What is the recommended age to use a BabyCrate?
The BabyCrate is tested and certified until your baby reaches 10kg or can pull up independently. Therefore, the BabyCrate can be used from day one until your baby is at least 6-8 months old, which coincides with the end of the most critical time for SIDS. Most parents like to keep the BabyCrate around for storing toys or newborn baby clothes thereafter. We will offer replacement mattress pads, covers and sheets should you choose to buy these new for the next baby or to gift the BabyCrate to the next new parents in your circle.
How do I know that the BabyCrate is safe for my Baby?
The BabyCrate is designed to integrate the guidelines for a Safe Sleep Space by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Additionally, the build quality is certified according to the ASTM International Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Bassinets and Cradles F2194-13 as well as CFR PART 1218—SAFETY STANDARD FOR BASSINETS AND CRADLES.
The natural pine used in the BabyCrate is finished with a low VOC water-based lacquer that is certified according to EN 71:3 and is thus safe for toys as well as fulfilling paragraph 4.1.2. 'Materials and Surfaces' of EN 1130:1996/1 'Cribs and cradles for domestic use' as well as Paragraph 184.108.40.206(1) and 220.127.116.11 (2a) `Lead Content ́ of the Standard ASTM F963-11 `Standard Consumer Safety Specification on Toy Safety,16 CFR 1303:2016 and CPSIA section 101 ́.
Furthermore, all our Textiles are GOTS as well as OEKO-TEX certifed. Our natural caoutchouc is certified by Hohenstein to conform to OEKO-Tex 100 as well as ECO Umweltinstitut Cologne Germany for content fillers.
The BabyCrate is not only safe but also sustainable: the wood used is Forest Stewardship Council-certified.
What our friends had to say about the BabyCrate:
We have been providing BabyCrates to new parents in our circle. Whilst they all appreciated the BabyCrate, we were delighted to realize that we were able to satisfy varying needs of a wide range of lifestyles and priorities.
"My twins are 30 months old now and are more than a handful. With the BabyCrate I was able to easily keep the new baby out of their immediate reach in a safe place."
- Susanna, Mother of three
"I most appreciated the BabyCrate during the day in the living room as it allowed me to keep my baby close without having to worry about falls or suffocation (...)"
- Lena, Mother of Michael
"We avoid artificial substances in our diets and we can feel the health benefits of living a sustainable lifestyle every day. For this reason, we not only strongly appreciated the commitment to natural materials in the BabyCrate but also adored the fact that we were not compelled to celebrate the birth of our child with an unsustainable purchase of a product made from fossil fuels."
- Rothraud, mother of Ben
I got the BabyCrate for my new grandson. It is the perfect sleeping solution for a new baby and such a boon for a new mother. Because the BabyCrate is so stable and portable my daughter can keep her baby near her at night and during the day. It is made with all-natural products so we know that my grandson is getting the best start in life. I wish that BabyCrate had been around when my children were babies – it would have made my life so much easier!
-Mary, Grandmother of one
When we had our first baby we often worried about where to put the baby. The pram was too big and cumbersome to use around the house and the crib quite simply too large and most often in the wrong room. For that reason, our baby spent the first few months often either lying on the sofa, which we later discovered often results in falls and is a very common cause of SIDS or sitting in an armchair or the car seat, which left him in a scrunched up position so we became worried about his posture. When our grandparents told us that they used to put our parents in cupboard drawers as babies we thought this might be a good idea. However, we have no drawer we trust with our baby. We also became aware that Finnish parents had been putting their babies in cardboard boxes and that this had resulted in a substantial reduction in infant mortality there. We chose to make the BabyCrate out of solid wood for durability and easy cleaning.
We wanted something simple, practical, natural and safe.
Because we couldn't find anything on the market we decided to make it ourselves. Our second baby, who arrived early and is therefore somewhat vulnerable, is here we use the BabyCrate all the time. As our toddler is currently on the rampage, we particularly appreciate the safe space the BabyCrate offers and the fact that it is very difficult to topple due to the low centre of gravity.
We started giving away BabyCrates to our friends when they got babies and had some great feedback. For this reason, we thought that other parents would like the BabyCrate, too. We produced an initial trial batch, got it certified for safety and are now bringing it to Kickstarter to introduce it to the world.
So why BabyCrate?
If you are attracted to being able to put your baby in a protected space wherever you go, then the BabyCrate is for you.
If you have toddlers or pets, then the BabyCrate is for you.
If you value simple European design and the idea of a durable and stylish box for your child's possessions from day one, then the BabyCrate is for you.
If you prefer sustainable, natural materials and don't want to celebrate the start of your baby's life by buying a short-lived gadget rather than durable quality, then the BabyCrate is for you.
Risks and challenges
We are not a large corporation. We are everyday, normal people so we really want everybody to be happy with their pledges to BabyCrate. This is why we will strive to treat every backer exactly as we want to be treated, with respect for you and your baby's needs. We promise to communicate openly with our backers and to do our best to make things right should any complication arise.
We have already made a trial run of BabyCrates so we can be sure that the firms we work with are reliable. We have included plenty of time for possible delays in any of the production processes and are confident that we will be able to deliver our BabyCrates on time. Ultimately, the largest risk in our view concerns shipping times as there can be delays when sourcing and shipping worldwide. However, we also know that it is critical that you get your BabyCrate in time for when the baby arrives and so made sure not to underestimate the time required and have added a buffer. Should you need your BabyCrate urgently, we advise you to pledge for the "Need for Speed" reward so that you can obtain a certified BabyCrate from our initial trial batch.
We will move forward with production and shipping as soon as we have reached our goal and we know exactly how many BabyCrates we need in the production run.
We have established great relationships with all our production partners and we are willing to do whatever we can to motivate all our partners to deliver on time. However, we do also recognize that challenges can arise and we will notify our backers as soon as possible should this be the case.
Many countries have particular requirements for Baby products. Although we comply with United States and European Union regulations and labeling requirements we cannot guarantee that this will be the case everywhere in the world. In order to limit this potential risk to you, we pledge to support the import process with documentation and information throughout the world. In the unlikely case this should prove unsuccessful, we will refund your pledge minus our costs should your BabyCrate for whatever reason not be accepted in your home country, once it has been returned to us. We ship from the European Union. We are not responsible for any applicable import charges to your jurisdiction.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
