RaceCapture: Powerful Data in the Palm of Your Hand
RaceCapture is a compact device that supercharges your smart phone with performance data from your car. With RaceCapture, you can get engine stats from OBD-II, precision track mapping from the high-performance GPS module, and measure dynamic forces using the precision 6 axis accelerometer + gyro and much more - all in one simple plug and play package.
Podium: Share and Compare Your Racing Experiences With Friends
RaceCapture works with Podium, a new social network for sharing racing data with friends. With Podium, you can combine video from your smartphone with high quality data from RaceCapture and share it with friends, fans, and followers. You can compare your stats such as lap times, speed, engine data, G-forces and position on the track and get notified when your friends are racing, find out if they get a great lap time, or better yet, notify them when you set the track record!
Using RaceCapture is easy. Connect the RaceCapture device to your OBD-II port, place it on your dash, launch the app and hit the track.
The first time you run the RaceCapture app you’ll go through a quick self-guided setup that configures RaceCapture for your car and your racing preferences.
All the Data, in One Package
RaceCapture streams high performance GPS, CAN/OBD-II and accelerometer+gyro data right into your smartphone over a high speed wireless link - all in a single compact package powered by your OBD-II port.
RaceCapture includes a high performance GPS module supporting 5/10/25/50Hz update rate, blowing away the typical 1Hz update rate found in most smartphones.
Precision Track Mapping
You’ll get precision track mapping and lap timing with the ability to compare different driving lines between laps and calculate accurate laps that approaches the accuracy of official transponder systems.
We use a precision 9 axis device offering 3D accelerometer plus 3D gyro and a 3D magnetic compass. We’ll enable the full 6 axis of accelerometer and gyro and expose one channel of the magnetic compass for heading, providing a 7 channel experience.
Prove You’re the Drift (or Grip) King
This powerful accelerometer provides 3D G-force measurements up to 2G plus a 3D gyro that measures Yaw (oversteer / understeer), Pitch (brake dive / acceleration squat) and Roll (lean in corners). You’ll get tons of dynamic data just from this sensor, bundled right into RaceCapture’s compact enclosure.
Smartphones Are Smart, But Not Perfect
There are a lot of apps available that utilize the smartphone’s internal sensors and accelerometers for tracking driving data, but our experience is they’re insufficient for performance driving data. Not all phones and tablets share the same hardware, and not all have 3D gyros. By including an accelerometer+gyro in RaceCapture you can rely on consistent and accurate high performance data. Plus, there’s just a one-time calibration needed after installation – all you need to do is throw your phone onto your dashboard mount and hit the track!
In 2008 CAN bus for OBD-II became the standard for all road cars and light trucks. Most manufacturers were compliant on the required date, but a few eager OEMs got on board early, with some Ford, GM and Porsche and Mazda models providing support as early as 2005. Compared to the legacy OBD-II protocol, CAN provides the fastest performance with baud rates supporting up to 500K baud and observed OBD-II sample rates up to 200Hz, depending on manufacturer and ECU.
Standard and Extended OBD-II Channels
Out of the box RaceCapture will support querying SAE standard OBD-II channels such as:
- Throttle Position
- Engine Temperature
- Oil Temperature
- Fuel Level
- Ignition Timing
- Manifold Pressure (turbo boost)
- and more
You’ll get even more interesting OEM specific data through the ability to query extended PIDs – an advanced view will let you drop down to the metal and specify low level parameters so you can get extra information from the ECU as seen in the Mazda MX-5, Scion FRS/Subaru BRZ and the very special Mitsubishi Evo Mode 23 support.
We’ll Take Care Of Your Older Protocol Vehicles Too
Your car may be not be the newest on the block, but it’s probably still awesome. RaceCapture will support older protocols using a classic OBD-II to CAN bridge. This bridge is built into an oversized OBD-II plug and will have the embedded smarts to make older cars appear as if it has a modern CAN bus protocol. Using this adapter RaceCapture will just think it’s talking to a newer car and be none the wiser. You won’t necessarily get the same update performance, as legacy OBD-II is typically slower than modern CAN interfaces- but RaceCapture will get updates as fast as the ECU allows.
Which to choose?
Choosing RaceCapture is easy! It just depends on what kind of car you have:
CAN Bus Hacking and Beyond.
Far beyond a dumb OBD-II dongle, RaceCapture is an ideal hacking tool for the connected race car. With open source firmware you’ll be able to map any CAN bus message to telemetry data and fuse it with high performance GPS and accelerometer/gyro sensors, all streaming over a high speed wireless link.
