Thank you so very much for visiting our project. We are so grateful for your time and support. Supporting this novel will help an indie author accomplish her dream.
E.D.E. Bell, engineer, mom of three, and author of fantasy novel Spireseeker, is writing a daring epic fantasy trilogy about dragons and wizards. And she needs your help! Editing, illustrating, and printing are expensive, and Kickstarter funds will be necessary to enable us to publish The Banished Craft. Without a successful Kickstarter campaign, the project will be delayed until funds are available. With your help, we can get the first book of the Shkode trilogy out into everyone’s hands. It’s going to be epic!
Reasons to back this project: (Keep reading - There may be one for you!)
You know the author: The friends and family who have supported the author striving toward her dream are appreciated more than you may realize.
You love to read: E.D.E. Bell’s first novel maintains a 4.5+ average rating on Amazon. This one will be much better. She promises.
You love epic fantasy: So do we. Support epic fantasy! E.D.E. Bell has been worldbuilding for a couple of years on this project. But you can’t experience the worlds of Teirrah and Arev without helping to get the project funded. Huzzah!
You love supporting dreams via Kickstarter: So do we. On her personal account, the author is a frequent backer of projects. Kickstarter karma, engage.
You want to see the next level: The author has heard the critiques of Spireseeker loud and clear, and is working really hard to not repeat her mistakes. If this book never gets published, you won't see how much she's improved.
You support the arts: She’s an indie author. She loves to write. Show some love! Every pledge helps.
You enjoy fighting the system: E.D.E. Bell needs your support in order to continue as an independent author, and allow her characters to speak their mind without the Man on their back. Fight. Fight the power!
You love dragons. Or wizards: We did tell you this book is about dragons and wizards, right? You’re going to let a book about dragons and wizards go without getting in on the fun? I don’t think so.
You’re a vegan, vegetarian, or believe in compassion toward animals: E.D.E. Bell feels strongly about ethical treatment of animals, and her novels feature vegan heroes. She has been transitioning from vegetarian to vegan over the last 17 years, and is proud to now be fully vegan.
You want to promote gender or LGBT equality: Gay? Feminist? Trans? As a woman who has spent her life in traditionally male roles, E.D.E. Bell loves to explore issues of gender identity. No spoilers here, but you won’t be disappointed. Especially in book two. Which...only happens if you fund book one. ; )
You wish there were more females in fantasy: Ok, so we’ve got a woman (and mom) writing about a main character who is a woman. It even gets better, but no spoilers here. But gurl, you will love it.
You want to see more diverse heroes: The main human character is a woman of a medium-brown complexion with a face that won't look entirely Caucasian. Bell's daughter is biracial, and she liked the idea of putting a woman on the cover that didn't fit the standard mold for fantasy.
You’re interested in non-violence philosophies: So the author has been reading some Gandhi and Jain texts. Exploration of non-violence ideas will be present throughout the series.
You’re over grimdark: No raping, no gutting! There will be violence in the Shkode trilogy, but nothing that you wouldn't let your mom read, and nothing that will give you nightmares.
You want to punch all that stuff that was just listed in the face: That’s fine too. We already told you it’s about dragons and wizards. There will be fighting dragons, wizard-battles, people hooking up, and stuff that is totally not wimpy and perhaps even offensive. Dragonsex? Mebbe.
You’re the Midwestern sort, you know: The author is from Michigan/Ohio and while she loves the coasts, she wants great art to come from the middle as well.
You’re an Anna Rettberg fan: She’s amazing, isn’t she? Anna has some creative ideas for the cover, but we need your help to bring them to life.
Still not feeling it? Ok. Well, we really appreciate you giving this project a look. Could we ask you to mark a reminder on this project, and in the meantime follow E.D.E. Bell:
Editing, illustrating, and offset printing are expensive. Really expensive, actually. The base amount of this Kickstarter covers the bare minimum we need to be able to complete the investment ourselves. We are already committed to investing the money necessary to print a hardcover edition, if we can get Kickstarter help to prepay some of the other expenses. These expenses include:
Base amount: $3000: With a successful Kickstarter project, we will be able to pay professional illustrator Anna Rettberg for a stunning wrap-around cover. We will also be able to afford a minimal amount of editing, likely limited to basic copy editing.
Stretch Goal #1: $4000: This will enable a fully professional copy edit, as well as four (repeated) chapter title illustrations, drawn by Kyle Walblay.
Stretch Goal #2: $5000: This will enable more comprehensive editing, improving the quality of the book by reviewing phrasing and story flow beyond the basic grammar/typo check of a copy edit. At this level, we will still be limited to performing the editing on portions of the book only, or with reduced fidelity of the critique. Also at this level, we will add an additional 4-5 black & white interior illustrations by Kyle Walblay.
Stretch Goal #3: $7500: At this level, we can perform a full professional edit of the book. This will improve the quality dramatically, making a much better product for you to enjoy, and highly increasing chances of the book’s long-term success. If we really fully-fund the editing, we’ll get special Kickstarter-only limited editions bookmarks printed (and signed) for all hardcover reward levels.
Stretch Goal #4: $9000: At this level, our backers would help us select whether to emboss the dust jacket (like bestseller professional fantasy hardcovers), or hire a professional to illustrate the maps of Arev and Teirrah, the locations in which this novel takes place. (Otherwise, we will make the maps ourselves using some quite “vintage” gamer software.)
Stretch Goal #5: $10500: At this level, we could afford both: the embossed dust jacket and the professional map! That would be one amazing looking book!
Any funds raised beyond this amount (wow - that would be some serious support for indie fantasy!) would help us with the cost of the hardcover printing.
Thank you so very much for your consideration and support. With your help, we can do this!
