Directors Monica Mirabile and Sarah Kinlaw are bringing together six choreographers (including Sigrid Lauren, India Salvor Menuez, and Colin Self), an original score by renowned musicians like Dev Hynes, SOPHIE, and Caroline Polachek, seven installation artists, and a cast of 150+ performers to create a massive, immersive performance at the Knockdown Center in Queens, May 20–22, 2016. Authority Figure is a social psychology experiment that merge choreography, sound, and installation for an experience that asks the audience to consider their own relationships to surveillance, big data, and policing.
About the performance
During each two-hour show, groups of twenty are directed into the 50,000 square-foot space every twenty minutes. Each individual will face different durational and emotional challenges corresponding to the entry time given to them via a mandatory “Personality of Endurance Quiz”.
A team of over 150+ incredible people across disciplines are donating their time and energy to make Authority Figure possible, and we want to make sure people all over the world have the opportunity to experience the work outside of the Knockdown Center and NYC. With your help, we can document the work with the TLC it deserves, and share it widely with those who also feel the affects of authority in their everyday lives.
We have already received generous support in the shape of time, space, and seed money from Knockdown Center, but we are asking for your help to raise $12,900 in support of our most ambitious plans to date. We want the best sound, light, video and installation equipment that's out there, and to document the piece so it can live forever.
How can you get involved in Authority Figure?
No matter where you are in the world or how much you can give, you can be a part of Authority Figure. Your support will help manifest:
- Documentation (photographers, videographers, editors)
- Installation artists
- Technical team
- Rehearsal costs
- Lighting and sound
You can also stay involved by following our process on Twitter and Instagram or by browsing/contributing to #AuthorityFigure. ALSO, encourage your friends and family to back and/or share info on the project! Stay connected and follow us on Twitter and Instagram and by using #AuthorityFigure.
Risks and challenges
The project will happen either way, but without Kickstarter funds, we will have to scale back on some production and documentation. These funds from our Kickstarter campaign will make Authority Figure the production it needs to be.
