Have a question?
Beyond Science Fiction book is just stunning! I'm so glad that I have it in my library (I'll have it forever). Thanks so much for all the amazing work you all did to bring this book to life!
Books arrived. The Whelan book seems to be in good condition, but the "Beauties and Beasts" book had many pages glued together with ink, which tore off the page when the book was open. I'm afraid I cannot consider the second book to be in acceptable condition. Please contact me regarding a replacement book in acceptable condition.
Books are beautiful and very much worth the wait! Thank you for making such a wonderful collection!
I just received my books. They are fantastic - I am so pleased. Thank you!
Book arrived! Looks beautiful. Worth the wait.
Love the book!! Amazing!
Was way cool to meet up with the guys.
Thank you Bob & Rudy, it was a pleasure meeting you guys in Tinley Park, Il. Book worth the wait and looking forward to Olivia’s book. Hope the rest of your trip was safe.
Damn you are driving through my town as I am leaving town. LOL
There's an info-packed update coming your way VERY soon, with lots of answers and some fun surprises too. Please make sure to read the entire thing thoroughly when it drops, as it will cover a lot of ground.
Baby Tattoo Books
Will we see an update this week regarding the books clearing customs and an ETA on shipping?
The book is finished(!!!), as you saw in the latest project update, and should be on its way to the Port of Los Angeles soon. We'll keep you updated when we have a real ETA from our freight forwarder!
Hi Ali Kelly,
We received and reviewed the plotters. There were a few issues with the spot varnish layer. The problems have been resolved and the book is being printed right now. As mentioned in my comment below, I am about to post a project update.
Hi Shawn King,
Yes... the book is going to come out. I understand your skepticism though! I'm about to post a detailed update, but the nutshell is that it's being printed right now.
Baby Tattoo Books
Is this book going to come out or what?
Hello, per your comment on March 28, did you receive the plotters already and have a date set?
You can change your shipping address any time until the book ships by logging into BackerKit and updating your info there. Feel free to DM us if you need any help with that!
How can I change my physical address for shipping? I've moved since the survey was sent out :)
Hey there Sasha!
We do our best to keep y'all in the loop on these things, so definitely feel free to ask if you have any other questions like Ali's. In the meantime, we'll keep you posted via Kickstarter Updates when there's news to tell! :)
Thank you for the update - I was just wondering about the physical book. It has been a slow process but I'm sure it's worth it! Thank you for all the hard work - I'm sure it's been frustrating on your end as well.
The factory that manufactures the books creates a set of hard copy "plotters" as a final check before running the press. The plotters are in transit to Baby Tattoo HQ today, and once they've been signed off on the factory will give us a firm shipping date. More specifics will be posted in an update, hopefully in the next few days.
Hello, can you give us an update on the physical book release? It's been over 30 days since the release of the digital book. Thank you.
Big thanks to Bob for all the hard work and to Michael for his talent & vision! The digital book looks great. I can't wait to see and hold the physical book - it was worth the wait.
Your name appears in the acknowledgments as M.F.L. Pettersen Family, as you requested in your BackerKit survey.
Hi Erika Wyrdling. If you are having trouble messaging us directly through Kickstarter, you can always email us at email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Hello could not see my name in the list of backers
Thank you, that's awesome - but how do I send you guys a message? I can't find that functionality anywhere on site.
Sure, you can change your cover choice. Send us a message about which cover you'd prefer to switch to and we'll get it taken care of in our records.
Hi, is it possible to change one's cover choice? I know it's really late in the game to ask, but I've fallen in love with the other one over time.
Hi! Just wondering if we have any new updates on book delivery :) Thanks so much!
Hi Steve Raymer,
I completely understand your frustration. Baby Tattoo has a pretty good track record with fulfilling Kickstarter projects (we've launched quite a few of them), but this one turned out to be an unfortunate exception. We certainly fall behind sometimes, and we always make sure to communicate openly about delays... but we have never fallen this far behind, and we have never had to admit so many little missteps (which have added up to an embarrassing year of delays as you correctly point out). No excuses, just sincerest apologies. We will deliver your book, and it will be beautiful.
Baby Tattoo Books
It has been a year since I pledged to back this project. In that time I have backed other artist's kickstarters and received beautiful, signed hardcover books. This book must be the greatest ever produced and so I will wait....but I will have a hard time backing any more of your projects, which I keep getting notices for. Yes, Michael Whelan is a great artist, this kickstarter has been a huge disappointment as far as timeline.
Okay, no worries.
Thanks for the quick reply sir!
The simple explanation of "waiting for proofs" that has been outlined in the project updates is, in fact, an over-simplification. There are a number of variables in play, and I will send you a direct message with the details. The short story is that the ridiculous slowness is a result of Baby Tattoo issues (not printer issues). But all is on track... it's just a very, very slow track.
I'm really curious about the print company you're using...as I've worked in the commercial print/lithography industry for years, and 3 weeks for proofs is...excessive.
They were sent the files (presumably) to their prepress in late October (27th?), and you still don't have proofs just under 3 weeks later? For a 7" x 10" 120pg perfect bound book? Unless they are doing major colour corrections to each piece, then I'm unsure what would take them that long.
Just curious, as I've seen 140pagers make it out for proofs in a week tops, so this seems genuinely excessive unless there is a variable at play I'm unaware of.
