About this project
It's the final few days we thought, as a final push, we'd share with you the artwork we design for BABE's debut album, 'Volery Flighty'. We're pretty chuffed with this and we hope you like it too :)
Babe is a Scottish/French band created by Gerard Black. Originally from Scotland, he was in a number of synth led bands until by chance, he met french band Francois and the Atlas Mountains. They took him away to France having seen him sing and play live and he became a member of the band writing arrangements and backing vocals for their albums. Along side this Gerard learnt to speak French and wrote his own material which became Babe.
When we were introduced to Babes music, we were blown away by its unique sound and originality. We are extremely excited about the potential of working with such great material in conjunction with visuals, and have designed a project to bring the two together.
In the lead up to the albums release we thought that it would be the perfect opportunity to create a series of short films to build a sense of anticipation around Babe's debut. Our main incentive with this project is to unite artist and filmmaker, creating one harmonious piece of work.
We hope that you are excited about supporting the project and we appreciate any contributions towards it.
Babe’s mixture of haunting and poetic tones is complimented by being able to portray a sense of fun. We want the films to encompass this eclectic soundscape as a whole. With these themes in mind, we aim to create five films that can be watched separately or together to complete one larger sequence.
We plan to shoot the films on 16mm. Recently we have acquired a great amount of 16mm stock and this project seems the most fitting way to use it. What 16mm will bring to the films is a luscious, natural look which is rich in colour.
With a limited cast and crew we hope to raise funds to contribute towards location costs, camera hire, lenses, lighting, props, equipment transport and wardrobe.
We currently have a good team of friends to help out where possible. But the nature of this project requires certain processes and levels of expertise that are difficult to get for free.
Our narrative begins with a body is washed up on the edge of a lake. It is a young man. Unconscious to the physical world he lies still, eyes closed, wheezing shallow breaths. We begin to see his dreams and our character finds himself reliving moments from his past. The memories he sees all take place in conventional domestic environments but have an uncanny quality about them, the people seem oddly absorbed in their actions and objects seem out of place.
A young woman is present in every memory the character recalls. She is seemingly stuck in a moment that requires interaction from another person but her actions are not received. Stood on the periphery of the scenes our character is pulled out of the moment. He observes his absence from the relationship with the young woman until an object triggers a new memory and he is suddenly in a new location.
As these dreams build, he catches up with his most recent memory of a lake where he comes face to face with himself.
To accompany these films we have asked Babe to compose original soundscapes that are created from the albums tracks. Working with existing elements from the album, Babe will rearrange compositions to create a bespoke piece of music that works with the dynamics of the visuals and gives an insight to the content of the album.
Thank you for taking the time to read through our page.
Risks and challenges
As with most projects this one will be tight on time. Including the time it will take in the funding process we wont have long to prep and shoot the films so we will need to get the ball rolling as we raise the money and put time into pre production processes.
When shooting on film we are loosing the flexibility that digital cameras can offer. What we gain is a gorgeous natural feel that anyone will be able to appreciate. Planning will be the key here as we wont be able to check the footage until we have paid for processing. We are confident that with good story boarding, location scouting and lighting checks we will be well prepared before we shout action.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
