About this project
In the artist's own words, "The book is about man merging with machine. I think that, even though that’s a part of our natural evolutionary process, it will also be part of our undoing. The book spans about a 2000 year period. I take it from 2000 years ago and then go forward. These are my personal views on what happened... how that shapes what’s happening now... and how that may shape what will happen in the future.”
Jeffery works alone. He is solely responsible for the initial planning, the studio photography, and the extensive sculpting and painting (both traditional and digital) that his process requires. However, as a first-time-ever experiment, Jeffery has created a mini-series of three collaborative images as unique rewards for this Kickstarter campaign.
Baby Tattoo has published two books by photographer Allan Amato. The first, Temple of Art, was a companion book to Allan's documentary of the same name funded right here on Kickstarter. Subsequently, Allan created the book SLIP: Naked In Your Own Words, which was also funded on Kickstarter. It would be fair to say that Allan was instrumental in laying the foundation for Baby Tattoo's Kickstarter-centric enthusiasm for project-based community building. As fate would have it, Allan happened to have been inspired in the early days of his career by a book titled VISIONS FROM WITHIN THE MECHANISM: THE INDUSTRIAL SURREALISM OF JEFFERY SCOTT (1019) published by Baby Tattoo Books. Since Allan was already collaborating behind-the-scenes on EXISTENCE WITHIN THE MECHANISM, it seemed fitting to invite him to contribute to the project rewards as well. And thus, a Jeffery Scott / Allan Amato mini-series of reward prints was born.
Baby Tattoo publishes high quality books by popular contemporary artists. The company's founder, Bob Self, is the Ringmaster of the Baby Tattoo Carnival of Astounding Art - a mysterious traveling showcase of unusual creative wonders. This is Baby Tattoo's sixth Kickstarter campaign.
$50 Print Trio Add-On
Backers at any level are invited to increase their pledge by $50 to receive a trio of signed and numbered 11"x17" art prints. Simply add $50 to any of the listed pledge amounts, and we'll include all three large prints with your reward. You will be able to confirm that you added funds for the additional prints when we send the backer survey after the campaign's conclusion.
New "Art Of The Mechanism" Reward...
Jeffery Scott is predominantly known as a digital artist and photographer, but he is an accomplished traditional sculptor as well (some of his licensed character works are legendary). For EXISTENCE WITHIN THE MECHANISM, Jeffery hand-sculpted and custom-constructed this one-of-a-kind miniature robot to be composited into his finished imagery. The 13" mixed-media model crafted from resin, polysculpt, metal, and styrene is being offered as a top-tier reward along with a 16"x20" high-gloss, float-mounted metal print featuring the robot. The limited edition print is signed and numbered. This reward also includes a unique "Contributor To The Mechanism" credit in the EXISTENCE WITHIN THE MECHANISM book.
AN IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING CONTENT: This project is intended for mature audiences. It contains artistic nudity and creative depictions of potentially shocking situations. The images shown here have been altered in some instances to obscure potentially disturbing material. The images in the book, postcards and prints will not be altered in this way and will showcase the art as the artist intended.
*All pledge levels that include a physical EXISTENCE WITHIN THE MECHANISM book offer a single name acknowledgment as part of the reward. In order for Baby Tattoo to fulfill this component of the reward, each backer must complete an online questionnaire indicating the name they would like printed. The questionnaire will be sent electronically after the conclusion of the campaign. Backers who do not complete the questionnaire by the indicated cutoff date will not receive an acknowledgement.
A NOTE REGARDING SHIPPING COSTS: Shipping is expensive. The cost of moving items around the world (and sometimes just across town) is perpetually on the rise. Some backers of our various projects have commented about their frustration with high shipping rates. Please be aware that we are frustrated too. We do not make a profit from shipping. We send almost all rewards via the US Postal Service (including international orders), and we put a lot of time and care into protecting books and other items with sturdy, protective packaging. Believe it or not, it almost always costs us more to pack and ship a package than the amount we charge for shipping. We often subsidize packing/shipping costs at a loss. Out of respect for backers who are willing to pay the high price of shipping in the course of supporting our projects, we always strive to deliver rewards with meticulous attention to detail. We love that you love what we do, and we are sincerely grateful to have earned your support.
Risks and challenges
All of the imagery for the project is complete, and the design and layout process is well under way. There is no risk that EXISTENCE WITHIN THE MECHANISM will not be completed, but there is always a chance that it will be (slightly) delayed. Estimating and maintaining the intended production schedule has been a challenge on every project. But we get the job done. Trust us!
