Robit Riddle: Storybook Adventures

$13,116

In a world where robots are the only life forms, something nefarious is afoot in Tink Town: every pet robit is missing. Inspired by the Choose Your Own Adventure series of books and featuring amazing art from John Ariosa (Mice and Mystics), Robit Riddle takes you on a journey through the eyes of your robot. Tell interesting tales while following along in the storybooks to create an immersive narrative that keeps you guessing.

After 3 years, hundreds of playtests, 15+ major iterations, 10+ conventions Robit Riddle is ready for your support.

Gameplay

The goal of Robit Riddle is to find out what happened to all of the pet robits. Depending on how good of an ending you reach in the storybook you may get much, some, or no information about the missing robits.

Each player chooses a robot. Pick the first leader, who then selects one of the storybooks and starts reading.

As you read the storybook there will be headers, footers, and icons that will signify different actions to take. Headers mean that new cards/encounters come into play. Footers let you know the actions you can or must take. Other icons let you know if you gain any items or friends along the way.

Three different types of encounters

There are other choices along the way, like "do you want to take path A or B?" The juicy parts happen when you have encounters. The leader selects an action to take against the encounter, then tell a story about how their robot performs the action. The story can be as creative or as simple as you want to make it. The story is important because the leader will probably need help. The leader then rolls the dice to see the outcome.

Most of the time the leader's roll will not be enough. In that case, all of the other characters in the group can help the leader's character by adding to the story. Spending story tokens (the gears) on their story cues, they add to the successes until they overcome the encounter.

After overcoming the encounter you may gain additional help in the form of story cues, allies, items, or even robits.

You continue through the storybook until you reach an ending. You gain points for things you find along the way and for the success or failure of your ending. Add up all the points and see how you did!

For each gear unlocked a piece of black and white artwork will get added to one of the storybooks. This will be newly created pieces from John specifically for the action that is happening in that section of the storybook.

"...the concept is great. Robit Riddle is an old-fashion choose your own adventure game that can be played by just about all ages." -- Christopher Richter Boardgaming For the Win

"Since playing Robit Riddle with my 6 year old son at Origins in June, I have awaited this game with great anticipation. This is a wonderful storytelling game where adults and children can work through a mystery and discuss important decision making strategies and consequences. The rules are straightforward and your decisions early in the game significantly affect the outcome more than a simple choose your own adventure. I highly recommend this game."-- Steve Poelzing Game Designer

"The art for Robit Riddle caught my eye at once. When I heard it was a storytelling game AND a cooperative game, I firmly planted myself in front of the booth until I got to demo it. The game play and art really struck me as something I needed to share with my children. Imagine my disappointment to learn it wasn't for sale yet. Finally the Kickstarter is happening and I couldn't be more excited." -- Thaddeus Papke

You can always add more to your pledge if you just want to support, but if you are interested in doing that the Educator pledge level will help me and schools!

Do you want to donate, but are unsure if the school you want to help is able to accept? We will reach out to the school ourselves and find out. If they are unable we will fall back to one of the many schools that are in need.

Some teachers would like multiple copies so they can bring this into a classroom and make a lesson out of it. Donating multiple copies is easy! For each $30 increment (plus shipping) we will ship another copy to the same location (unless otherwise noted in your survey).

We have many schools that we have already established relationships with, but we are always looking for more. If you represent a school and would like to reach out to us for donations please do!

If you would like multiple copies just multiply your reward level by the number of copies plus shipping (e.g. 2 copies would be $80)

If you would like multiple copies or to do multiple donations, just add the correct amount to your pledge plus shipping (e.g. 1 extra full ($40) copies would be $105 pledge)

We will verify that you are a retailer interested in bringing Robit Riddle to your community!

Please reach out to us if you would like to more than one retailer box!

Robit Riddle is being manufactured in China. From there copies will be sent to our fulfillment partners around the world for distribution to backers. This saves you on shipping and extra taxes. This also means different countries will receive their copies at different times. Since manufacturing is happening in China, Asia and the Pacific will most likely see their copies the soonest followed by US and western Europe then the rest of the world.

For places that shipping is expensive we are offering a retail level reward where we can ship 6 copies to a Friendly Local Game Store. Please try to arrange something with a store near you. If that is not an option, please reach out to us and we will see what we can work out.

Designer, Developer, Publisher: Kevin Craine of Baba Geek Games

Software engineer by day, family man and master tinkerer by night. I love to make things and have my family test them. Most of the time no one gets hurt. Growing up playing games was a way of life that somehow got away from me. When I was re-introduced to board games I realized how I missed some things. This naturally led my creative half to start brainstorming, which led to Baba Geek Games.

After many game ideas and prototypes, Robit Riddle was the first game that I think other people would enjoy. I spent the next three years tweaking and iterating on my design. You can read more about my process on my blog.

Artist: John Ariosa

One of the luckiest things to happen during development was finding John Ariosa, the artist that has brought almost all of the art in Robit Riddle to life.

Video: Kevin Snyder

Kevin is an amazing guy. Very creative and can get complex things done very quickly. It has been a joy to work with him. He is available for motion graphics work and can find out more on his site.

Risks and challenges

I have spent the last 3 years and hundreds of playtests on Robit Riddle trying to make it the best game I can. At this point all the mechanics, art, and graphic design are set. What remains before going to print is finishing the books, editing, and any additional stretch goals that are met.

This will be the first game that Baba Geek Games is publishing. The reason I am self publishing is I really enjoy not just designing, but developing, publishing, and interacting with everyone involved. I have read many things and have spoken with many other publishers so I can have as successful a first title as possible. I want the name of Baba Geek Games to be one of known quality and compassion.

As someone that has backed many Kickstarters myself I have seen the good and the bad. I hope to apply my personal experience so that I can deliver and give the best possible customer service experience that I can.

With that in mind I offer a money back guarantee. You can return your copy of Robit Riddle (opened or unopened) within 1 month of receiving it for a full pledge refund, no questions asked. We'll even pay for return shipping.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
