WHAT’S AUGUST MOON? With a 21st Century twist, the August Moon Drive-In is reconceived as an indoor experience within a 45,000 square foot air supported dome. The environment, created by some of the top theatrical, film and theme park designers, features stunning attention to detail, including 45 real classic cars, dozens of full size trees, grass, gravel pathways, a panoramic starry sky overhead, fireflies, and, of course, a stunning August “sailor’s moon” glowing orange and red, just above the tree line.
PEOPLE EVERYWHERE LOVE vintage cars, movies and comfort food - cheeseburgers, fries and shakes, in particular. The Drive-In movie theaters of the 1950s and 60’s combined those beloved parts of American popular culture better than anything else and they defined an era. Ultimately, however, they failed, and mostly faded away, because they had a flawed business model. They were seasonal, weather sensitive, inefficient to operate, and they could only happen at night, among many other factors - NOT because people didn’t like the experience.
BROUGHT TO YOU BY… After a career of more than 20 years making immersive theater, entertainment, events, and experiences of all types (with brands like Disney, the Walking Dead, Blue Man Group, Michael Kors and many others), my team and I had the idea of re-creating a perfect summer night at a classic American Drive-In movie theater in the late 1960’s as an indoor transportive entertainment experience - a movie theater, restaurant, immersive attraction, and transportive experience built around a film-set sized recreation of that bygone moment in Americana. All housed in a 50,000 square foot indoor sound stage. Here are some images of what it will look like:
THE SPECIFICS: It will feature 45 classic cars, like these, as the primary seating option. It will include a full service bar, a kitchen serving the highest quality American comfort food, and other elements like a vintage ice cream truck, airstream trailers as private party spaces, stadium seating, porch swings, and waiter service to every location. With every detail of this experience in mind, August Moon will transport patrons to a perfect summer night at a classic American Drive-In movie in the late 1960’s.
PROGRESS TO DATE: After investing $1.2 million in the initial development of the project (design, preliminary engineering, operational plan and team, F&B design, creation of the identity, and the development of some key partnerships), our recent progress includes having tee’d up the opportunity to build and open the flagship location in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in partnership with the developers of the Tower Shops at Mountain Mile. We have the support of the developer, the city, local and regional press as well as a large and growing list of fans (in the region and elsewhere) and active engagement with investors who want to finance the construction in Pigeon Forge and fund the opening of the business.
WHAT WE NEED NOW, and why we are coming to you through Kickstarter, is enough money to complete the final design and location specific engineering - AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, to show through the success of our Kickstarter Campaign that we can create a movement around this concept. We need to show our investors that YOU ARE THERE - excited for and ready to support our launch with enough engagement and enthusiasm to make us successful. Whether you are in the region of the flagship in Tennessee or elsewhere in the country or world, we need your support - and ultimately this is for you, wherever you are. We have a vision of taking this concept to cities around the US and to countries around the world as soon as we can.
HOW YOU CAN HELP. So, if you love this idea (or are intrigued enough to start a journey with us) please consider helping us launch our first unit by making a contribution for one of the rewards defined herein. We couldn’t be more certain of this idea and team or more excited at the possibility of seeing you at the opening.
Risks and challenges
The effort to open August Moon in Pigeon Forge is dependent on the larger development of Mountain Mile and that project. With any large real estate project there are many factors that can slow it down or derail it. In our projects favor, the first and most expensive and complicated aspects of the Mountain Mile project - namely the Mountain Monster thrill ride - has already opened. Additionally, the retail has been built out and the lease for the anchor tenant (REI) has been signed but this is a new development and as such is new to the market as an overall attraction. Beyond the development issues, it could take us longer than expected to close the remaining investment necessary to open the project - after this final phase of creative development. Finally, August Moon is a work in progress and this is the first such venue of its kind, and because of that we are learning everything for the first time. We do, however, have a team that has been dedicated to his type of work for decades - and who represent some of the most accomplished people in their respective fields. This is all to say, there are many challenges and risks to this project and we want everyone contributing to it and supporting us to know that. Some of the risks we are aware of, and some we are not. We are 100% committed to making this happen and will continue to work tirelessly to get it done.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