NEW: Direct CAN mapping!
As seen in the intro above, we'll also include non-OBD-II CAN mapping for ECUs like Megasquirt, AEM, Hondata and other devices!
Motorsports is a high performance world that needs high performance data, and that means high speed communications. In the world of smartphone and tablet connectivity, we have 3 basic choices: Bluetooth classic, Bluetooth Low Energy, and WiFi. Bluetooth classic is a great choice for reasonably high speed wireless communications, and we already use it for RaceCapture/Pro. However, it’s only practical to support on Android - for iOS it’s exceedingly hard due to Apple’s mind-bogglingly restrictive MFI process. Bluetooth Low Energy is equally supported on both platforms but is a non-starter for us due to its slow transfer rate, so save BTLE for the low-performance OBD-II dongles.
This leaves WiFi. WiFi matches the performance levels demanded by RaceCapture and is supported equally well on Android and iOS. RaceCapture will provide a WiFi interface that can both act as an access point as well as join an existing access point, providing maximum flexibility.
A Swiss-Army App
RaceCapture is more than just cool hardware. We’ve written an awesome app currently in use by over a thousand RaceCapture/Pro customers that lets you configure RaceCapture’s features, customize a real-time dashboard, and shows you predicted lap times. The version of the app released with RaceCapture will allow you to notify your friends, fans, and followers about your results and pour through laps of data using the detailed in-app analysis tools. Share your speed secrets, compare your skills with others, and take your place on the leaderboards. . .
Hundreds of Race Tracks, world-wide
We already have hundreds of high quality track maps, contributed by racers like you. Select your favorite tracks and RaceCapture will auto-configure as soon as you arrive at the track! The technology Just Works because we know you need to focus on racing.
Yes video! With data. Data+video. Did we mention video? You’ll be able to combine video and data together with the cameras you already have as a tight, zero-compromise solution. We’re not talking about data overlaid and frozen onto a video stream: we’re talking about data+video integration that’s actually useful, where you can dynamically dig into the details of the data – all online and on your mobile device.
Configuration Made Easy
RaceCapture is built for you for how you want to use it. Need GPS at 10Hz but accelerometer data at 50Hz? Done. The mobile and desktop app are simple and easy to use allowing you to change your configuration and settings on the fly, even in your car! We intentionally designed RaceCapture to be used with the supercomputer in your pocket, bringing performance data hardware into the 21st century.
Everybody loves gauges! The RaceCapture app will come with multiple dashboard screens of preconfigured dashboards, allowing you to hit the track with zero effort. Alerts and warnings can be customized with your favorite (or least favorite) colors and ranges, for how you like to get the info about your car’s stats.
Predict the Future
The best time to improve your performance is while you’re driving! RaceCapture has a powerful predictive lap timer that updates continuously, allowing you to see how your new line through a corner or different braking point affects your lap time instantly. No more wondering why one lap was faster than the other after you exit to the pits, find out now!
Triple A Triple Threat
With RaceCapture, you have a triple A triple threat: Always Available Analysis. That’s a triple threat to your competition: real-time analysis of your performance, while you’re still at the track, and in the palm of your hand. No dragging out a laptop and plugging in cables - data analysis is available on your phone or tablet as soon as you’re back in the paddock, wirelessly and effortlessly. If you’re on a radio, you can even have feedback from a coach or friend watching on their tablet or phone trackside, just like the pros.
Show the World Who You Are!
Where online do you find the majority of your racing friends? A few Facebook groups? A racing club forum? A marque-specific discussion group? Podium is here to put all the pieces of your racing life in one convenient place. Share data and videos, build out a custom profile about yourself and, maybe more importantly for some, your ride! Be known by a group that wants to get to know you - then they’ll try to beat you, but hey that’s what makes racing racing!
Data or it Didn’t Happen
For way too long, we’ve noticed that everyone’s data has been living on their PCs, Macs, USB drives, or memory cards stuck in a drawer. That is, if the data was ever downloaded to begin with. Sometimes racers will share a spreadsheet with their friends or their car club, but that’s not the typical case. With RaceCapture Live, we learned what was possible when our customers could set their data free, so with Podium we want everyone to be able to show their best laps, cleanest runs, dyno tests, ¼ mile excellence, and drift prowess! Because talking about “the one that got away” is fine for fishing, but not for racing.
Because You Rule
In talking to racers of all types around the world, the thing we hear most often is that racers love the feeling of mastery and control when racing - showing your car/kart/bike/boat who’s boss and how badass you can be about it. Now when you rule the road or tear up the tarmac, you can prove to yourself and the world that today was a great day and that track belonged to you.
