About this project
We are designing a public park on what would have been a parking lot in Providence RI. Our philosophy of landscaping emphasizes the use of native, edible, and medicinal plants, as well as plants used for dying fabrics and textiles. Our intention is to create a respite from the concrete city streets as well as an outdoor community classroom. Within this urban landscape we will invite folks to share skills, lectures, and music. We plan to create a place where the neighborhood can drop off their compost and have the opportunity to build friendships.
The first step in creating a garden is building a foundation. By cutting in solid pathways, constructing raised beds for edibles, taking away unhealthy soil and adding over a ton of compost, Aurora Borealis will have what it needs to be a productive garden. We will construct a small tool shed and outdoor kitchen for community building and educational purposes. By utilizing the existing fauna and landscaping new additions, the "weeds" in this lot will reveal their intrinsic beauty. In this first season we will plant shrubs, hearty perennials, fruit trees, as well as a small birch grove for napping cats. This all will take place on what would have been a parking lot, in Providence RI.
