THE AVIAN REVOLUTION is a live-action short film written by Yasmina Cadiz and inspired by the work of spoken-word poet Gabriella Garcia Medina (one of our inspired young collaborators).
The story takes place in the year 2040. War has devastated the landscape leaving survivors with no choice but to migrate to a civilian safety zone largely divided by class and race.
Fueled and supported by the government, medical testing masked as "preventative medical infusions" are mandatorily given to undocumented workers entering the safety zone.
Travel outside is limited to a small group of indigenous tribeswomen called Transporters. Their tribe is fiercely protected by Dawson, a figure of gladiatorial strength and our main character.
Tensions run high as viable vaccinations reserved for the wealthiest of citizens run low forcing the government to turn to a gang of militants who claim to have a unique creature with the ability to cure all disease.
When an elder tribeswoman falls ill, Dawson risks everything to seek help from a mysterious group of new arrivals known as "shape shifters," who have come in search of their missing leader, AMA. Together they must merge their individual strengths and talents to save their forebears and empower the disenfranchised to unite and demand their equal rights.
THE BACKSTORY ON THIS FILM PROJECT I thought it may be worth making a second short film to work out some of the ideas I have for my feature film so, I submitted THE AVIAN REVOLUTION for the 2010 AFI Directing Workshop for Women but was unfortunately rejected. I decided to turn rejection into motivation by mobilizing a core group of collaborators and produce the short film anyway--only with a few extras:
1) Launch a website: http://www.Back2OneProject.com to help document the process of the making of the short film, THE AVIAN REVOLUTION. 2) Create an opportunity for teenage filmmakers to learn from me by creating a "Shadow the Director" project. 3) Invite industry pros and mentors to contribute to the Back 2 One Film Project podcast on iTunes. THE CHALLENGE I'm going to direct the script (THE AVIAN REVOLUTION) that I submitted to the AFI Directing Workshop for Women (DWW). I'm going to adhere to the AFI DWW production guidelines which means I'll have to shoot my film within a five-day period and spend no more than 30 days editing, from camera wrap to picture lock.
We've raised $7,000 outside of Kickstarter and hope to raise the remaining $18,000 with your help. We plan on screening THE AVIAN REVOLUTION on the same day as the AFI DWW participants screen their films, which is in less than six months.
HOW YOUR DONATION WILL BE USED: All of the money raised through Kickstarter will go directly towards covering production and post-production costs. These costs include talent, insurance, locations, equipment rentals, and so much more.
If our short film makes a profit, Inner City Filmmakers of Los Angeles receives support. We want to help make a difference in the lives of young filmmakers by helping shine a light on non-profit organizations that support talented young filmmakers at such a critical time in their lives. We will direct 50 percent of of all profits the film receives to support Inner City Filmmakers of Los Angeles.
HOW THIS PLEDGE THING WORKS: Choose a pledge amount/award level that's comfortable for you. If you have an Amazon account, it's super easy to make you pledge. Here's the clincher, if I don't reach my goal amount before the pledge period ends, I don't get a penny and you don't get charged the amount of your pledge. It's all or nothing. So please help by spreading the word and linking to this Kickstarter project page. We'd be eternally grateful.
PERSONAL NOTE: Never give up on your dreams. Look for support. Learn as much as you can, prepare and then just go for it.
