On February 11th, 2012, Avant Media celebrated John Cage’s 100th birthday with a day of concerts at the 2012 Avant Music Festival. We're very excited to be releasing the recordings of this fantastic day, to mark John Cage's birthday this fall.
The afternoon saw the masterful pianist Vicky Chow perform the full Sonatas and Interludes. The evening concert featured works from throughout Cage’s career, including a twenty minute performance of the epic Concert for Piano and Orchestra which featured Vicky Chow on piano, the ensemble loadbang, and a number of other instrumentalists and vocalists (Gelsey Bell, Drew Blumberg, Nicole Camacho, and Victor Lowrie) performing the Solos for... in chance determined lighting by Kryssy Wright. In addition to performances of Living Room Music, Nocturne, and Four3, the night included a special duet performance of Ryoanji with Megan Schubert singing, and William Lang on Trombone, over the “raked sand” performed by Randy Gibson.
The entire day of festivities was recorded in exquisite detail by Ben Manley. The quality of the recordings and performances was so high, that we are planning to release a special limited edition CD (200 copies) and digital download of live recordings on September 5th, John Cage’s 100th birthday. The album will be designed by Oscar Henriquez, the creator of all of Avant Media's visual elements. The full track listing will be as follows:
Concert for Piano and Orchestra
Additionally, everyone pledging $25 or more will get a special bonus download track, Music For Marcel Duchamp, played by Randy Gibson, recorded live at the very first John Cage concert series organized by him in Boulder, CO in May, 2000.
John Cage’s music has been an integral part of Avant Media from the beginning, and we’re extremely pleased to be able to make our first release of his music available on his 100th birthday. Your pledge of any amount will help make this a reality. And an added bonus, because Avant Media is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, your donation is tax deductible.
