Updated -- Stretch goal!

If we can hit $3456, all the extra will go into making the print edition of Monica's notes that much more impressive.

Phase 1

This Kickstarter is to fund phase 1 of the GMBLMZ project. This consists of the inner maze, the two octagonal gimbal rings, and the base. With phase 1 complete, the maze will be fully functional. People will be able to guide the ball through the maze by manually rotating each axis. If you watch the project video where I demonstrate a similar kid's toy, you can get some sense of what maneuvering a ball through a 3D track like this is like -- only imagine it towering well over twice your height!

The funds from this Kickstarter will be going entirely to buy materials for phase 1. The gimbal rings and stand will require 380 feet of 1" square tube, 440 feet of 1/2" square tube, and 70 feet of 4" square tube. That's already half a ton! On top of that, the inner maze itself will be even more complicated, depending on the exact materials I can find at a good price. The renderings here show one posible configuration, including an opaque plastic tube section, spirals, funnels, loops, etc.

Phase 2

A crank and chain drive will be added in phase 2, so that the maze may be rotated in all 3 degrees of freedom from outside the structure. This is beyond the scope of this Kickstarter, but I wanted to show what the ultimate goal of the project is. If there is time before the Burn I will try to get phase 2 finished as well. These mechanical linkages are, for me, the real reason to be making GMBLMZ, and they will be done next year if there isn't time for 2014.

Rewards

I'm keeping the rewards a bit simpler this time, but the most popular options are back again. At the high end there is the etched brass plate which will be mounted on the GMBLMZ itself.

And I'm very happy that Monica Toth will be preparing another set of project notes this year. These draw from my real working notes, with the important distinction of being legible and utterly gorgeous. They will be available in PDF form at the lower levels and in a bound, physical edition at the medium levels. I'm particularly excited about this reward, as I think it's going to be really spectacular.

Conclusion

Two years ago I ran my first Kickstarter, raising funds to build the Harmonic Fire Pendula.

And it was a pretty big success! But I think I can do better this year -- with your help. Let's make something incredible.

Risks and challenges

I have designed, fabricated and installed large, complicated steel art like this before. Having already prototyped the strut design and made an assembly jig for welding them up, I am very confident in completing phase 1 of the project in time for the Burn. Phase 2 is less certain, which is why it isn't included in this Kickstarter.
