Our profound thanks to the more than 300 backers who helped us raise meet and exceed our goal. Thanks to you, we'll be able to bring more filmmakers to the festival in the Spring of 2014 to share the experience with you.
If you missed the funding deadline and want to secure your Pass to the festival, head over to this page. Just want to support the festival? This page can help you do that.
We believe that strengthening the connection between an artist and an audience through direct interaction is one of the most important things a film festival can do. Filmmakers create the connections by making movies, but when we bring those filmmakers to theaters to meet moviegoers in person, magic happens. Become a backer of this project and you'll be responsible for some of that magic. With some of the great rewards we've cooked up, you'll get to experience it too. (Even if you don't live in Atlanta.)
If you're not familiar with the Atlanta Film Festival, it is the city's premier film event – 10 days in the Spring that showcase 200+ films and the people who make them. In addition to feature and short film screenings, the Festival includes parties, a 5-day Creative Conference, the highly popular Sound & Vision night of music and film, red carpet events, a screenplay competition, and more. At 38 years old, the Atlanta Film Festival is one of the longest-running and most prestigious film festivals in the world. The 2014 festival runs from March 28 - April 6.
In days gone by, the festival was lucky enough to have the support of generous sponsors who donated flights and hotel rooms (or the money to buy them) so that we could bring filmmakers, actors, distributors, and other members of the industry to Atlanta to participate. While we still have the backing of some heroic organizations and individuals, support for travel has declined in the current economic climate. Because filmmaker participation is such an essential part of the festival experience, we want to make certain that this part of the budget returns to its former strength and continues to grow.
A crowdfunding campaign like this one can help provide that budget while also creating a touchpoint between the festival and its fans. All funds collected as part of this campaign will be used to bring filmmakers & industry to Atlanta and show them the Southern hospitality of the city while they're here.
The experience of meeting an audience is powerful for a filmmaker, but it's just as important to the audience. If you're a movie lover, the opportunity to meet the people who make your new favorite films is one of the defining features of a film festival. Have you ever watched a movie and wished you could ask the filmmaker what they were thinking during a certain scene? Has a film ever made you so happy you wanted to shake the director's hand? That's what a film festival is all about.
If you're also a filmmaker, a festival is one of your few opportunities to meet and connect with others in the industry from outside the city. The funds we raise will mostly go towards bringing more filmmakers to the festival. A smaller portion will be used to bring in key members of the industry to participate in the ATLFF Creative Conference and the festival as a whole, to help Atlanta filmmakers make new connections and build their careers.
Like every Kickstarter project, if we don't raise the entirety of our $13,000 goal we won't get a penny. This "all or nothing" aspect of Kickstarter ensures that we set a realistic dollar amount for our goal, and that we will work hard to convince backers that it's a goal worth supporting. Please give as generously as you can and help us spread the word. Your card will not be charged unless we reach our goal.
You don't have to live in Atlanta to be a part of the festival! The Backers Jury will include everyone who contributes $25 or more and wants to participate.
This group of people will have the opportunity to watch about 8-10 of the short films selected for the festival before the festival begins. The jury will then vote to pick a winner. Watching and voting will take place online, so you can participate from anywhere you have an internet connection. You can even watch in your pajamas -- we can't see you.
Once a winner is picked, we'll fly one of the creators of that film in for the festival and present them with a special "Filmmaker to Watch" award. We will also ask them to attend the Backers Mixer. See updates about the Backers Jury during the campaign for more details.
- Every penny collected during this campaign will be used to bring filmmakers & other members of the film industry to Atlanta and to show them a good time while they're here.
- This year we will return to the newly-renovated, historic Plaza Theatre as our main venue. We're exploring the use of other screening venues in the area, and we want to keep the festival as "walkable" as possible in Poncey-Highlands and the surrounding neighborhoods.
- This year we received more film submissions than ever before (3000+ and counting) -- that means a bigger pool of choices for an even better festival.
- The Atlanta Film Festival is an Academy Awards qualifying festival. The winners of our animated and narrative shorts jury awards may qualify to be on a short list for Oscar nomination.
- We will announce our first wave of programmed films during the course of this Kickstarter campaign.
- MovieHopper Cards and festival Passes all provide all-you-can-watch access to the regular films at the festival. See the festival web site for more information on the exact level of access provided by each.
- MovieHopper Cards and Passes also come with a membership to the Atlanta Film Festival, which means you'll get invitations to free advance screenings and other fun film events all year round.
Thank you for your ongoing support, and don't forget to spread the word.

Risks and challenges
This is a pretty straightforward project -- if we raise the funds, we'll offer to bring in and accommodate people who we wouldn't have been able to bring to Atlanta otherwise. There's always the chance that someone we invite (like our Backers Award winner) won't be able to attend, which would be disappointing, but where possible we'll simply bring in someone else from that film or another film.
Where we have backer levels that involve physical rewards, there is the chance that they might not be delivered exactly when we intend based on external circumstances -- maybe the turkeys escape before they can be smoked, or the popcorn machine at the Plaza breaks on the day of the festival. In those cases, we'll make good on the deal as soon as we can, or come up with a suitable alternative.
All Passes and MovieHopper Cards purchased as part of a reward level may be picked up beginning March 28 at the Atlanta Film Festival.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
