About

The Icarus and Jellinek graphic novels are about two unlikely heroes: a winged young man who falls into a dormant volcano with no memory of anything but his name, and a flamepetal prospector down on his luck (and everything else), with his two-tailed, four-legged, lava resistant companion, Rig. Together, they must discover the secret of Icarus' identity if they are to save their worlds from those who want his powers for themselves. We are proud to present this story of wonder, of friendship, and of a battle to overcome tyranny, with creatures who discover that what unites them at the core is more important than what divides them on the surface.

"Gregory A. Wilson is a good friend, great man, and superb writer. Everyone should take a look at anything and everything he does!” - Ed Greenwood, creator of the Forgotten Realms®

In 2014, speculative fiction author Gregory A. Wilson and Silence in the Library Publishing teamed up to run a Kickstarter supporting the publication of a new graphic novel: Icarus, the story of a young man who falls into the heart of a dormant volcano.

Atthis Arts is proud to continue the adventure with a newly illustrated release of Icarus along with the next chapter in the story: Jellinek. These striking new volumes are written by author Gregory A. Wilson, featuring the amazing art of Áthila Fabbio.

If you are new to Icarus - WELCOME! All of the rewards include both graphic novels so you can experience Icarus and Jellinek's story from the beginning.

If you are a backer of the original 2014 Icarus Kickstarter - the RETURN TO VOL rewards are just for you! Your exclusive Jellinek rewards include:

  • e-book copies of the Icarus re-release with all-new artwork
  • paperback copies of the Icarus re-release at half price with purchase
  • backers of both campaigns will be acknowledged in the Limited-Edition hardcovers

Original backers, you have our sincere thanks! We just wouldn't be here without you.

Praise for the Project

  • "Gregory A. Wilson is a good friend, great man, and superb writer. Everyone should take a look at anything and everything he does!” - Ed Greenwood, creator of the Forgotten Realms®
  • "I backed Icarus & Jellinek ... because Gregory is so freakin' great." - Amal El-Mohtar, Hugo, Nebula, Locus winner.
  • "Support this excellent Kickstarter!" - Cat Rambo, World Fantasy & Nebula nominated F&SF writer/editor/teacher.
  • "This looks amazing!" - Gem City Comic Con
  • "This is a great team...and I love the artwork. I'm looking forward to this." - Maurice Broaddus, author,  teaching artist, and community servant.

Gregory A. Wilson is a professor of English at St. John's University in New York City, where he teaches creative writing, speculative fiction, and other courses in literature. He is the author of the epic fantasy The Third Sign (Gale - Cengage, 2009), the dark fantasy Grayshade, first book of The Gray Assassin Trilogy (The Ed Greenwood Group, 2017), and the graphic novels Icarus and Jellinek (Atthis Arts, forthcoming 2020). Alligator Alley Entertainment will publish his first RPG adventure, Tales and Tomes from the Forbidden Library, in August. The second edition of his academic book, The Problem in the Middle: Liminal Space and the Court Masque, was published in April by Clemson UP. He also has a number of published short stories in various anthologies.

He co-hosts the critically acclaimed Speculate! The Podcast for Writers, Readers, and Fans (speculatesf.com), an actual play podcast in its ninth year of production. He is a member of the Gen Con Writers' Symposium and the Origins Library, and is regularly invited to present work at national and international conventions.

Wilson is the author of numerous articles and book chapters on a variety of academic subjects. He is also the lead singer and trumpet player for the progressive rock band The Road (thebandtheroad.com), which just released its third album Five Years Later. Finally, under the moniker Arvan Eleron, he hosts the successful Twitch channel focused on story and narrative, with many ongoing TTRPG campaigns, featuring authors from Amal El-Mohtar to Cat Rambo to Carlos Hernandez as regular players.

He lives with his wife Clea, daughter Senavene, and son Calen — both children named at his wife's urging for characters in The Third Sign, for which he believes they have forgiven him — in Riverdale, NY His virtual home is gregoryawilson.com.

Áthila Fabbio, 28, lives in Brazil in the state of Sâo Paulo. He was professor of Comics from 2013 to 2018, and during this time he began to work as an illustrator.

He has done art for some issues of Back to the Future, TMNT, and the Bumblebee graphic novel for IDW, as well as for "Jumo Health" which makes comics for children with diseases, aimed at distribution in hospitals. He is currently working on a comic for NPE Editore in Italy and along with Icarus / Jellinek for Atthis Arts.

Before becoming an illustrator he worked as a mechanic in his father's company, working from the period of 2004 to 2013. But since he was six years old, he has always wanted to draw in comics. His artwork can be seen on his Instagram and Facebook page.

