Learning Replicants! in 2 minutes Video
Some may look at our funding goal and think something is wrong and that we don't understand how this works. We would like to reassure you that this goal is intentional. We are running this kickstarter for 2 primary reasons: 1) Presales to a community who loves gaming and supporting independent creators, and 2) the collaborative process. You will note, 2 types of collaborator perks in this campaign; the Inventor and Hive Mind perks. Besides creating games, what we love most about what we do, is collaborating with people who are excited about what we do, and setting a goal we can trip over allows people who want to get in on collaborator goals to do so. As of now we can afford to launch the project on our own, but it is so much more fun to be part of a community.
Attention Span Games always strives to release quality games written, designed and produced by independent game lovers. Replicants! is no different. This will be the first game released by ASG that was fully designed by one of the owners of ASG, with story elements by Ron Leota, the lead writer of all of the RPGs we have produced, and art by Joey Valdillez, an up and coming artist from Seattle.
We are planning to use the success of this campaign to help bring more game projects to fruition and help grow our independent gaming community. Replicants! is a creation we believe is worthy of this goal. All of our art is going to be hand drawn, and then touched up digitally. There will be almost 200 cards all printed 2.75" Square on 280gsm Blue Core card stock.
3 double sided instruction cards
60 unique replicants
16 backed resource cards (4 of each of the 4 resources, that make up the Resource Deck)
You may have noticed that all the replicants use the same art currently and that our Drones are just numbers. That is because we at Attention Span Games are huge fans of the collaborative process and love to implement ideas of those excited by the things we are making. As such, we have made 2 perks that allow those who believe in our project to get creatively involved. These are flavor perks only, as we want to keep the balance of the game intact. The 2 perks are as follows:
Inventor's Package: The backer gets to name a Replicant, get credited for it and submit the art request to our amazing artist. The name can be anything that is not offensive. Keep it relatively family friendly Ex: "Killbot 5000" or "The Fixinator". The Credit may be a name or an organization of yours, or fictional. Ex: Killbot 5000 by "Carson Corp", "Will Carson", or "Murder Inc". The art request can be as simple or detailed as you wish (please limit to half a page) Ex:" Made entirely of knives and floating through space", or "It's body is a tire, and there are different weapons pointing off of it with a camera in the center that acts as it's one beady eye, and it is in the middle of a desert". The Name and Credit will be on that Replicant card at the top of the Level 1 side, and the picture drawn from your request will be the background of that specific Replicant card. When you receive your copy of the game, you will also receive a signed copy of the original hand drawn artwork.
Inventor's Lite Package: is exactly the same as the above inventors package, except it doesn't come with the signed original of the art.
Hive Mind's Package: The backer gets to name one of the 6 playable Hive Minds, describe the theme of that hive's drones, and give the inspiration/goals of that hive. Our writer will use the description to write up a short story (approximately 500 words), which will be told across the backs of the 4 drone cards for that player. At the end of the story you will be credited on the card. The Hive Name will be listed at the beginning of the story, and can be anything so long as it remains relatively family friendly. Drone Art Theme: This can be anything from "These are drones of war", to something more complex like "The drones of this hive all have exposed wires, spark a lot and look as though they would barely function, but somehow they get the job done." Hive Inspiration/Goals: This can be anything about the hive you want to make sure the Writer incorporates. Things like "They are somehow clutzy, and while they mean well everything they interact with seems to end up exploding." Credit: These stories will all be salvaged data that a hive grew around and while the person (or corporation) that created the original data did not make the Hive, it inspired the hive to grow in the direction it has. All stories will end with "...- the name of the person or corp". Which the backer may use their own or a fictional name. When you receive your copy of the game, you will also receive a signed copy of an original hand drawn Drone artwork.
$10,000: Individual Drone art for all 4 drones for each of the 6 Hives (currently going to be each hive has their own individual drone but the 4 drones that look the same) $20,000: 16, Backer Exclusive Replicants.
I was one of the early independent playtesters of this game, and I just wanted to say how great it is! Replicants is one of those games that makes your head hurt a little, as you're trying to work out how to get what you need out of the resource system, or at least how to stop your opponents getting what they need. It seems so simple at first, until you really start having to think about how to get the most out of your turns. It's easy to learn, but fiendishly difficult to play right! I play a lot of games, and few manage to be so deep, with this little complexity. That's why I jumped at the chance to buy myself a copy. ~ Richard Hensman, Kickstarter Superbacker
Replicants! Is a game for both the experienced and inexperienced alike in that you can learn it within a sitting and enjoy playing and the company around you. There is room for being strategic with the simple rules and the cards are easy to follow it is simple to spread this on a table after dinner and play. As intimidating as the initial spread may look it becomes more helpful especially when thinking ahead as you continue to play. Futuristic games can be over-run with new terminology and a lot of new concepts to follow, Replicants! has its complexities but this is not one of them. I really enjoyed playing and as soon as I get mine look forward to playing with my friends and family after pizza. Making them guess which card I designed will be an added bonus. ~ Teyan, Girl we met at a Comicon
I have played Replicants! many times, with several different group sizes. I really enjoy the simple, easy play of a game that is different every time you play. You can make groups of Replicants that give you more resources, or mess around with the game board every turn. This game is easy to learn, and good for a quick pick up game with a couple friends, or a larger group on your games night or other get-together. ~ Trisha Durdy, Lead Playtester
Risks and challenges
The game is fully developed, less the Replicant and Drone artwork (which will either be filled by backer's art requests or if they don't sell out, our artist will be finishing them with his own ideas.
We already have the funds to produce the game, which is why we have set such an unreasonably low goal for funding. So even if we dont raise enough to pay for everything here, the game will still go into production when we finish.
The only real snag we see as a possibility is if there are delays from our manufacturer. But we have put in extra time in our estimates to give us a buffer on that front.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