To the TOP!
Podium will have leaderboards for all the tracks you love. You’ll see who is on the top step, the Top of the Podium, by overall time, by car make/model/year, maybe even by weather conditions and temperature (does that feature interest you? - back this campaign!). We have a whole future planned for Podium and we can’t wait to see what features you’ll all want built!

Development: A story and a bit of history
We’ve been working on RaceCapture’s hardware for many months, and have managed to use a lot of the engineering already present in our powerful RaceCapture/Pro system. RaceCapture is joining a family of products that have been race proven and track tested over the past three years. With a robust power supply, protection circuits, and high quality PCB design, RaceCapture is both tough and compact, ready for the track.
RaceCapture’s big brother has been generous: a large part of the work and engineering for the GPS data processing, predictive lap timing, CAN and OBD-II, and telemetry capabilities have been leveraged from RaceCapture/Pro as well.
And it doesn’t stop there: after hundreds of thousands of telemetry laps from real customers we had some hard-earned lessons. This experience is why we’re well poised to transform the current RaceCapture/Live telemetry platform and RaceCapture app into the exciting, social experience Podium will give you.
Spring - Summer 2015 - Revision A (AKA the scramble)
A RaceCapture prototype Revision A design was completed and several units painstakingly built by hand with tweezers and solder paste - too early for the pick and place machine!
We completed the initial firmware just in time for a demo day at Laguna Seca with hacking that continued at the hotel late into the evening before the event. Six RaceCapture systems were paired with cell phones on windshield mounts that we could quickly move between various Porsche’s, Miatas, Audis, BMWs, and other riff-raff you’d typically see at Mazda Raceway.
It was great to watch our test drivers swap top lap times while monitoring telemetry in real-time.
Paulie Harraka had the top time of the day. at least “officially”. Because without data, it didn’t happen, and he had the data!
All 6 units performed amazingly well and came back intact, ready for some additional mods based on what we learned.
Fall 2015 - Revision A2 (AKA when we test, we test while endurance racing)
As sponsors of the Lucky Dog Racing League we were invited to demo RaceCapture at the Howl-O-Ween Derby at Portland International Raceway. Some circuitry improvements were hacked in, custom cables suitable for endurance racing were built, and we were ready. This time the goal was a double 8 hour race, for 16 total hours of testing under extremely wet conditions over Halloween weekend. Portland had some localized flooding and sections of the track really did have rivers running through them. A lot of our test cars even had open windows, and although the weather bothered the racers, it didn’t bother RaceCapture!
Results? Awesome. (and a huge sigh of relief!) The RaceCapture app worked flawlessly - all six units (plus two RaceCapture/Pros owned by customers in the race) broadcasted real-time racing data without a hiccup, and our cloud services were rock solid. A few firmware glitches cropped up, which although a little embarrassing at the time, we were glad to have - better to fix sooner than later!
Winter 2015 - Revision B
With all of the extensive testing on and off track we spun a Rev B design that improved power supply design, GPS antenna placement, and overall board design. This one is looking like a solid production candidate. We’ll be posting more details as the campaign progresses!

Risks and challenges
The team at Autosport Labs has many combined years of experience launching hardware and software. We have our own hardware production facility just north of Seattle, WA and have learned how to plan ahead for hardware projects and inventory needs.
As mentioned above, we’ve done a great deal of hardware development and testing for RaceCapture, including extensive testing at track days and a grueling 16 hour endurance race weekend. RaceCapture benefits from the extensive race-proven R&D from RaceCapture/Pro and RaceCapture app, both in continuous development.
Although we have a lot of control over the manufacturing process, we are subjected to the typical risks of any hardware project, especially around parts availability and lead times from suppliers. Fortunately, we have existing relationships with reliable suppliers and we feel we have this covered well - as they say, it ain’t our first rodeo. We had a successful IndieGoGo campaign three years ago and shipped our rewards on time, even with stretch goals and new hardware perks added mid-campaign!
All of this hardware experience will allow us to focus on the Podium platform, which will be the bulk of the work to be delivered. Software work is an iterative process and there can and will be bumps in the road. Our philosophy is “release early, release often” - as we’ve already shown in the velocity of our existing app and firmware releases for RaceCapture/Pro. Ultimately, our commitment to you, our backer, is when you have the RaceCapture hardware in hand and you hit the track, you’ll have a fun, rewarding and social experience.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
