About

What is Fallen?

Fallen is a 22 page, full colour issue that will be part of an ongoing series. Fallen's first print will be standard American sized comic format on high quality paper.  Fallen will blend the genres of mystery, thriller and fantasy by creating a thrilling mythological detective story. The story takes place in the vibrant, synth-pop filled era of the 1980's in the loud, crowded streets of New York City. Created and written by myself, and art done by Henry Ponciano ( Alterna Comics Tinsel Town, The Devil Within, Seven Legions)

Who will Like Fallen?

If you like any of these things, you're going to love Fallen;

80's Pop Culture - Fallen is inspired by and infused with a lot of the 80's classics from music,  movies and style.

Mythology - Doesn't matter if you're a fan of Greek, Norse or any other mythology, Fallen is going to touch on it all.

Crime Thriller - If you're intrigued by stories of crime, murder and mystery. It's like if a mash up of John Wick and Clash of the Titans.

Fallen is inspired by neo-noire stories like Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049 and fantasy stories like Fables and The Wolf Among Us.

So what's the story? Here's a little Teaser;

Over a millennia ago, gods spanning from many different ancient religions were cast down to Earth from their ethereal realms in an event they called The Descent. Cut off from many their divine powers and their godly kin, they walked the world as immortals. The Greek, Norse , Shinto, and Aztec gods maintained a tenuous alliance for many years before descending into conflict. Eventually a ceasefire was reached and rules were set in place to prevent another conflict. One of the primary rules was that the gods could no longer directly influence the mortal world but many found a workaround. Several gods chose wards, a human that they bestowed with vigor, immortality so that the ward could do their bidding in the world without drawing attention to the gods.

Flash forward to 1986’s New York City, the divine clans of the gods have become crime families controlling the lawless underworld. When Zeus is murdered at the hands of a mysterious killer. Casper Clay, Zeus’ ward and ancient soldier turned private detective must find the answers. Who killed Zeus and how did they kill a god? Casper will have to navigate those same lawless underworlds he was once part of but this time without the support of the Olympian family behind him. As he gets closer to the truth, he learns that there may be more at stake than finding justice for Zeus, the realms of man and god may hang in the balance.

The Team

Fallen #1 is a lean operation consisting of just two people.

Matt: Creator and Writer of Fallen. Matt has been working on the concept for the story for over 2 years. It was originally developed for a comic format and then  considered making it a novel. As Matt continued writing, the imagery that he wanted to convey would only be given justice in the colourful pages of a comic. In his off time, Matt plays D&D and co-hosts a podcast called Nerdium.

Henry: Henry is a talented and professional artist based out of the Philippines. He is a published Graphic Novel Artist on books like Children's Vampire Hunting Brigade volume 1&2, Alterna Comics Tinsel Town, The Devil Within, Seven Legions and various contributions on anthologies. Toben:  Toben Racicot writes and letters comics. He’s worked on Beastlands The Wild Cosmos, Thorn Squadron, Menagerie, and Rumble Kings. Together with his wife, Alaire Racicot they created Crown & Anchor, the fantasy sci-fi pirate adventure. He also runs multiple Dungeons & Dragons campaigns and continues the hunt in Bloodborne, and is taking parenting lessons from Kratos as he plays God of War (2018). He’s also working on a PhD in Role Playing Games and Adaptation Theory at the University of Waterloo. To see more of his work visit: artstation.com/letterdrone

Budget

This time around there's no fancy pie-chart graphical breakdown of the budget, it'd look like a coin toss. Since the original launch, I've went in pocket to have more pages completed and I'll take the marketing costs. The campaign is strictly to complete the production of Issue #1. Here's the breakdown;

1) Art - $1710

2) Printing/Shipping (limited first print) - $333

If the campaign raises any extra over the goal, it will go to funds for issue #2 and possible stretch rewards.

Timelines

Here is the projected timeline for the project;

  • Kickstarter Campaign: July 9th- August 7th
  • Kickstarter funds received: August 21st
  • Artwork completed: Mid-October
  • Book manufacturing and freight: November
  • Shipping of rewards: Early December

Risks and challenges

This is a relaunch of my first Kickstarter and very first comic book, so there was a lot to learn. I've done my homework though and with research and speaking with experienced creators and industry professionals I hope to have minimized any issues. The script is 100% complete and the artwork is over 25% completed. My artist is eagerly awaiting his funds to finish up. This is a project of passion so any short comings in my estimated budget will come from personal funds to ensure everyone gets the rewards they are entitled to.
