About this project
Replay with sound
Songwriter/composer Daniel Knox and I were recently selected by the Byrd Hoffman Watermill Foundation to be artists in residence this fall at Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center in Watermill, NY.
Through the course of the residency, Daniel will expand, develop, and complete a long-form piece of music written and arranged for piano, voice, horns, strings, and percussion, based on my photography.
The residency will culminate in a premiere performance of the final piece alongside an exhibition of the integral photographs at the 92YTribeca, New York, NY on 26 January 2012.
Twenty of the photos will be framed, printed, and installed as well as projected as part of the performance. As many as twelve musicians – a full ensemble with a string section and horn player - will perform Daniel’s score.
The Watermill Center has a formidable presence in the international arts community so this project presents us both with a great opportunity. Their residency program champions emerging artists by offering them the time, space, and exposure to accomplish their vision. But the full scope of what we want to achieve with this depends upon your support. We need funding to help cover production expenses for the exhibition: framing, printing, and equipment rental, accompanying musicians, publicity materials and costs.
With $6,000, we can put together the show as it was first envisioned: performance of the piece with a limited ensemble, a projection of the images, and ‘home-framed’ prints of the integral images.
With $8,000, we can hire more musicians for more rehearsal time, upgrade the printing and framing process and spend a little more money on publicity.
With $10,000, we could afford to bring in two particularly key musicians (from London and San Francisco) who have collaborated with Daniel in the past and whose inclusion would make this a world-class affair.
With $15,000, we can bring this exhibition to other arts centers in Chicago, Los Angeles, London, and beyond.
Any donation is greatly appreciated. We are beside ourselves with excitement over this opportunity. We hope, with your help, that we can put together the greatest possible performance. Thank you for your time.
