About this project
The Kingdom of Orboz is in trouble, and it’s going to take fantastic, amazing, heroic heroes to save it. But in this case, you take what you can get.
Awful Fantasy Adventures is a quick-playing and "self-expanding" cooperative card game. While the game's core components offer an easy-to-learn and fast-pace co-op experience, the included Adventure Packs not only expand the game, but modify the rulebook itself.
The "self-expanding" nature of Awful Fantasy Adventures lets players expand and customize their game at their own pace. Each Adventure Pack contains new cards and new rules stickers to apply to the pages of the rulebook, introducing new powers and new dangers to the game. Play until you've mastered the game, and then crack open an adventure pack for fresh challenges and enticing rewards!
Awful Fantasy Adventures is a lighthearted fantasy themed card game from the creators of Awful Fantasy: The Card Game. We've teamed up again with acclaimed tabletop game designers Adam and Brady Sadler (Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card Game, Street Masters: Rise of the Kingdom) as well as the extremely talented artist Conor Nolan (Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Giants) to create a uniquely absurd cooperative card game so epic that it must be a part of some unfulfilled prophecy yet discovered.
Awful Fantasy Adventures was designed to be very easy to pick up and play with your friends, and you'll have a blast doing it.
Check out some gameplay:
Adventure Packs expand on the game as you play, introducing new threats, powers, special enemies, or even new mechanics! Each Adventure Pack has a unique theme and is designed to be opened and implemented as you play, offering an evolving experience that breaks up the monotony often associated with lighter tabletop games.
Each Adventure Pack contains 15-30 additional cards to add to the game. What could they contain? The contents are a mystery!
Here's a video detailing a little info about the contents of Adventure Packs. Be warned, it will show the contents of an Adventure Pack, so if you don't mind ruining a surprise, then by all means check it out for a little info!
@AwfulFantasy is a comedy fantasy and science fiction social media account guided by Justin Lucas and Mitchell Lucas. Each tweet satirizes or parodies classic tropes and cliches in fantasy and science fiction writing.
Conor Nolan is back and he's ready to make Awful Fantasy Adventures look every bit as awesome as Awful Fantasy: The Card Game.
Check out some of the work he's done for us already for Awful Fantasy Adventures:
In our Kickstarter for Awful Fantasy: The Card Game, we offered a custom D&D 5th edition compatible adventure designed and written by Awful Fantasy called The Dæmon Queen’s Sæcret Tower. It was a popular add-on and we had a blast creating it, so we're doing it again!
Introducing The Dæmon Queen’s Sæcret Tower Pt 2: The Sweet Relæse of Dæth! This new adventure will be available at the Epic Adventure! pledge tier and above. Haven't tried the first one? Fear not! The original Dæmon Queen’s Sæcret Tower will also be included at the Epic Adventure! pledge tier and above!
Here's the story:
You awake in the night, The Dæmon Queen's laugh still echoing in your mind. Sweat is all over your body and your fantasy-themed bedsheets are drenched. The nightmares are getting worse, and the villagers in this small town you now call your home have been acting oddly in the recent months. Is it connected?
You wake up your adventuring party to tell them about your nightmare (they're all staying at your place for a sleepover). As you talk, you realize you all had the exact same dream! You killed Queen Fœtida in your last adventure! Is she somehow terrorizing you from the grave? Is there something about this town in particular that draws the spirit of the Dæmon Queen and strengthens her? Maybe it's the ancient crypt down the street where her body was put to rest? Could be.
Suddenly, there's a commotion in the darkened streets outside. Otherworldy screams mixed with the voices of townsfolk you once knew converge into a bunch of off key nightmarish duets. As you peek through your blinds, you gasp in horror. The townsfolk are mutating into dæmon hybrids, and one particularly nasty mutation has an eye on you. No, wait that's old man Gilliam with the wandering eye. He doesn't see you, yet.
This must be the work of the late Queen Fœtida. You aren't sure how, but you are sure there are answers in the local crypt. You must make your way there and stop her again, or face the Sweet Relæse of Dæth!
If you back at the ALL THINGS AWFUL FANTASY level, you will also get a copy of our first game: Awful Fantasy: The Card Game. This reward is ready to go and will be shipped to you immediately after you fill out your BackerKit survey!
Here's a little about it:
Awful Fantasy: The Card Game is a competitive card game for 2-6 aspiring authors vying for the coveted goal of a finished story.
The game consists of two decks of cards, the awful deck and the fantasy deck, and a set of author cards.
In the game, each player takes on the role of an author and competes to be the first to play all three required fantasy cards for a finished story—a Protagonist card, an Antagonist card, and a Plot card.
To obtain the required fantasy cards to finish their story and win the game, players draw cards from the awful deck. These awful cards may allow you to draw from the fantasy deck, take a card from the discard pile, plagiarize by stealing fantasy cards from opponents, or even destroy an opponent's hard-earned story elements by killing off their Protagonist, poking holes in their Plot, or by de-antagonizing their Antagonist.
We are making Awful Fantasy Adventures because we wanted to make a cooperative game that expands on the concepts, ideas, and characters seen in Awful Fantasy: The Card Game.
Awful Fantasy Adventures will be much larger and more complex than our first game, which means it will have much more art. Our artist Conor is returning, and since he is only one person, it takes a little longer for our art to be completed when compared to other projects that outsource their art to teams of artists.
Because of the volume of art required (and because of the ~5 months needed to manufacture and ship the games), we will need a little bit more time to get the game completed. And that's why the game will be hopefully be shipped by next September (2018).
Once we get funding, we can begin to pay for all the art we need and Conor can get started chipping away at the monstrous workload he has ahead of him. And while he does that, the rest of us can work on making sure the game plays great by the time it's ready to ship!
We are using Ship Naked to ship, just as we have with our first project, Awful Fantasy: The Card Game. The games are sent from Panda Game Manufacturing's location in China to the United States, and then sent from Ship Naked's US hub to their hubs around the world, then to you.
The following is a list of rough estimates for shipping Awful Fantasy Adventures. Keep in mind these are just estimates for a single game of Awful Fantasy Adventures, and do not include extras.
- USA: $5
- Rest of World: $10
- Brazil, Mexico, Russia: $20
Extra copies of Awful Fantasy Adventures can be added in BackerKit after the campaign ends and will not add to your shipping cost.
Awful Fantasy: The Card Game will ship FREE to US backers of the All Things Awful Fantasy! pledge tier. It will ship at a discounted rate of $5 to the rest of the world, collected in BackerKit after the campaign ends.
Risks and challenges
This is our second game and, like the first, it is card-based.
We will be working with the same manufacturing and fulfillment partners as we did with Awful Fantasy: The Card Game. These now established relationships will allow us to focus on the important thing: creating another great game for you.
Estimated Delivery is just that, an estimate. There are a variety of unforeseen circumstances that may move the final shipping date forward or backward. Please take note of this fact as you pledge for your copy of Awful Fantasy Adventures.
