Who we are and what we're doing
My friend Ian Steplowski is an artist and character modeler at Pixar Animation Studios. He creates digital art for the movies.
Ian and I are collaborating on an illustrated version of Realms Unreel, which we hope to publish by June 2012. We've launched this Kickstarter project to pay for the up-front costs of a short-run print of the hardbound book with full-color illustrations.
Why illustrate Realms Unreel?
Now for a word from the illustrator himself! Ian writes:
When Audrey approached me with the idea of doing an illustrated version of Realms Unreel, I was excited at the both the opportunity to work with her on her first book and the chance to apply some of my experience in 3D art to a different medium. Given recent advances in 3D sculpting techniques, there's a lot of intriguing room to explore the blending of images created via 3D sculpting with the storytelling approaches more often seen in 2D illustration.
Over the past few months, I've been organizing "Model Nights" with some co-workers to experiment with Pixologic's ZBrush software through spontaneous 90-minute speed sculpting challenges; the results include the "ZSketch" posts you'll see on my blog from the past few months. With this exploration in full swing and now leading into some print illustration-friendly results, what better fit for stepping up to a bigger project than applying it to a story which largely involves virtual worlds?
Why your support matters to us
Your support enables us to pay for the up-front costs of a short-run print of the hardbound book with full-color illustrations.
We'd like the illustrated version of Realms Unreel to be a beautiful object in addition to a great read, so we're planning to use high-quality materials for the binding, dust jacket, and interior pages. Your support will allow us to afford these special touches and ensure that we have readers who want to receive the first copies of the illustrated book, hot off the presses!
Where the money goes
There are lots of great options for print-on-demand publishing these days that allow self-published authors to produce books with essentially zero up-front costs. The paperback version of Realms Unreel has just been published this way, and, really, it's amazing how far printing technology has come to enable such things.
Nonetheless, printing a hardbound book the length of Realms Unreel with color pages is prohibitively expensive using print-on-demand services -- anywhere from $60 to $85 per book, depending on the binding and material options we use. In order to make the book available at a reasonable price to readers, we need to invest money up front to work with a printer who can do a short run print of the book. We'd like to do a run of at least 100 copies, and hopefully more if supporter interest and funds allow.
Details about your goodies!
We've done our best to maximize bang for your buck at every reward level. Assuming this campaign reaches its goal, you will be rewarded as follows:
To all of you who support this project, whatever your contribution level, we are deeply grateful, and I will e-mmortalize your name on a thank-you page on my author website -- as well as any equivalent future telecommunication media that may come into vogue in my writing lifetime -- so that neither you nor I shall ever forget your generous support of this creative endeavor.
Everyone supporting at the $5 level and up will receive the e-book version of Realms Unreel with the author's e-signature digitally embedded -- and personalized, for those of you who so desire. The e-book will be emailed to you in non-DRM PDF, Kindle, and ePub (compatible with Nook, iBooks, and many other e-readers) formats. The e-book should be in your inbox within 5 business days of our receipt of your email contact information.
All of you $15 supporters will receive the signed e-book as described above, as well as the paperback version of Realms Unreel signed by the author -- or a personalized inscription, for those of you who so desire. You should receive your paperback within 7 business days of our receipt of your mailing address. So, after you emerge from the busy holiday season, you'll be able to curl up with the Realms Unreel paperback for a little escape on a dreary winter day.
You $30 and up supporters will receive the author- and illustrator-signed, hardbound, full-color illustrated version of Realms Unreel as soon as it's available. You will also receive the e-signed e-book as described above. We will be producing the book illustrations over the course of spring 2012, and we plan to have the content to the printer for production in early May. We aim to ship the first copies in early June of 2012, so you should have the book on your doorstep by mid-June. We will notify you if we anticipate any delays with production or shipping of the hardcover book.
You $60 and up supporters should receive your paperback and tee shirt within 7 business days of our receipt of your mailing address and tee shirt size. Your signed hardbound book should arrive by mid-June, as described above. As of January 9th, we've added a bonus gift for $60 supporters: a signed print of the book artwork.
Backers outside the USA, please note: For shipping addresses outside the USA, we may need to ask you to support the project at a higher level to offset shipping costs. Thank you for your understanding! We've added a FAQ below to provide suggested pledge amounts for a number of countries about which we've already received inquiries. If your country isn't on the list, please send us a message and we'll get back to you promptly to calculate a suggested pledge amount for the reward you'd like.
For you $120 and up supporters, your five bonus paperbacks will ship on the same schedule as that described above for the single paperback. Your signed hardcover, signed paperback, e-signed e-book, and tee shirt will also ship as described above. As of January 9th, we've added a bonus gift for $120 supporters: a signed print of the book artwork plus a gift set of three signed enlarged prints of the book artwork.
For you $250 and up supporters, we will contact you to thank you personally and make sure we have your name exactly as you would like it to appear in the acknowledgements of the hardbound illustrated version of Realms Unreel. Your signed hardcover, signed paperback, e-signed e-book, five bonus paperbacks, and tee shirt will also ship as described above. As of January 9th, we've added a bonus gift for $120 supporters: a signed print of the book artwork plus a gift set of three signed enlarged prints of the book artwork.
For you munificent $1000 supporters, our reward description has expanded as of January 9th. In return for your generous donation, you will receive lifetime VIP status with the author. This includes two signed copies of all future books by Audrey Auden, a non-expiring IOU for dinner with the author (i.e. the next time you and Auden are in the same city, she owes you and your +1 dinner), "insider access" if and when the author ever goes on a book signing tour or has a screening of a film based on her work AND a large print of a piece of book artwork of your choice with a personal inscription by the author and illustrator PLUS your name in the hardcover acknowledgements, the signed hardcover, signed paperback, e-signed e-book, wicked tee shirt, signed print, five bonus paperbacks, and signed prints gift set
For our first $5000 supporter, you will receive all of the rewards described above, and we will contact you to schedule a meeting or meal over which to discuss your thoughts on the secondary character whom you'd like to see join the cast of Realms Unreel Episode 2: Bonds Endure.
More about Realms Unreel
Realms Unreel tells the story of a man who can't die who follows the reincarnation of the woman he loves into the Silicon Valley of the near future to learn from her the secret to passing into the next life himself.
Dom Artifex watched the woman he loved give up her undying body in exchange for passage into a land beyond Death. Dom was afraid to follow her, and he despairs of ever seeing her again.
Dom discovers that a strange connection remains between him and his lost love, binding him to each of her reincarnations. Her latest reincarnation is Emmie Bridges, a girl born in the Silicon Valley of the near future.
Emmie grows up to become a designer of virtual worlds in a society shaped by pervasive virtual reality technology and the global alternet information network. When Emmie’s beloved mentor is assassinated, leaving Emmie in possession of a mysterious manuscript that Dom believes contains the secret of death, Dom makes contact with Emmie in an effort to obtain both her trust and the manuscript.
Despite Dom’s efforts to protect Emmie, the assassin is now looking for her and will stop at nothing to keep the manuscript secret. Emmie must retrace the steps of her past reincarnations through worlds both real and virtual to uncover the secret Dom seeks.
