The Tramways Engineer's Workbook is a standalone game (not a Tramways expansion) Two players and 1 player.
Within the 20-30 minutes it takes to plan your route (for each map-puzzle), draw rail lines and use tickets, writing directly on the pages of the book. Achieve the goal, or erase it all and try again if you fail!
Solve the puzzles, or play against your opponent, and compare your best score with the designer himself!

To do that, you need to impress the board of directors by passing the 42 Challenges, the test that all top executives in the SCTC must pass.
So take your erasable pen and work hard to unseat Mr. Draiv - he can't run everything forever, can he?
If you play the game-book with 2 players, it becomes a competitive game. The winner is the player who best meets the victory conditions stated by the goal icons.
My original idea when I first conceived the Tramways Engineer’s Workbook was to create a portable boardgame that could be played anywhere: in the office, on public transport, or even in bed at night.
The Tramways Engineer’s Workbook is a spiral-bound book of 88 heavy-duty plastic pages. It comes with two erasable pens, each in a different color, so that you can play a game with 2 players.
This is a game is for you, whether you know Tramways or not, because the game teaches you the rules in a gradual way, yet even the first puzzle is challenging to solve.
This is the first of my games to implement this new concept of distillation of complexity and minimization of components. If it is successful, I hope it will be followed by many others!
Setup could not be quicker: 1. Open the book. 2. Pick up a pen. You are now ready to play!
Gameplay is also quick! 1. Read the objectives on the left page. 2. Choose your actions on the right page, and draw them directly on the map with the pen.
You have 6 rounds, and if you have met the objectives before they are over, you can turn the page and take on the next challenge!
As with many of my games, do not be fooled by the easy gameplay. This will challenge you like no other game I have created.
Playing in 2-player mode is a confrontation with a special victory condition that depends on the map.
There are at least 4 unique elements in The Tramways Engineer’s Workbook, each a reason for you to enjoy laying track in Small City:
1. In solo mode, the Workbook is a coherent series of puzzles. In each episode, you are given a map with tickets and action icons, as well as one or more objectives to be achieved in a certain number of rounds. If you succeed at all of the objectives, you can move on to the next episode.
2. In each puzzle there is an additional rule that you have to take into account and integrate with all the other rules. This means you must gradually manage more and more parameters.
3. Varied and new objectives await you on each page. I have carefully calibrated them so that they are of increasing difficulty. But i i’s entirely possible that you can outshine the designer himself! Beat the target scores and send me your best games!
4. In 2-player mode (available on 34 maps), it becomes a competitive game. It is no longer a question of solving a puzzle, but rather of measuring up against your opponent in an interactive and competitive way, all with simply a pair of erasable pens!
1) 1 book of 88 laminated pages
2) Erasable pens and 3) A rules set.
With this campaign, I would love to release a 3D Locomotive. It would be used as a first player marker in the Tramways Engineer's Workbook.
To purchase the add-on, you just need to increase your pledge by $7 for each locomotive you want to add (max 5).
But the good news is that I have increased the game play of Tramways the boardgame with this 3D locomotive: Passengers can be moved faster when they catch the locomotive on the city map!
Please read the Tramways Conductor Manual to know more the rules HERE
You can find the English rules HERE
Each turn, you choose the tickets that have the icons you need to perform the action you want to take.
Performing an action usually requires several icons, and thus several tickets. Use your pen to ✘ the tickets you choose.
At the beginning of the book, there are only 2 actions available to you:
- Build a rail link
- Move a passenger
The more you build and the more you move, the more tickets you need. Unfortunately, you recover only 3 tickets at the end of your turn (simply erase the ✘ from those 3 tickets to start the next round).
The problem is that actions often require 2, 3, 4, or even 5 tickets, so you will have fewer and fewer tickets to work with (and likely fewer actions) as you work through the episode.
From page to page, you will have more and more power, and additional actions at your disposal: build new buildings, upgrade your links, add passengers, gain money….
Eventually, delivering passengers will provide you with special benefits, such as earning you happiness points (the key to victory!), but you will also need to regulate your stress level!
- In 2-player mode, you play with the same rules, but there are now 2 of you on the same map.
- Just like in the solo game, you select tickets with the icons you need for your action. In turn order, you work and build on the same map, but it’s every Engineer for themselves!
You will traverse thirty maps, as if you had played thirty expansions for the same game in a single box, but all of this contained in a portable book!
The solo mode and the 2-player mode are completely different experiences. Each one offers a different kind of replayability, and the book format offers great value in materials. You can simply erase the pen marks with a cloth, and play the maps forever!
The puzzles are difficult enough that you could always improve your performance as a solo player, and try to beat my scores!
A few months ago I launched a big playtesting campaign around the world to get some initial impressions from blind playtesting. A lot of fans helped me classify the puzzles as easy, medium, difficult, and very difficult.
Finally, playing through the Workbook prepares you for playing Tramways, and becoming even better at it!
At the same time we are funding this book, I would also like to reprint the game Tramways, which has been sold out for several months. All stretch goals funded during the first campaign are included.
As a reminder, you can see my campaign for Tramways HERE .
Since 2016, Tramways has been nominated for several awards around the world such as Jogo de anon 2017, Goblin magnifico 2017, -and the Heavy cardboard People's Choice Golden Elephant Award 2016.
We'd love for you to try Tramways before you back the campaign! The game has been implemented on Tabletopia, and you can play for free here:
If you pledge the reward The funder and if you want 3 locomotives, you would pay:
$74 The lover + $15 (shipping costs) + $21 (3 locomotives) = $110
Adding stretch goals is dangerous for a small publishing house like mine. I ran my previous campaigns sticking to the principle of few or no SGs. This prevents me from promising things that are impossible in the time allotted, it controls the production costs, the weight of the box, and therefore the shipping costs, as well. It also minimizes the number of errors. Nobody likes errors: neither the publisher nor the backers! We must remain realistic, even when the campaign gets exciting.
Nevertheless, for this campaign, as we exceed our goals more and more, I plan to add more pages to the book, because this does not increase the production time, and each $5,000 will allow me to add another episode: 2 new pages with a map and a set of tickets. We have now 42 MAPS (instead of 36!): I have offered one map when we reached 1000 backers!
AVStudioGames is a one-man company and my games are not distributed by major distributors. I don't use Kickstarter as a pre-order platform; I use Kickstarter to fund my games.
If you pledge now, you help me to fund the game, which won't exist without your help.
Sampo Sikiö is the graphic designer of Eclipse and Tramways. I like working with S because he is a genius to sump up complexe ideas with one minimalistic icon.
Like our past campaigns for games such as Tramways, the Tramways expansions, and Card City XL, we have respected the delivery time, and in some case, boxes were even delivered earlier than expected. With reasonable and minimalistic SGs, we can avoid delays because we won't increase the production process at the end. The files are mostly ready for the book. The files for the Tramways boardgame are already at the manufacture
The Locomotive Add-on: $0
You can order as many add-ons (the locomotive) as you like with no additional shipping costs to those already stated for the reward you pledged. For example if you pledge the Engineer reward with 2 locomotives, (because you are loco for locos) you would pay:
$24+$5 (SC)+ 2×$7 = $43
Risks and challenges
AVStudioGames has already put a substantial amount of money into the initial illustration and graphic design.
We now need your help to traverse the final route: Producing the game. We have established many contacts in the game manufacturing industry since 2012, which ensures good quality for all the components.
The final files are not yet ready, but all we need is your support to finalize the project.