Not upset, just super curious.
Also, apropos of nothing, what linescreen are you printing at? 175 or stochastic? (Crosses fingers it's not 150lpi)
Hi, Patty! Thanks so much for your enthusiasm for this project. We're very excited about it too! :)
After attempting to fund several failed projects, I am very excited and encouraged to see all this care going into this one. I love Whelan's art and can't wait to see my book!
I knew it was a vain hope; but thank you for getting back to me!
Hi D'Arcy Bechard,
The size of the book is confined by the fact that it is part of a series (although the book can certainly stand on its own). It's the second volume in the "Baby Tattoo Carnival of Astounding Art" collection that was launched as a sort of encyclopedia of strange fun art. The project itself was most likely inspired by the "Time-Life Mysteries of the Unknown" books that were frequently advertised on television in the late '80s and early '90s. The first book in the proposed set was titled "Beauties Beasts" and featured the work of pinup master Olivia De Berardinis and Hollywood monster maker Jordu Schell. The third book is going to be an overview of the life's work of Disneyland design legend Rolly Crump (that project is on Kickstarter right now at http://RollyMagic.com). The size seemed comfortable and easy to handle, and gave off a kind of "souvenir book" vibe. So, although altering the trim size is not under consideration, we have been thrilled to add pages and to upgrade the quality of the printing for Michael's book.
I always meant to ask but especially giving the ultra high resolution that you're working with, is there any possibility at all of the physical book being perhaps closer to 8.5 by 11? It would drop your resolution only by 10% or so which is probably not even visible to the eyes. But since my eyes are 53 years old now, a slightly larger image would be much more easy to see and appreciate all the details of Mr. Whelan's skills.
I do understand it's a bit late in the process but having read your last update about the resolution of the scans I thought it couldn't hurt to ask. I didn't ask when I first pledged to support the project because it seemed you were much closer to the printing phase and there didn't seem to be a possibility of making any changes at that late date.
Regardless, thank you for undertaking this project. I have been waiting patiently for what, 17 years or so since his last book and anything is better than another 17 years!
So sorry to hear you're having trouble with the file! I just send you a DM that should address your concerns. Thank you for reaching out about this, and please don't hesitate to contact us in the future if you need anything else.
I am trying to contact the creator. I clicked on contact, and all I get is this. How do I?
The font size of the backer list to-be-checked is too small for me to read, and it is not adjustable in size. Using Firefox (55.0.3) on a Mac, this page is not adjustable in font size. Actually, it can be smaller, but it won't enlarge. I saved the pdf, but acrobat says it can't open it. I selected all and copied it to Word. Pasting as unformated text gave just the name of the file. The only other paste option, picture, just gave the Acrobat Giant Red "A." How do I read this to see if my name is correct?
Also, I need to give another address now.
Thanks for the nudge, Scott Richards. Below is a bit of information I posted in the comments tread for our last update...
"We are still adding art (and additional pages) to the book at Michael Whelan's request. We are also experimenting with rearranging some of the layout to better showcase the relative size of some of the paintings. Because the book has not yet gone to the printer, any estimate I make will just be a guess. I really thought this book was going to be complete months ago. The good news is that it's going to be a better book than it would have been months ago. I truly believe that we will have the project to the printer (and the downloadable digital version delivered to backers) by September 30. It usually takes two months to complete proofing and production... which would be the end of November. Transport time from China to our West Coast port is usually about month (including customs clearance)... end of December. Michael has to sign the books, and we have to pick and ship everything. My most realistic guess is that physical books will be arriving in backer's hands at the end of January."
But it is important for me to admit that this is only a guesstimate. The good news is that I have seen a new layout from the designer that has been sent to Michael Whelan for comments and/or approval. I can tell you that the process is very close to completion, but the not-so-good news is that I still don't have a truly concrete answer as to when backers can expect delivery.
As soon as I have a likely-to-be-realistic timeline, I will share it with everyone through a project update. We are definitely much closer to the finish line than we were 5 weeks ago.
Given that the last report was over 5 weeks ago can we get an update on this now please?
Hi Jake Smith,
Unfortunately, it is a mistake that the book was solicited in the September issue of PREVIEWS. This is the first I'm hearing about it, so thank you for the heads-up. It is probably the result of some unintended miscommunication from me to my distributor. The book is getting close to being ready for the printer, but the timeline is still uncertain.
I see that the book has been solicited in the September issue of PREVIEWS. Any chance this means we'll see the book by November or so?
Thank you Carlos Huerta and Mia Kleve,
I have backed several campaigns that you have printed and appreciate that quality work takes time (sometimes more than expected). Thanks for the update and I'm looking forward to receiving my books.
Again wanted to voice our how excited I am for this campaign and the final product. I had the great pleasure of meeting Bob at Comic Con. Thanks for everything.
Hi Peter Dodd,
Your digital book pledge may not have been a lot of money, but we are grateful for the support, and we take our responsibility to you very seriously. The design and file preparation process for this particular project has encountered significant delays (all of which involve changes being made to increase the quality and scope of the finished book). There is no risk that the book won't be finished, but it is an unfortunate reality that the production files are still being completed.
As soon as the book goes to the printer, the digital version will be provided to backers. Not too much longer... I promise.
