We did it! We'll use any extra we raise to make our sound system even better and get started on the expensive sidewalk seating permit!
Stage Crew Needed
From its humble beginnings in the old Golden Bull spot on 14th Street, Awaken Cafe has been an amazing experiment in community supported business. Now in our second location at the beating heart of Oakland, the cafe whose mission is to Bring People Together and Launch Movements, has come to be and continued to evolve because of the generous support of the community we serve. From time to time, we've extended a hand to the community to ask for money and other resources to help us move to the next level. And with this latest campaign, we're asking for your help to launch another new endeavor in support of our music program and the musicians we hire to play at the cafe: to build a proper stage with new stage risers, upgrades to our sound system, and the addition of stage lighting.
A Blossoming Music Scene
Since putting on our first show on May 1st, we've put on scores of musical and literary events with over 100 participating artists, and paid a combined total of over $5000 in cash and comps directly to the artists. We're now regularly putting on 3-4 nights per week of music and other performances and are beginning to fill a niche for an East Bay medium sized venue for acoustic, folk, indie, jazz and literary events. We'd like your help to take it to the next level.
The Benefits of a Stage
A proper stage with enough room for larger bands and a quality sound system helps us attract popular local and touring acts that draw crowds. Also with the band raised up higher on risers more people can see the show allowing us to accommodate a larger crowd. Successful and well attended evening shows make a big difference for us to be able to pay our staff and bills, which means this is an investment that will help us continue to do what we do well into the future.
The proceeds will be allocated like this:
- $1800 - Additional Sound Equipment
- $1000 - Lighting Design and Equipment
- $1000 - Construction Materials for the Stage Risers
- $600 - Labor for Building the Stage Risers
- $350 - Architectural Plans for the Stage Risers
- $600 - Electrician (Wiring and Relocating Outlets)
- $500 - Cost Overruns and Unforseens
- $650 - Kickstarter & Credit Card Processing Fees
- $6500 - Total
If we're able to get the construction done under budget, don't need the extra money for overruns and unforeseens, or if we raise more than our goal, we'll use that money for:
- Additional and/or higher quality sound equipment.
- Booking and compensating artists.
- Building our audiences through advertising and promotions.
- Or towards an outdoor seating area with a dozen additional tables enclosed with a stylish railing.
*Picking Up vs. Shipping: We invite everyone to help us save shipping costs and pick up their perks in store during business hours. If you are out of the area or just can't make it in, we'll be happy to ship. Stage Unveiling Party and Concert: The date and line up for the Party and Concert is TBA. Once we announce the date and line up, if you are unable to attend you can sub your free ticket(s) for another available ticketed event. Other Perk Terms & Conditions: If the project is successful, we'll need your t-shirt and/or hoodie size right away so we can order the correct sizes and insure we'll have the size you need. Tickets and Guest List: You will not receive actual tickets for events. Advance reservations are required for all events with the exception of the $1000 perk level. Tickets will be held at will-call. You must be 21+ to purchase or consume alcohol. Drink tickets can be used for non alcoholic beverages.
Special thanks to all the artists who contributed to our video and Art Elliot for contributing the soundtrack song "Postcard" recorded live at Awaken Cafe.
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk to our campaign are those that face any construction project: unforeseens, overruns and delays. While we feel we've adequately accounted for any potential cost overrun, if we do encounter one we'll continue to hold live shows with our existing set up and put money aside from the proceeds of those shows until we're able to cover the entire cost of this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Traditionally, small, independent businesses would take out a bank loan or use high interest credit cards to finance expansions needed to survive. The result would be paying large fees to big banks usually headquartered out of state. The burden of all that debt is often why local businesses fail and why big chains survive. Crowdfunding has become a great resource for local businesses to raise money from small contributions from neighbors and community members who want to see our kind of business succeed. Less than a year old, we're still trying to make our business profitable so we can serve downtown Oakland and foster the arts for a long time to come. A stage would be a big help. But it doesn't just support us, we've already put on over 100 artists at the cafe and paid them for their art. We also employee 15 Oakland residents and do business with dozens of local vendors. A stage will help us bring in more people and sell more stuff which means supporting more musicians, performers, Oakland vendors and staff on into the future.
