About this project
..back in 1997 whilst working in the middle-east, i travelled with a group of friends to uganda, in order to see the dwindling population of mountain gorillas in the southern bwindi impenetrable forest. at the time there were only around 600 of these magnificent beings left - 300 in bwindi and a further 300 in the virunga mountains on the border of uganda, rwanda and the democratic republic of congo.
now nearly 20 years later, the global population of gorilla beringei beringei has increased to an estimated 880 individuals, but they are still critically endangered.
those 20 years have also led me to being a self-employed graphic designer, based in belgium with a 1 person company called f9. during the first year of f9, bad duck was born, and with him being described as an animal version of myself (he's a foul mouthed duck with a strong sarcastic streak) he's since become my full-on alter ego. f9 now operates under the trading name bad duck.
the duck and i have been looking at producing screen printed t-shirts and art prints with minimalist designs for some time, having built up a reasonable back catalogue of work. through a series of unrelated projects and some serendipitous stories on the web i came back to a set of animal designs which included the gorilla, elephant and rhinoceros - all three suffering from various degrees of endangerment. and so the choice was made.
the aim of producing these t-shirts is first and foremost to raise awareness for the plight of these and all endangered species. kickstarter rules prohibit raising money directly for charitable causes, but should the duck and i get funded for this project, once all rewards are fulfilled and the project has ended, we will use a portion of the proceeds from working stock and future sales of these designs to donate to appropriate wildlife conservation groups. we'll keep you updated on the specifics as they develop.
the design of the three animals are simple and minimalist; clean lines depicting the awesome natural beauty of these wonderful creatures. each design incorporates the animal’s latin name (specific to certain sub-species) and also their status on the endangered list.
- mountain gorilla .. gorilla beringei beringei .. critically endangered
- white rhinoceros .. ceratotherium simum .. near threatened
- african elephant .. loxodonta africana .. vulnerable
the status is set smaller but in a contrast, warning colour - it’s an important message, but we didn’t want to be too brash and loud about it.
each animal design will be set on a single colour t-shirt to match the original, except for the gorilla - finding a nice green t-shirt that will allow the black design to show clearly has been troublesome, so we’ve chosen a silver grey t-shirt in honour of the awesomeness of the silver back. you can see how these will look below.
we’re also doing a high quality a1 sized art print for higher level rewards depicting the original designs in their original colours. there will additionally be a set of 5” x 8” art cards, and finally every backer of €5 and above will get a set of high resolution wallpapers of the designs.
we are planning on sourcing t-shirts from continental clothing co. and using their earth positive range, which are 100% organic cotton. these carry labels for carbon reduction, fair wear trade and global organic textile standards. their ep01 model is a classic unisex 4oz/155g jersey cotton and is available in sizes xs to 5xl. further information and a sizing guide can be found here.
if for some reason we are unable to source sufficient quantity of a given colour we’ll find a suitable alternative that is of equal quality and just as ecologically friendly.
the designs will be hand screen printed, using water based discharge inks, by memory screen in bath, england. this is a new partnership for me but i have seen their work and the printing will be just as awesome as the design! i’m looking forward to working with these guys to bring these t-shirts to life.
the above images are screen rendered examples: the exact colours, size and positioning of final design may vary
similar to the t-shirts, the art prints and art cards will be screen printed by hand, by white duck (!?!?) who are also based in bath, england. the art prints will be large a1 pieces (841mm x 594mm or 23.4” x 33.1” for all the ex-colonials out there) printed on 270gsm mohawk superfine acid-free archival paper. these will form part of the higher rewards and they are going to be wicked.
the art card sets will comprise the 3 designs, hand screen printed to 5” x 8” (125mm x 200mm) on the same mohawk superfine archival stock, which will be just as awesome, but slightly more portable.
again, working with white duck is a new partnership for this project - i’ve wanted to work with these guys for some time and i’m excited to get these art prints done along with the t-shirts. and let’s face it.. bad duck by white duck!
every backer of €5 and above will get a set of high resolution wallpapers of the three designs plus a special "i am bad duck" wallpaper.
if you're reading this, you got this far, so thank you. or you skipped to the bottom, in which case read this next bit as it's important! increasing human populations and activity are having a devastating effect on all sorts of species. putting a spotlight on this plight is becoming increasingly important for me personally, hopefully is important for you too and it should be important to everyone. as already mentioned, in keeping with kickstarter policy this campaign isn't designed to directly raise funds for conservation charities, but to raise awareness. that said, if successful and once the campaign is over and all rewards fulfilled, a portion of profits from future stock of these designs will be donated to worthy conservation groups. if all goes really, really well, there are other designs i have that i would like to get done and still more ideas rattling around inside bad duck's head that would be dedicated to same cause of raising awareness for endangered wildlife.
so for this project to succeed in the above, it needs to get funded. to achieve that goal i need your help. not just to be a backer if you can, but also to spread the word. tell your friends, tell your family. tell your friends and family to tell their friends and their families. post it on facebook. tweet it. follow @badduck09, like my facebook page, my instagram.
and if you can't be a backer, please still do all of the above. or even one of the above. you'll have my extreme gratitude, you may earn yourself a little kudos, but more than that, together we may just make a little difference to the wonderful, awesome, magnificent creatures we share this planet with. and you might just get a wicked t-shirt out of it too.
Risks and challenges
assuming a successful campaign and getting funded, the biggest issue will be fulfilment. the estimated delivery date is an estimate, and there are a host of variables that can affect this. once and if funded we'll send out a questionnaire to gather sizing and design information. we'll need this back from everyone so that we can order the correct number of t-shirts in the correct sizes. only then can the printing begin.
the same applies for the art prints, but only with regards to the designs. no size issues there.
once everything is printed it needs to be shipped from the uk to me here in bruges for packing and posting out. if by some miracle we get way more backers than expected or hoped for, we'll manage that 'problem'.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
