yeah, we neither. Anyway, Hi and nice to meet you. We are the team behind Badgerboard and we would like to introduce you to the coolest LoRa® development board on the market - Badgerboard. Badgers are not your usual animals of the woods, they have a keen sense of smell and this project just smells of awesomeness!

Why should anyone care that you are messing around with yet another IoT Thingie. Well, we are simply making things more affordable while not losing anything on design and usability. Electronic devices are awesome, the Internet is awesome. There can be no Internet without electronic devices. It's the 21st century - thus no device can exist without the Internet.

The Badgerboard is an Arduino compatible LoRaWAN™ development kit, that can be easily extended to a prototype or even a small batch product. We have a battery charger and an antenna connector on board. Building prototypes on Badgerboard - that is exactly what we have been doing for the last 6 months.
Is it open-source hardware?
Yes, it is. Why? Because we love LoRaWAN™ and we want to share it with everyone!
There are many more protocols/radios like Bluetooth Low Energy, ANT+, different IEEE 802.15.4 based protocols like 6LoWPAN and ZigBee. All of these are familiar to us, because we are already including some of these technologies in our existing projects (www.nasys.no). So we are not introducing LoRaWAN™ (The protocol running on top of the LoRa® radio) just to be the cool kids on the block. We have serious test data and development history to back it up.
Depending on the conditions of the surrounding environment the radio waves can reach from 1km to 3km in the urban area and up to 10+ km in the rural. This can be done while powering your device on a small battery like the one you have in your watch.
This is just the tip of the iceberg though. The best property of using a device like a Badgerboard is the LoRaWAN™. This is the LoRa Alliance™ standardized protocol that is specifically designed to be run on the LoRa® radios. This includes security mechanisms (cryptography) straight out of the box. Data transportation and radio parameters are all handled by the LoRaWAN™ software. This means that it is compatible with the other devices/gateways/networks. Thus you do not have to design any software in order to make your data move. You can concentrate on your application.

Details of the communication module
The communication is powered by widely used Microchip LoRaWAN module. We are offering two flavours of the module. RN2483-I/RM101 for the 433/868 frequency bands and RN2903-I/RM095 for the 915 MHz band and its sub-bands. The LoRaWAN stack is already part of the module and all needed libraries for LoRa functionality are included.
What you can do with Badgerboard?
You probably wonder now, this is all great, but what can I really do with Badgerboard? Well, this tiny LoRaWAN™ node enables you to start creating real-life IoT applications today. The only limitation is your imagination.
Here are some examples, which we find are having huge potential to create a smarter planet and a better quality of life.
- Water meter remote reading was one of the first use cases we started working on with Badgerboard. With aging water systems and energy prices, the main issue for consumers is registering water consumption data manually. Badgerboard attached to your water meters will provide a detailed view of when and how much water is being used. What's the cool thing about having an intelligent water meter? You never have to register your water consumption data at the end of the month again. You can just continue chilling on your couch.
- Along with water meter remote reading, you can monitor and manage anything around your home — including electricity and gas meter readings, temperature, humidity or any movement.
- Tracking anything with Badgerboard along with additional sensors can be a valuable theft prevention around you. How and what you track with Badgerboard is really up to you. From motorcycles and equipments to valuable assets - anything attached to Badgerboard will send immediate notification when it detects suspicious movement.
- Agriculture is one of the main sectors around many countries. Using Badgerboard in agriculture, could be an irreplaceable component providing timely information about soils and crops so that farmers can take the right steps at the right time to extract the best from their holdings. Furthermore, the Badgerboard could be a part of a complete health monitoring system for livestock in which sensors in ear tag constantly monitor livestock temperature, movement and other vital signs.

In 2011 we started our journey in Norway to prevent the most common industrial occupation illness - Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome(HAVS), a secondary form of Raynaud’s syndrome.
Fast forward and we are in 2016. During the years IoT has grown and developed rapidly. Billions of “smart” objects are already connected to each other and to us. It has the potential to impact some of the biggest problems and challenges in the world.
Our company has grown from one to 30 employees. In Tallinn, Estonia we have a development team consisting of designers, programmers, electronics and mechatronics engineers, product developers - all inspired to create everyday technology to change the world.
A couple of months ago we decided to bring the low power wide area network called LoRaWAN™ to Estonia. As LoRaWAN™ was a fairly new technology, we were able to open Estonia’s first LoRaWAN™ network NORAnet.
After this everything happened fast. We needed to test our ideas and validate theories which lead to our first LoRaWAN™ development board. We created the Badgerboard so everybody could afford to test different LoRaWAN™ applications without the need to buy expensive ready-to-use products.
Within a couple of months, the Badgerboard has already become an irreplaceable component of the prototyping process. With the help of the Badgerboard you could create life-changing IoT solutions. Joining Kickstarter is a kick for us to start the mass production of Badgerboard!
Risks and challenges
For us, the Badgerboard is already 6 months old. During this time we have set up numerous examples for the pilots all over Estonia - from deep freeze chambers to sewage storages. The boards have also been tested by external people like students to assure that people not familiar with Badgerboard can handle it just as well. The board is completely Arduino compatible, that includes tested and verified libraries for LoRaWAN™ communication. The biggest challenge we see is the lead time for various components like SMD electronics, batteries and antennas. We have assigned these tasks to a separate field expert to assure the right price, quality and arrival. The best thing about our risks and challenges is that we take care of them directly. With in-house SMD assembly we know what we need and how we assemble the boards. The production ready facility also includes the packaging, prints, metal and plastic tools.
Our aim has always been to cover the entire product development process. From prototype to the final product, from design to production, nothing is strange to us. The unfamiliar territory is postage. Anything concerning that is simply a matter of great planning and communication.
