Carolina, our designer, has studied for years the cultural-aesthetic figures of Italian design and the great humanistic tradition of Italy at the faculty of design of Genoa. Her Italian cultural background provided her an early passion for Italian fashion designers, from the trailblazing giants who built the great fashion empires, with their unmethodical and emotional character, to the independents who march to the beats of their own drums and represent tomorrow’s innovators.
From this combination of Italian tradition and contemporary propulsion, the concept of Bacàn design arose with an environmentally friendly approach in an attempt of conciliating “la bella figura” with the challenges of the future.
When we started this project our long term goal was to reduce the environmental impact of our production process. Since this is not something you can achieve from a day to the other, we also meant to find a way to leave an immediate footprint. That's when our partnerships with NGOs that have been helping the planet for decades kicked in. Every different model of our new collection is linked to a different environmental campaign ran by one of our partners.
Given the long term nature of the agreement with our partners, no funds raised from this campaign will be directly donated to any charity.
Our business model consists of the manufacture and sale of highly stylish watches, without charging the luxury mark-up. By skipping the traditional channels of distribution and making improvements of efficiency, we are able to re-invest part of our profits in the creation of a sustainable supply chain. The first steps we are going to move in order to reduce the environmental impact of our watch are going to be the use of high-quality materials and the requirement of certificates of social and environmental sustainability of our suppliers.

Before being colleagues, we are friends. We are a team of students from Genoa (Italy) who share common values and interests: design, care for the environment, politics, internet.
The idea of the value proposition of our campaign was born in the library of the university of economics of our city. We were discussing about the political responses to the threats posed by global warming, and we all agreed that we don’t believe to the lies of those who claim that climate change is an invention in order to raise their electoral consensus. Therefore, we tried to find out how to conjugate our business with this important issue.
Our answer? Bacàn Square, the watch that saves the planet.
Risks and challenges
The most difficult aspect that we faced when have started to think at this Kickstarter project was the lack of crowd founding knowledge, for this we spent several months to study and invest time in research and skills to find the right way to succeed. Everything was studied carefully because for our brand this opportunity is an ‘in or out ‘ for our future.
Then a great challenge we have had was to create a product with an exceptional design and different values compared to other brands because as you know, a project related to the fashion industry, where there is so much competition, requires a great effort to be able to create something unique.
In fact, we developed a unique case, designed by us and that was not reliable in the watch industry.
We have spent almost a year thinking and building this project. All the people involved had previous experience in design products and business studies and we are fully trained to carry out this project and deliver the watches on time.
In the case of positive, we will have to make sure everything goes according to plan to meet the promised deadlines. Projects often have troubles when facing the production process and deadlines for shipment but we will manage these aspects.
