Aurora Aperture Adapter Mount Format Filters

One Set of Filters for Every Lens

Aurora Aperture Adapter Mount Format Filter (AMF) is a revolutionary filter system that works for all DSLR lenses on popular mirrorless mount adapters.

You will only need one set of filters for all your adapted lenses, no more multiple sets of filters or step-up rings, or complicated and bulky square filter systems.

The AMF drop-in filters work extremely well with ultra wide-angle lenses, especially with those that have a protruding front element and are without front filter threads. Those types of lenses require a bulky filter adapter paired with very large filters. They are inconvenient to carry around and are unfriendly to your wallet.

The AMF filter sits inside a mount adapter and we’ve designed the filter frame to be completely free from light leak.

There is zero vignetting caused by the filter since it sits in the middle of a light path.

Four popular mirrorless mount adapters are supported currently: the Canon mount adapter EF-EOS R, the Nikon FTZ mount adapter, the Sigma's MC-11* mount adapter for Sony E mount cameras such as the a7, a9, NEX, a5000, and a6000 series, and the Sigma’s MC-21* mount adapter for L mount cameras such as the Panasonic Lumix DC-S1, DC-S1R, Leica SL, and Sigma fp.

* Refer to the Sigma MC-11/21 compatibility list for further information.

Design

Compact and Simple to Use

We’re no stranger to rear mount filters. Back in 2017, we introduced the world's first rear mount glass filters for the Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM and other Canon lenses with a rear gel filter mount.

Compared to our Canon EF rear mount filters, there is more space inside a mount  adapter so we were able to design the drop-in filter with much improved usability.

With the experience we gained in designing and making rear mount filters, we are able to build a very robust filter system for the mirrorless mount adapters.

Using an AMF drop-in filter is very simple: Just drop a filter into the cavity of a supported mirrorless mount adapter and you’re ready to go. When changing to a different lens the drop-in filter can stay in the adapter.

Optical Quality

Multilayer Nano-Coatings

Our proven high-performance nano-coating technology is used for light reduction to ensure accurate color rendition and utmost resolution.

Like all our filters, PFPE nano-coatings are applied to the optical surfaces of the drop-in filters to repel water, oil, dust, and dirt.

German Schott SuperWhite B270® glass is used as the base glass for the filters except for the PowerDusk™.

Our neodymium based PowerDusk™ LPR filters are nano-coated with anti-reflective coating, thus increasing the useful light by 10% while reducing the unwanted light by 9%.

Precision and Durability

Build to Last

The 7075 series aerospace-grade aluminum alloy is used for the thin drop-in filter frame due to the demanding requirements of the design. The 7075 series is practically twice as 6000 series aluminum alloys used in conventional filter frames.

Advanced computer numerical control (CNC) machine centers are used to produce the drop-in filter frames to meet our precision requirements.

The filter frames are anodized for corrosion protection and to prevent internal reflections.

Product Family

Sensor Protector, ND, GND, and LPR

Filters available for all four camera mount adapters are: A sensor protector, various strengths of ND filters, graduated ND or GND filters in three different strengths, and a light pollution reduction (LPR) filter.

The sensor protector serves the purpose of filtering out unwanted ultraviolet (UV) lights, and more importantly, shields a camera sensor from various contaminations when changing lenses.

The ND filters are based on our PowerND™ fixed ND filter family, with more strengths of light reduction capabilities from 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, to 16 stops.

There are three strengths of GND filters: 1.5 stops, 2.5 stops and 3.5 stops. Unlike the conventional 2, 3, or 4 stops GND filters the ratings of these GND filters are based on results of analyzing over several thousands of photos and videos we took using modern digital cameras. They can produce more balanced results in typical scenes.

Our newly introduced LPR filter, the PowerDusk™, is not only very useful in astrophotography but also for street photography during blue hours.

The PowerDusk filter can filter out artificial lighting like sodium vapor lamps which commonly are used in street lighting, thus increasing contrast and practically eliminating color cast caused by urban light pollution.

Rewards

In this project we offer four types of filters (UV, ND, GND, and LPR) for four different mirrorless mount adapters, with up to 44 filters in total.

To simplify the pledging process, we offer rewards by the number of filters. Namely one, two, three, to eleven. You won’t need to choose which type (UV, ND, GND, or LPR) or which format (Canon, Nikon, Sony/Sigma and L mount/Sigma) during the pledging process. You just choose the number of filters you want to pledge.

One can mix and match the type and format of the filters, such 1 x UV, 2 x ND filters, 1 x GND filters, plus 1 x LPR filter for the Canon R (total of 5) format. Or 3 ND filters plus 2 GND filters for both the Canon and Sigma MC-11/Sony E (total of 10) formats.

After the project is successfully funded, backers will be asked to provide information regarding the type and the format in a Kickstarter survey process. This will happen about 20 days after the funding is completed. An email will be sent from Kickstarter to notify backers about the survey which also collects mailing address for delivery.

As shown in the following table, we offer various incentives to our backers, starting from 15% off to 35% off.

We provide a small protective case that can be used to store up to 10 filters. This case is included for pledges of 5 filters or more. Backers who pledge less than 5 filters can add the cost of the case, US$18, to their existing pledge amount. This needs to be done by manually adding up the $18 to your pledged cost, either during the pledging process, or after by using the "Manage your pledge" green button in your project home page.

Production and Timeline

The filter frame designs have been completed and we had a small volume pre-production run for field tests.

Based on the feedbacks from the field test, we may need to tweak the frame designs to improve usability. We do not expect significant delays with the modifications.

The UV sensor protector filters are based on the same process in our existing PowerUV product with exception of using the Schott B270® glass instead of the Gorilla Glass. The ND filters are based the mature coating technology in our current PowerND™ product family. The GND filters and LRP filters are new products for us. We are using a mature and stable production process for the GND and LPR filters.

Risks and challenges

The main challenge for this project is going to be on-time delivery. In our past crowdfunding projects, we had run into a various degree of delays. We are still learning how to best manage the production schedule and to effectively work with our suppliers.

This is the first time for both us and our supplier making such small size filters with unique filter frames. Comparing to the traditional circular filter frames, our drop-in filters are more difficult to make. It will also take more time to assemble the glass and metal frame together than circular filters.

We may tweak the coating process for the GND filters based on feedback from our beta testers.

All of these could add delays to the manufacturing process and ultimately the final shipment date.

Experienced crowd funders who have backed many projects should know this well. While we do not imply that shipping delays in crowdfunding should be a norm, we would like to bring this up to the first time backers. You are backing a project from the late stage of prototyping to the full production. Unlike buying a product at a store, you may experience the same challenges along with the project creator, with a reward at a reduced cost. It is the risk you will undertake in a crowdfunding project.
