About

Orphans?! Thieves?! And Other Unlived Lives?!  WHAT IS THIS PROJECT?!

"Orphans, Thieves and Other Unlived Lives" is a new evening-length dance-theater performance work about the role desire plays in Epigenetics (see below!), cast with seven amazing intergenerational performers and three top-notch design collaborators. I am self-producing this show at BASE Experimental Arts & Space in Seattle, WA, November 7th-16th, 2019.

Creative Process:

A few years ago, I stumbled across the fascinating (and loaded) field of research called Epigenetics.  In a nutshell, epigenetics is the study of the modification of gene expression during human experiences.  In order to acclimate to certain conditions, our genes will re-route, re-invent, and re-interpret their role in our bodies: Some turn up loud, some turn down low.  All in service of survival. In service of human and spiritual resilience!

After all our ancestors have been through (war atrocities, disease, addiction, immigration, and famines to name a few), we might think of this DNA-modified-gene expression and inheritance as both as our legacy of trauma, but also of our enduring resiliency!        Martha Graham called this our "Blood Memory."

In the creative process of "Orphans, Thieves..." we invite our own personal histories, our elders and ancestors (those still with us and those who've passed), to create this work, to dig for our own gene expression altered over time and family history. We are asking:

  • What unconscious forces are influencing our day-to-day and larger life choices? Why do we do what we do?
  • What is a forbidden or unforbidden desire? And who decides this?
  • Are our choices taking us further from or closer towards our resiliency?

"Orphans, Thieves and Other Unlived Lives" attempts to reconcile these questions (even if they are impossible to answer) to surface new possibilities. We are ultimately asking for a new perception and understanding of our history.  As we take an honest look at where we come from and who we might really be, we create a meaningful, heart opening, hilarious, and sometimes, a very problematic conversation of "trauma transmission."

THE AMUSE BOUCHE! IMAGES IN THE MAKING:

Fast moving choreographed vignettes of family affections, rejections and bickering alternate with hidden desires and secrets, all moving through a small box of light. A performer shares her satirical stand-up routine about Passover traditions with her Cuban Jewish family; behind her, the dancers enact the image of a loved one visited at final rest. Slapping arms, rhythmic chair rituals, existential cheerleading chants...and a group therapy session that takes a turn for the worse are all contrasted with highly crafted choreography. Although colorful in costumes and characters, generous in heart and humor, this work is not afraid of uncomfortable silences, and the occasional “soft” scream.

The INCREDIBLE Cast and LONGSTANDING Collaborators:

The seven performers are a mötely crue of professional actors, stand up comics, and dancers, colliding their vast trainings, vast age differences and life experiences:

  • Leah Crosby - Dancer
  • Carie Esquenazi - Actor/Comedian
  • Jason Franklin - Actor
  • Gina Malvestuto - Actor
  • Hannah Rae -Dancer
  • Melissa Sanderson -Dancer
  • Maia Veague -Dancer

This distinctive cast allows for layers of insight through generational and historical differences and similarities. The creative process involves writing/exploring our forbidden desires and family histories, improvisation scores that call up intuition, movement meditations and rituals with our ancestors, and a lot of wtf moments.                                               Its as sacred as it is freeing and funny!

The three expert design collaborators in the fields of set, sound and light design, are gracing our General Magic production team. Grant Bowen is helping devise a "revolving room" on wheels, where forbidden desires are played out, some with audience participation! Our professional sound engineer, Bradley Laina is mastering a sound track of gold..as usual. And David Verkade, a master of light, has been part of the General Magic team for nearly 5 years and is tapped into the General Magic aesthetic! We are in GREAT hands! And I need to pay all these amazing performers and designers!

What your money can do!  Your tax deductible! contributions through Kickstarter will help cover many of the major costs required in self-producing an evening length show, let alone 7 performances of it! I need & want to adequately compensate these incredible performers and designers, cover all set design, costume and prop costs, pay for the theater rental, and rehearsal studio rentals. This two-weekend, evening-length, year-long process and production costs a grand total of $15,000.00 to do right. We are asking for do-able initial goal of $5,000.00 to help us build a solid start. Any supplemental pledges to our goal of $5,000 will go towards building the production caliber of of "Orphans, Thieves and Other Unlived Lives.

"Orphans, Thieves and Other Unlived Lives." WHY SHOULD I SUPPORT THIS? (Besides the obvious fact that YOU LOVE OUR SPECIAL FLAVOR OF PNW PERFORMANCE!?

You would be supporting ELEVEN! committed and stellar artists who contribute to the vibrancy of your city! Artists that dig to get to the deeper understandings and shift perspectives with their audiences!  My work, as unconventional as it is, is always aimed at making dance-theater approachable to the masses without pacifying; I make work for everyone!  And I intentionally take my time; this particular process is over a year in the making as the subject matter of Epigenetics is so loaded, timely and relevant in our modern world.  It illuminates how we will need to rely on each other as the world shifts and changes.

"Orphans, Thieves and Other Unlived Lives" is our most researched and choreographically ambitious work that General Magic has endeavored in self-production! Self-production is very challenging...your support makes the challenge aaaall worth it! This project is also unique in that we know it will unite audiences and create community through the performances, quarterly workshops and our creative processes.

ABOUT JESSICA JOBARIS & GENERAL MAGIC:

General Magic collage 2011-2019
General Magic collage 2011-2019

I am a Seattle based choreographer and the director of my dance company General Magic. For the past 20+ years, I have been exploring dance-theater and respectful cross-cultural ritual. My unconventional choreography researches the paradox of pop-culture and ritual, finding a physical language and conversation with our ancestry and agency. General Magic is the fluid group of performing artists who are key collaborators in my performance works. A diverse range of backgrounds, bodies, ages, races and identities facilitate the research and practices of resiliency, absurdity and the sacred.  Dance drives all creative generating, yet we use the mediums of text, sound, comedy, and film to engender multi-disciplinary dance-theater performance works that reflect on multiple world viewpoints. I have lived, worked, and toured nationally and internationally, continuing to call Seattle my home base. To check out more about my work and General Magic, please visit jessicajobaris.com

"But we also learn to live somewhere between the lives we have and the lives we would like.[…] We refer to them as our unlived lives because somewhere we believe that they were open to us; but for some reason — and we might spend a great deal of our lived lives trying to find and give the reason — they were not possible. And what was not possible all too easily becomes the story of our lives. Indeed, our lived lives might become a protracted mourning for, or an endless tantrum about, the lives we were unable to live. But the exemptions we suffer, whether forced or chosen, make us who we are." - Missing Out: In Praise of the Unlived Life" - Adam Phillips

Risks and challenges

We have two grants in the pipelines, but we can't count on those to always pull through. So we are asking for a rather large fund to secure for the performers. We believe as a large cast, and additional support of the designers spreading the word, that we can achieve this campaign goal, as well as fill the audience seats.
