About

Oscar is The World's First Artificially Intelligent Trash Can that'll sort all your trash for you.

He's been built to take the hassle out of recycling and is on a mission to help us make the world a cleaner, greener and better place for everyone.

Oh, he’s a clever one. Powered by Artificial Intelligence, and using a custom-built neural network to identify each piece of trash, and sorts it into two compartments - Recyclable and Non-Recyclable.

Oscar will get it sorted, always making sure that everything you put in him ends up in the right place.

The planet has a big ol' trash problem.

Currently, the world recycles just 9% of plastic it uses, so the rest just ends up choking the seas, the trees, the birds, and the bees.

We need to clean up our act. But how?

One of the main issues and the common mistake we make is that our trash just isn’t being separated properly.

At the moment, roughly 1 in every 4 items we put in our recycling bins isn’t actually recyclable, so it contaminates what can be recycled, so we send off the whole lot to the landfill.

We all want to help the environment, right? But things might get in the way, we forget or maybe you just can’t find the time? Oscar has been built for just that, to take the hassle out of recycling. So much so... that he actually does it for you.

Oscar is covered in a biodegradable cardboard skin, giving it a minimalist stripped-back aesthetic. The focus is on the sustainable use of natural materials and the impact this has on the environment and on people's’ lives.

Oscar is Wi-Fi enabled, so just get him online with a QR code from the Oscar App and like magic... He’s alive!

Fitted with motion sensors, he can sense when you’re about to throw something away.

As clever as Oscar is, he’s always getting smarter. Constantly learning about everything and anything that goes inside him. But, he’ll let you know when he needs your help. If he doesn’t recognize a piece of trash, he’ll flash red.

This is when you and he can work together. You can show him what is recyclable or non-recyclable, he’ll then log this new information and share it with the entire AI network, so every Oscar around the world will learn and improve together.

Our crack team of engineers and designers have discreetly embedded Oscar’s AI system into his ultra-clean modern styling.

It was inspired by the existing Inception Network, and pre-trained using the ImageNet dataset.

Oscar’s Neural Network only accepts the best of the best - it’s been trained with a curated dataset which consists of different types of the 50 most common items Oscar’s likely to encounter. Whenever new data is collected, all Oscars have to do their homework, and the whole network retrained.

The basic minimalist design of Oscar gives you a simple and contemporary aesthetic. Slotting perfectly into any kitchen or workplace across the world.

Here at Autonomous, part of our approach to working smarter is to demystify the inner workings and tech magic, that go into our products, making technology more accessible for everyone. With that in mind we want to share with you our story so far, so you can learn more about how he went from a humble cardboard box to a conscious companion.

One day we were chatting about AI and its role in the world and in our lives in general.

It’s out there driving our cars, making our shopping lists and winning on Jeopardy.

It has the ability to take care of the tasks we may not want to do, freeing us up to live a better life.

But truly living better requires us to live in a better world too. Can AI help with that?

Unrecycled trash is a massive contributing factor to our planet's woes. It’s also an absolute pain to do. So we decided to make a bin with a brain that does it for us.

So it began...

6 months ago, young Oscar was nothing more than this sketch on a whiteboard.

First with the body. We tried countless ideas, most of which failed. Giving everything a shot; from plastic and paper to various metals. Finally, something actually worked. Aluminum and cardboard, both can be sustainably sourced and are strong enough to house a robot.

Despite the ‘perceived’ usefulness of custom apps for products, the world has too many and most are unnecessary. Instead, we built a web app, so it can run on anything regardless of device. We have plans to build a lot more features into it: Your own trash data, speak to Oscar and rewards for recycling.

The next mountain to climb was the very essence of Oscar. His AI brain. We wanted him to be able to identify the most common types of trash that go into kitchen and workplace bins.

So we needed data, lots of trash data. Custom building him a Neural Network. The team got stuck in right away, getting their hands nice and dirty, diving head first into our local landfill. Collecting thousands of pictures of trash from landfills. We set the lofty goal of 10,000 images. It turns out gathering data this way, is not effective.

On to the next idea!

We got in touch with some people who actually work in the trash collection business, hiring them to do the image and (eventually) sample collection. Which basically means we ended with an actual mountain of trash in our office. We developed all kinds of software, tools and not-so-smart robots to help us go through the heap of trash. Logging and testing our image recognition technology, as we went.

Training Oscar to recognize wasn’t exactly easy. We started with images, thinking we can sort the trash by classifying the object that Oscar recognizes.

10,000 images later… nothing!

We had to find a new way. Instead of recognizing the actual object, we used what the trash is made of as a recognition tool. Using material make-up software and audio recognition (what it sounded like being dropped in). Drastically changing the recognition rates to 80%. Currently, we have logged over 100,000 images, 10 classes of materials and 10,000 records of material audio.

Risks and challenges

At Autonomous, we’ve been making technology-enabled products for over three years. However, we also recognize that certain risks and challenges are inherent with any first run production of a new product.

Thankfully we’ve been here before. We, as a team of experienced engineers and developers, are prepared to do whatever is necessary to supply a world-class product to our contributors and future customers. Our very first steps to success were on Kickstarter and we've been steadily growing since then.

Oscar - The World’s First AI Trash Can is 100% ready with fully-functional hardware and software, and a streamlined manufacturing process in Yonkers, New York. We wouldn't promise anything less to the Kickstarter community. We're confident in our product and in our ability to deliver. Now, all we need is your support to get the inventory rolling. Help us kickstart Oscar and get ready to rethink recycling - Oscar is here to help.
