Brian Kesinger and Baby Tattoo Books have dreamed up a first in a series Christmas ornament that is being offered on a made-to-order basis here on Kickstarter. But you have to act fast if you want to catch one of these mermaid beauties because we're making them available for 36 hours only!
Like all creative projects, the ornament started as a seemingly simple idea - "Let's make something fun and collectible for the holidays!" This was a few weeks ago in mid November, so we figured there was no way to get something ready for this year... unless we were somehow able to conjure some Christmas magic.
As it turns out, there's powerful magic in collaboration. Watch the project video above to see how sculptor and master automata builder Thomas Kuntz and artist Danni Doll helped turn Brian's Christmas wish into a meticulously handcrafted prototype ornament.
The final bit of magic is that you can commission your own hand-finished version of this collectible keepsake. We will make your ornament in the days ahead and ship it to you anywhere in the world. The actual number of ornaments in the edition and the exact timetable for shipping will be predominantly determined by the number of backers who pledge during this 36 hour campaign. We anticipate an extremely limited edition with shipment taking place in January.
Each ornament is individually cast in resin and finished with a hand painted patina before a miniaturized print of Brian's original painting is affixed to the center. The art is specially coated to help protect it from harsh light and moisture. Each ornament includes a signed certificate of authenticity.
The pledge requirement for each ornament commissioned is $149 with free shipping anywhere in the world.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Risks and challenges
The foundation for this project is already in place. All of the preparatory work is complete. The planning and prototyping phases took place over the past few weeks, and the only step remaining is to craft each individual ornament on a made-to-order basis. We made a few sample ornaments to test the quality of the molds and experiment with painting techniques, so we know exactly what we can deliver. There are literally no risks involved with this project, but a little bit of time and patience will be necessary to allow for each and every ornament to be lovingly made by hand.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
