For the last seven years, I've been sitting on the idea of writing a novel about two imaginary characters: Caldwell the Fox and Jinx the Rabbit. This February, I took a break from blogging and finally sat down to begin the writing process, and when I did, I was SHOCKED by how easily the story seemed to write itself.
I completed the first, full draft within the space of almost 10 different cafes and coffee shops, and I'd like to give a shout out to each of them here:
Urban Standard (Bham, AL)
Redcat (Bham, AL)
Saturn (Bham, AL)
Golden Temple (Bham, AL)
Amethyst (Denver, CO)
Hudson Hill (Denver, CO)
Thump (Denver, CO)
The Corner Beet (Denver, CO)
Whole Foods (Bham and Denver)
My boyfriend, Charlie, performed the first big revision of the novel in late May, and my best friend, Frank, is currently performing the second revision. I will complete my own third revision of the novel during the week of July 1st-July 7th, and will then begin the publishing process on July 22nd, when this Kickstarter project is scheduled to end (successfully, I hope!).
I've researched different publishing methods and compared the costs, and I've decided that, with just getting the book out there being my top priority (instead of scoring a book deal and raking in lots of $$$), I'm going to take the economically-priced self-publishing route (which isn't totally free, but it's a lot less pricey -- like, instead of investing THOUSANDS of dollars into the project, I'll end up spending somewhere in-between one and two thousand).
My Kickstarter goal is to raise $1325.00, and if you're interested in knowing where, exactly, I'll be applying these donated funds, I'm itemizing projected costs below (I've taken low-to-average estimates from the interwebs):
- Jacket Design (cover and interior): $500
- Copyright: $50
- ISBN: $125
- POD start-up fee: $250
- e-formatting: $100
- Jefferson County Library Donations: $150
- Kickstarter's Cut: $75
- "Thank you!" dinner for Charlie and Frank (editors): $50
- Coffee for Jace (aka purchasing coffee shop couch time for two more revisions + customizing gifts for pledgers): $25
In quick summary... finally getting around to writing this novel was, cliche as it sounds, a dream come true. Jinx the Rabbit is my favorite story. It's magical. It has my whole heart and soul in it. Writing the story and then, as I'm in the process of editing, re-reading it has brought me to tears AND made me laugh. So, to help this novel really take off (like a rocketship), please donate what you can, if you can, and when you either get a copy of the book in your hands or pull it up on some gadget, I hope it makes you feel like you're full of undying hope, ceaseless joy, and endless love.
All of my love and gratitude,
(Questions or comments? Shoot me a message at email@example.com!)
