Stretch Goal

Update from June 22, 2017:

We have a good momentum so why stop?

Let's open source another book, the new edition of Full Stack JavaScript. It's a beginner Node book with good reviews on Amazon. The new stretch goal is another $6,000 to make it 200% of the original goal.

If we reach $200%, then Full Stack JavaScript, 3rd edition will be ALSO WRITTEN OPEN ON GITHUB (free to anyone), and then edited and published as a normal book by Apress Media (paid).

Pledge to reach our stretch goal and make Full Stack JavaScript, 3rd Edition a reality!

Read for free online, learn as I write and influence the topics

Back this campaign for the 2nd updated edition of top-selling ULTIMATE Node.js book to read the book online on GitHub for free, influence and propose topics and learn the modern Node.js stack by reading and watching videos, as well as get acknowledgment, promote your brand and train your engineers.

Get rewards and support Node now or read on for more background...

It’s time to return

It took me a solid year of blood, sweat and tears to write, but in 2014, a highly experienced team of editors at Apress Media and I were finally able to publish Practical Node.js, 1st edition. I was blown away by the response, and the book went on to be a #1 seller on Amazon for the Node.js category.

I wrote Practical Node.js to be as valuable as possible for the longest period possible. Too many books are virtually useless after a few months, so I made sure that my examples were useful to build RESTful APIs, perform test-driven development, implement real-time apps, deploy them and do many other essential practical things anyone who works with Node.js needs to perform.

Nevertheless, a lot has changed in the years since. There are new versions of Node.js, new libraries, and I have a lot more to say about all of these advances. You’ve told me that it’s time for an update and I’m excited about the prospect.

If you thought the 1st edition was good…

Making Practical Node.js current is a worthwhile aim but it’s not enough. It has to blow the 1st edition out of the water. That’s why for the 2nd edition things will be a bit different.

It will still take a no-BS approach, with practical knowledge that developers can use right away to finish their projects. But this time I want to write the book with more transparency. The plan is to write it on GitHub, where you can follow along, comment, give me feedback, and through this collaboration I can ensure that the 2nd edition of Practical Node.js is even better than the first.

Open source, public and free for all

There will still be a beautiful professionally typeset and edited print edition of the book (and you can be in it!) published through Apress Media, and sold through myriads of physical stores all over the world. However this time the draft version of the manuscript will also be available online on GitHub for free. I want to open source this whole endeavor so whoever needs an urgent practical Node.js help can get it just by reading the draft manuscript online.

To achieve this, I need your help. It’s going to take a lot of work, but the results are going to be more than worth it. Give me your support, and I promise I’ll deliver the community a book that you’ll be proud of.

Funding Goal

It took me over one year to write Practical Node (1st edition, 2014 Apress) and 2 years to write React Quickly (2017, Manning). I once calculated how much time I spent writing books in cafes and coffee shops. I had to laugh when I realized that I make less than baristas in those cafes!

This funding goal is on par with a standard tech book advance, but the aim is to judge interest and reward fans of Practical Node.js and my other work.

The minimum funding goal for this campaign is for me to write the 2nd edition of Practical Node.js. If we reach 200% of the goal, I will also write (with the same transparent and open methods) the 3rd edition of Full Stack JavaScript (2016, Apress Media).

If project is NOT funded, then NO ONE WILL GET ANY REWARDS and the books will be most likely not updated, not written and not published.

Reviews

Here's what some Practical Node (2014, Apress) readers saying on Amazon.com:

Or this one:

Okay, just one more from 70+ 5-star reviews:

And this review is not a 5-star one, but it's of the most recent reviews.

Look at the date of the last review from Daniel T.! People still read the book in 2017... three years after the publication in 2014!!! It's definitely time to update the book and give everyone access to Practical Node.js for today’s programming landscape.

People on Twitter were raving about it too:

But that's not all. Some people left me "reviews" on my LinkedIn!

By now you might be curious about my background and why almost everyone has such a positive feedback to my work? Keep reading!

F.A.Q.

  • Q: Can I get a digital copy as a reward? A: The online version of the manuscript will be publicly available for free in Markdown on GitHub. There are a lot of free tool which convert Markdown to PDF. Therefore, there's no need for a digital copy in the rewards. If you would like a final version of the edited digital copy in PDF, Mobi or ePub or a print book, then you'll be able to buy it from the publisher Apress Media.
  • Q: What will be open sourced? The draft manuscript of the book will be open sources on GitHub which mean anyone will be able to access it. The final edited and typeset version of the book will be available for purchase in book stores... (and I'm sure) on Torrents.
  • Q: When are you going to start and finish? A: I will start right after the campaign and finish the work on the GitHub manuscript in about two months. The final print version will take longer.
  • Q: Why I'm not getting anything real for me for the $50 reward? A: The $20 and $50 rewards are for Node supporters who only want to support the project. If you want the book, you can buy it on Amazon later for $20-30 but you would not be part of this movement and you would not get the satisfaction of helping others.
  • Q: I'm a poor student, programmer, engineer at Google, etc. I cannot afford even a $20 reward. How can I help and benefit? A: Spread the word. Tell everyone you know about this Kamgaign. This will get us funded and then you'll enjoy reading the book online while it's being written.
  • Q: Why $20 is not acknowledged on GitHub? A: Imagine having 100s of people listed on GitHub? We want to reserve this only for $50+ supporters. Also, some people want to remain anonymous. Leave your comment below if you think otherwise.
  • Q: Why the video has such a bad lightning? A: My other videos has better lighting and quality especially ones on Node University. I use a different camera for this recording as an experiment. IMHO this about the book... but leave your comment below if you think I should re-record videos.

Next steps

You probably know the campaign drill by now. If you back it and we don’t reach the funding goal, then everyone gets their money back. If you’re interested, please back this campaign right away.

Momentum is so important. When people see other people supporting a campaign, they want to do the same. The campaign is obviously time sensitive. In order to make the 2nd edition of Practical Node.js, with a free online GitHub version for the entire community, the goal has to be reached.

For these reasons, back the campaign now. It took a lot of meeting and emails to convince Apress Media to do this, but now we need to show them your support! You'll get a calm and silent satisfaction and the feel-good after donating to this good cause. Tell ALL YOUR FRIENDS and ask your boss to get the company sponsorship.

NOTE: Avoid postponing backing. The book will not happen, and none of the backers will get anything unless we raise the goal.

It's time for you to pick a reward and support the campaign for and to be a part of what I'M SURE will be the ULTIMATE NODE BOOK, the best and the most complete guide on Node.js!

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk is that the goal won't be reached and people who backed it won't get the rewards they were looking forward to, like the awesome custom coder hoodies! The bulk of the book is written. I just need to find 3-4 weeks of focused time to update everything and for you guys and girls to provide feedback, ideas, and reviews. If the campaign is successful I can ensure that I carve out the necessary time to finish the book before the end of September 2017. Traditional publishing takes a long time, but with the manuscript on GitHub, it'll be a living document. As far I see it, the biggest risk is for the community to not to get this valuable resource.