Keith R.A. DeCandido has written more than fifty novels, more than a hundred short stories, and dozens of comic books and graphic novels over the past twenty-five years. Previous graphic novels include the official continuation of the cult TV show Farscape (in collaboration with the show's creator Rockne S. O'Bannon), as well as work in the worlds of Cars, Star Trek, StarCraft, and Kung Fu Panda. His other 2019 releases include the novels Mermaid Precinct (the latest in his fantasy/police procedural series), A Furnace Sealed (the first in his new urban fantasy series about a nice Jewish boy from the Bronx who hunts monsters), and Alien: Isolation (based on the movie series and the hit videogame); and short stories in the anthologies Thrilling Adventure Yarns, Brave New Girls: Adventures of Gals & Gizmos, Unearthed, Footprints in the Stars, and Release the Virgins! In 2009, he was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Association of Media Tie-in Writers, which means he never needs to achieve anything ever again. His nonfiction on pop culture has appeared in multiple sources, including regularly on Tor.com and Keith's own Patreon (patreon.com/krad), as well as in various anthologies. He's also a professional musician (currently with the parody band Boogie Knights), an editor of thirty years' standing (working for clients both corporate and private), a third-degree black belt in karate (which he teaches to both children and adults), and probably some other stuff that he can't remember due to the lack of sleep. Find out less at DeCandido.net.

Layout and Lettering

In addition these books will benefit from the talents of layout/letterer Kris Siuda. Kris has a degree in film and is currently pursuing a graduate degree in game design; he is also an expert in the world of comic books and graphic novels, and did the layout and lettering for the first version of Icarus. He will continue the layout/lettering of these new additions along with contributions to the books cover layout and marketing.

Stretch Goals:

The creative team really believes in this project — and to give it the best chance of success, they've worked their payment structures around a bare-minimum goal. But we believe in paying creators well for their work and would LOVE to exceed this goal, allowing us to pay the team higher rates, while unlocking some great STRETCH GOALS!

500 Backers: Gregory Wilson will host a live discussion on his Twitch Channel covering the story of Icarus and Jellinek, the process of creating a graphic novel, the artwork, or anything else you want to discuss.

750 Backers: DM Gregory Wilson will host an online one-shot D&D adventure  set in the world of VOL with special guest players.

1000 Backers: Everyone will receive an electronic copy of the Gregory A. Wilson's prose novel (over 80k words) on which the Icarus graphic novel is based.

$15,000 Pledged: All print backers will receive an Icarus/Jellinek bookmark, and possibly other cool swag. Digital supporters will receive the bookmark design as an electronic file.

$20,000 Pledged: All print backers will receive a high-quality print of art from the project, signed by artist Áthila Fabbio.  Electronic backers will receive a digital version of the signed artwork.

$25,000 Pledged: An audio-enhanced epub (e.g. iBooks) will be made of the Icarus graphic novel (book 1).

As we achieve stretch goals, more will be added!

Who are we?

We are a small, independent publisher out of Detroit, Michigan. We believe in the artistic voice of the author being at the core of our projects.

We celebrate writing as art, and so we are thrilled to feature the combination of Fabbio's immersive visual art and Wilson's adept writing - in addition to DeCandido's and Siuda's beautiful scripting, lettering, and design.

In this Kickstarter, we are offering electronic and print SUPPORT TO INDIE PUBLISHING reward levels in which you will receive our 2018 and 2019 anthologies. Both are multi-genre collections of short stories and flash fiction. As Told by Things is a lighthearted collection of stories told from the perspective of inanimate objects. Five Minutes at Hotel Stormcove is a unabashedly eclectic collection of stories that each take place in the course of five minutes at the legendary Hotel Stormcove. We are especially proud of the way this collection showcases the diverse voices and perspectives of the global writing community. Thanks for your support to indie publishing!

We have the greatest respect for our backers and their support to unique, indie art. While your early support is critical to our ability to complete this project, we believe in keeping our Kickstarter pricing at the same price that the books will retail. Additionally, all print copies come with a digital license included - so you can read your digital copy - either to keep your print copy pristine or just to have options on the road. If you appreciate these philosophies and want to pledge higher than the minimum for a level, know that this financial support is highly appreciated and will help us toward our goal of making sure all creators on this project are paid well for their work.

In 2016, Icarus asked a fundamental question: What is our purpose, and what will we do to discover it? In 2019, Jellinek will provide the answer. Join us in that journey by looking at the pledge levels, supporting the project, and spreading the word. And thank you. Together, we will draw from Icarus’s past—and learn about his future.

Risks and challenges

Atthis Arts has delivered on all of our many successful Kickstarter campaigns. Much of the artwork for this project is already completed, and lettering and layout has already begun. The biggest risks are the completion of the artwork and any unforeseen personal events that would delay completion of the finished art, the lettering, or final layout of the novels.
